Twilight Zone '85: Season 3, Episodes 10-11 - Oh, hey, it's Windom Earle. The Simpsons: "The Punching Bag" - The shorts use the rumpus room much more often than the series proper. I haven't really been counting, but this marks the first time I noticed Homer saying "D'oh!" Star Trek TNG: "Where Silence Has Lease" - A good but overlooked combination of two Trek favorites - the Godlike Being Screwing With Us episode, and the Space Anomaly episode. There are some very memorable scenes like the recursive bridge, leading to Worf's hilarious outburst, "ONE RIKER! ONE BRIDGE!" I have seen a face not unlike Nagilim's during some psychedelic escapades. I don't really know what that means, if it means anything at all.

Star Trek TNG: Season 2, Episodes 3-4 - What an odd pairing this is. We go from Data at his best, matching wits with Moriarty, to Data at his worst, matching wits with...Joe Piscopo. Shoot me. Twilight Zone '85: Season 3, Episodes 12-13 - Tonight's dose of "Oh, It's Him!" was Michael Moriarty, also known as the complete jerk of a protagonist in Q - The Winged Serpent.

The Simpsons: "Simpsons Christmas" - Yes, the shorts have a Christmas special which predates the famous "Simpsons Roasting." Some nice writing in this Night Before Christmas spoof, such as rhyming "Bartholomew" with "all of you."
Blackadder: "Blackadder's Christmas Carol" - Another fortuitously timed Christmas episode. This is a lot of fun with the reverse Scrooge setup, and the revisiting of Blackadders II and III. Anything with Queenie gets an automatic bonus point in my book.
Twilight Zone '85: "The Trunk" - I guess the moral of the story is that people who are only friends with you for your money aren't real friends...except the protagonist never really seemed to think otherwise. Another ho-hum outing.

I saw the 2018 mini series adaptation of The City and the City With David Morrissey Makes me wish we had him as the doctor and it is a darn shame that Big Finish hasn’t asked him to do any audios for them

Only Fools and Horses: "Dates" - What a depressing ending. Rodney's thrilling car chase just reminded me of the Top Gear episode where that three wheeler ended up on its side every single corner... Twilight Zone '85: "Appointment on Route 17" - You're sitting down to watch a show. A show not only of sight and sound but of disappointment. A journey into a wondrous land whose boundaries are that of imagination and the writers who have none. Next stop . . . the 80s Twilight Zone!

Taskmaster. Everyone's so good on this. I felt bad for Johnny on the Building Task, but I guess Greg's gotta be cruel.

Alien World's episode 1 on Netflix. Really disappointing show. My 17 year old son is a fan. He watches a show on Youtube called Alien Biospheres and loves it. It's probably his favorite thing. He's an artist and posted some of his alien inspired art on that show's site and has now been hired by the creator to provide some art content for his Kickstarter page. He had me watch the first episode of the Netflix show. I thought it was just ok. Was bored by parts, but he's loving it. (As a tangent, he hopes to be rocking it in art school next year. All my fingers are crossed.)

Twilight Zone '85: Season 3, Episodes 16-17 - Over halfway at last. "The Cold Equations" was rather excellent for once. It's hard SF with a difficult choice. If only the rest of the show was this good.
Only Fools and Horses: "Yuppy Love" - At last, the world-famous "Del falls through the bar" episode. Maybe it's a cultural divide or something, but I cannot fathom why the British public finds this moment in particular so hilarious. It's amusing, yes, but not even close to the chandelier incident. Ah, well.
Star Trek TNG: "Loud as a Whisper" - Not bad, but boring. The TV equivalent of beige, like so much of early TNG. A deaf diplomat could have been an interesting character, but instead we get some ridiculous rigmarole about needing three different interpreters to be effective, and the utter refusal or inability to use text-to-speech or any other form of communication when they are...no longer available.
Jeez, I'm being a negative nelly tonight.

Caught a series 2 episode of Hazell last night. George Tovey (Ernie Clements in Pyramids of Mars & father of Roberta) carries his luggage to his Hotel Suite. Ian Marter (Harry Sullivan) pops up to see Hazell for a chat, Hazell then pops out into the foyer and encounters Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca) in a rare out of costume speaking role. And of course Nicholas Ball (Hazell) did a memorable guest turn in Red Dwarf IV - Justice, as the Simulant. There must have been a Sci-Fi Signing event going on in the conference facility downstairs..... Anyhow, came across this review of Episode 1 of Only Fools & Horses (Big Brother) yesterday. Oh dear. www.mylondon.news/lifestyle/lifestyle-opinion/i-watched-only-fools-horses-19429327

Another busybody clutching their pearls. Not a person worth listening to. What gets me is how these people land such easy jobs. In London too. As a 'Reporter'. Metropolitan Media is full of well connected types landing cushy numbers requiring little experience, nous or skill. That's the politics of envy I am guilty of, apparently though.....

Another busybody clutching their pearls. Not a person worth listening to. None of the accusations about racism made about the episode are incorrect though. & the show wasn't an overnight success. Though not sure why this particular article has been written, seems a bit random.

This person admitted she lasted all of 30 seconds, ignores the context of who the characters are, ignores the context of the times, and headed straight for her fainting couch and from there to the word processor. Anyway, why do these people find employment, and why are these articles written? The answer is that clickbait makes the world go round. Coming up with a spurious attack on a beloved cultural icon is a great way to stir up controversy and therefore attention. That's the job.

I agree it seems really weird to write an article about this first episode now, but lets be honest no one knew the context of who the characters were at the time because it was the first time we had seen it, & the context of the times argument, sorry but that doesn't excuse the content. You have made quick reviews of the show here, the only difference is that she is doing it on a website rather than on a forum. Hopefully we can critique your opinions on telly shows in the same manner. But her article has obviously worked, it has generated a few responses here!

You have made quick reviews of the show here, the only difference is that she is doing it on a website rather than on a forum. Hopefully we can critique your opinions on telly shows in the same manner. But her article has obviously worked, it has generated a few responses here! The context of the times does excuse the content. Any historian worth his salt knows that you do not judge the past by the standards of today, because social mores are a continually shifting goalpost as culture changes. You can't hold pop culture accountable for reflecting what was normal at the time. We may not be historians, but anyone who enjoys media of the past needs to understand this concept, especially if they are writing about it professionally. As for the context of the characters, no, you don't know it to begin with. But if one finds out, say, by watching the entire episode instead of pitching a fit about Sidney Poitier, they will find out that it suits the story perfectly. The point of the joke is not, "Haha Sidney Poitier's name is difficult to pronounce." Even if it were, that's got nothing to do with black people since the name is of French origin, and the language is continually mispronounced throughout the show. No, the point of the joke is to establish that Grandad is absentminded, that Rodney is more intelligent than his fellow Trotters, and that Del is crass and ignorant despite his aspirations of refinement. Those traits follow through the whole show. They form the basis of their family dynamic and of Del's continually inept attempts to gain wealth and status. Yes, there are off-colour remarks here and there, but if any further proof is needed that we are usually laughing at the Trotters and not with them, "Cash and Curry" later in the first series has two Indian gents swindle Del by using his own ignorance against him, and it serves him right. Of course you can feel free to critique my own critiques as much as you like. I just think some critiques are valid, and some are not - such as basing a deliberately inflammatory article around a brief snippet without knowing the full context. But yes, job done for her, I suppose, because here we are talking about it.
