Hey guys.
Just a thread to talk about the infamous forum Gallifrey Base. What are your experiences of it? What do you think of it? I personally feel it's nowhere as good as this forum and is full of the worst kinds of fans...

Yeah, I gave up on it as it felt like nobody could post an opinion without being jumped on by loads of other people.

Well I don't like Moffat's Who either, but saying he deserves some hate, and ordinary GB of all places, was probably just asking for trouble. The irony is of course that anyone trying to praise Moffat also gets savaged. It's really sad, some people trying to be positive just getting drowned out.

I know, it's double-sided and the administrators are just bias.

I joined it for a while after BF closed down, knowing of it's reputation, and honestly didn't find it that bad. But then maybe I just have low standards. Or I built it up so much i my head, that when it turned out some members were just snarky and insular, it didn't seem so bad.

It was a long time ago but I found Gallifrey Base a horrible place: the BF forums were a much more civilised environment. Now the BF forums are gone, this is home. I couldn't care less if I never visited GB again... and certainly have no plans to do so.

The threads where people marathon and review things like the New Adventures can be very interesting. One user is doing a Main Range review thread.

Some of the most knowledgeable people going with a wide and deep appreciation of Doctor Who and all manner of other issues. Sadly there are about 100 times as many fruitcakes who ruin it and, as others have said, are jut incredibly rude. And, sorry budnp2013, but if you say anyone just doing their job "deserves hate", as you've said above, then you deserved the ban. No-one just trying their best "deserves hate".
Galifrey Base is nowhere near as bad as the RTD era though where the-then Outpost Gallifrey was flooded with homophobia every time a new-Who ep aired. Some of the worst hate-speech I've seen online was in those years.

I did not find Gallifrey Base as rough a town as reputed, but I think it depends on the neighborhoods you hang out in. When I was active there, I stayed out of the political threads and anything related to New Who and never got into any dust-ups more serious then being told a bit unkindly that some of my Troughton and Pertwee faves were perhaps less worthy than I esteemed them. On the other hand, I never found much of a sense of community there. Bit sterile, but maybe that's what I get for staying out of the hot spots.
When I first found other people talking about Doctor Who online back in the late '90s, rec.arts.drwho was where everyone went (as far as I knew). Now that place made the darkest alleys of Gallifrey Base look like Sesame Street. Boy, you needed rhinoceros hide to throw up an opinion back there. No one was in charge, and the vilest calumnies flew back and forth. Hate speech, physical and legal threats, WAY too much information on people's personal lives, trolling as a way of life. Good grief, I just wanted to chat about 'The War Games'!
I like the DU much, much better.

I joined in the wildness months, but too be honest unless it was about the current TV episode or Moffat & RTD bashing not many had much to say about other Dr Who stuff.
after a couple of weeks I gave up looking.
I didn't find it unpleasant just dull, and why do posters still think it's ok to post aggressive, nasty stuff on there, it's not about what opinion you have that most take umbrage with but how it is said. I saw some very unpleasant stuff about Gemma Coleman and when challenged, were very defensive of their disgusting posts.
this is a much warmer friendlier place, and thankfully the spelling & grammar police keep quiet on here too, I know often stuff I write has spelling mistakes & grammar problems (the joys of dyslexia, predictive text & getting old!) but thankfully no one has to point it out and make me feel bad. in that respect this Is a nicer place for me than the old BF forum.

The Divergent Universe forum (happily growing with new members) is home base for my purposes. But, I do quite enjoy my occasional visits on the Gallifrey Base.
The strength of the Gallifrey Base (and the old Big Finish forum) is its *volume* of contributing members often providing a wider field of discussion. I suppose the larger amount of comments do sometimes give way to the increased possibility of being engaged by an edgier member and the likelihood of witnessing incompatible viewpoints. Despite that, the Gallifrey Base seems to me to be regularly "policed" by Steve and his moderators.

I wouldn't join GB if you paid me, the younger me would've kicked off big time on there, but i want a calmer life now without drama & be able to post my thoughts & opinions without being trolled i had enough of that when i reviewed on Amazon.
I browsed it out of sheer curiosity & didn't like the atmosphere of the place which is a keyboard warriors wet dream.
This forum is lovely, even when we disagree we are still respectful of others & i class this place as my DW family.

RADW was a tough place to hang out, but it taught me a lot about Doctor Who online communities! I wonder if 'The Doctor' is still around? He was some character...

RADW was a tough place to hang out, but it taught me a lot about Doctor Who online communities! I wonder if 'The Doctor' is still around? He was some character... You know, I want to say I did see that guy on Gallifrey Base, would've been 2 or 3 years ago. Going by a different name, because I think there's another 'The Doctor' there, I just remember that moment, 'Ah, so that's what happened to...' Getting off topic, but I remember exactly where I was when I first came across r.a.d.w (the computer lab in grad school, on a moment's downtime from my TA duties) and the astounding revelation hit me that I could just go there anytime and find people talking about Doctor Who. I didn't even have any friends who liked it, so the only way to even follow a conversation about the show was in DWM or fanzine letters pages. Now here were all the topics I could imagine in a constant froth of opinions flying back and forth and I could just join in. Like you said, though, it could be a tough crowd. For better or worse, I'm a sensitive soul and don't like to argue (debate is different), so I picked and chose where to dip a toe in. Some threads, though - just got so beyond control I couldn't turn away from at least lurking, and then I'd want to punch myself in the face for taking the time to read through all that sleaze.

I post there occasionally (under a different username) and I can't say I've ever any problems, yes certain users are very strongly opinionated, vitriolic or downright rude about certain sujects/episodes/characters etc, but that's to be expected on any message board of that scale and popularity, admittedly I'm more of lurker than active poster and I tend to only post on threads that actually interest me, which might explain why I'm managed to avoid any real evidence of its infamous reputation...
I will say, if you do join, never start a debate about RTD vs Moffat...
It's a great resource for reviews/spoilers/leaks/interviews, several high profile writers from the worlds of Who are regular contributors.

RADW was so lawless there ended up beng a rec.arts.drwho.moderated spin-off newsgroup... but that was nowhere near as fun. You're right though Jason, DU is much better!

It's a little more rough and tumble. There are a lot more people, and plenty of trouble-makers. I don't mind posting on it when the season is actually on.

I joined after BF closed it's forum, looked around a little and was overwhelmed. I never posted. I haven't been back since the DU started.
