Hi - can I ask what your long term plans are (if any), some of us over on FaceBook have been debating the benefits of going self-hosted. This is a really good piece of work but (if my experience of wordpress is relevant) I found that longer term it was much cheaper and more flexible to go self-hosted. It does mean taking longer to get something started. It would mean no adverts!

I don't know anything about hosting a website but I do hope more of the Facebook group joins over here so we aren't divided. I think this is fine for the meantime until we think of an even better long term solution.

Not sure how intrusive adverts are going to be

It seems easy enough to make payments to stop the adverts, but, what Im not clear about is how expensive that would make a forum that is even say 33% as busy as the BF forums were, I suspect really quite very expensive and that hosting will turn out to be the far cheaper solution, but does mean that someone has to take on a financial commitment upfront.
It's a pity BF couldn't have handled this so much better, they could have given us warning and even offered to say pay £500 in hosting costs as a golden goodbye to us... grrr, actually don't let me get started, I am so angry at how BF handled this.

I am sure people would be willing to donate. I know I would.
But I also don't know the costs.

Hosting is relatively cheap (I have some that handles several blogs) and software is free. The cost is time - I am playing with some forum packages but won't have anything ready for public consumption until next week.
A DNS name (ie a proper web address) costs £10 - £15 per year, some decent hosting might cost £40 - £100 per year, the odd plug0-in might be £25. These are just estimates.
When I blogged on Wordpress.com I found to get them to add relatively minor things soon added up and I went self-hosted. That's how they make their money.

Id be willing to help delete spam (I don't want to moderate forum debates) as long as there are a good amount of other people helping. I moderated a forum for a brief time with one other girl and the spam was too much for just the two of us.
What you need is a good number of people who can help from different time zones. I think we at least have a good amount of people from the US, UK, Europe, and Australia in this fandom (well from the old boards) so right there you are covering numerous time zones. That way no one has to wake up in the middle of the night to delete spam.

It looks like it is possible for "Guests" to post without registering. Is that correct; and is it OK? If the official forum was hit by spam, opening the door to spambots isn't an awfully appealing prospect.
