Finished it and WOW! That was amazing! There were some real real shocking, "did that just happen? moments for me, and each story was as good as the next. I was really upset that work got in the way of my listening. The only disappointment was one that I should have expected. I've been looking forward to Eight meeting The Monk ever since To The Death. That story still leaves a lump in my throat and I got emotional as soon as the Monk and The Doctor came face to face. Now, I completely understand why they didn't side track the flow of the story with the emotional baggage that comes with that meeting, but in my heart I wanted more. I'm not sure what, to be honest, but something more. For Lucie, and Alex, and Tamsin. Even if those names weren't mentioned, I felt like he could have been meeting any Timelord that he didn't happen to like. Until, well, the end of that story. But in the end it was all so subdued. But the set, as a whole, was outstanding. And I also loved the callback to the Red Lady. Just a masterful set of stories. This, though the cliffhanger ending left a somewhat sour taste in my mouth...it kinda feels like we will be getting Doom Coalition 4.5 next rather than a run of new stories, and as good an actress as Hattie Morahan is, I'm not 100% sure of her character or motivations yet, she was very much the third wheel in the partership and has limited time to develop on her own, it's obviously too early to judge but part of me thinks the ending would be more effective if it were 8 and Helen going after Liv...

The thing is I don't think Liv really came into her own until Doom Coalition being slightly overshadowed by Molly in Dark Eyes even though towards the end of Dark Eyes Liv was arguably 8's main companion as Molly wasn't really around.
I think Helen isn't sure of her place yet on the TARDIS either but I think that's fine. I think that will be part of Helen's story arc. I am definitely happy we are getting more stories with Liv & Helen I love them both and I also think Helen & Liv at least have a lot of chemistry and I love the friendship that has developed between them. As for Helen's place on the TARDIS give it time to develop. And perhaps she never will feel like she fully belongs but from a character standpoint think that would be fine too. Overall she is still around so what her chatacter's story will be and how she will connect to the Doctor & Liv in the future we still don't know.

Someone raised the point on GB that the writers were hinting at Helen possibly being a lesbian (and as yet unaware of of her feelings), I hadn't picked up on it at first and I might have been reading to much into things, but some of her interaction with River and Liv across the boxsets did make me think there was more to Helen's personality than she herself knew at that point.

I have pondered the idea of Helen being a lesbian - I enjoyed her chemistry with both Liv and River, so I wondered whether BF would ever go down that route. It'd be nice if they did, since it would add a new dimension to her character. I especially like the River and Helen interactions, so if that was ever a possibility... I'm pretty sure River's mentioned to have had a wife in one episode? So it's not like it'd be completely out of character for something to develop there.
If/when Helen leaves Eight (and assuming she makes it out alive...), it'd be nice if she joined River for her travels.

Why can't women have deep, meaningful relationships with other women and NOT be lesbians anymore?

Although it's true that Helen and River have similar interests.

Well I have finally listened to this release, so I can now go back through this thread and read what others have thought about it.
For me my first thought was I think I need to listen to all of that again to get the full benefit from it, but that is no bad thing.
And speaking of bad things brings me to my second thought...The Eleven just keeps getting better. His escape in the last episode was... monstrously marvellous. I am glad that we will be hearing more from him and hopefully his earlier incarnations.

I decided last night to hold off listening to DC4 and go back and listen to the whole thing from the first set. I should have done this sooner. I'm demonstrating a lot of self control. It also means that I'll be doing almost nothing but listening to DC for the next 16 hours. I'm following a different course. I listened to the whole of DC4 right away (a course I almost - but not quite - started to regret, as it took me a few moments to remember some details of the previous stories and where DC3 had left off). I'm in the middle of re-listening to DC4. When I'm done, my plan is to go back and listen to the whole thing from the beginning. Fantastic stories!

I had not realized or remembered the monk was in this. A lovely surprise for my ears. My ears were confused and thought this was a third Big Finish monk (and said so at a panel this weekend and was quickly corrected). Possibly I was also thinking that Rufus Hound monk was set before Graeme Garden monk and since this was obviously after To the Death, it had to be someone different.

I listened to the series starting Thursday and then each day driving to and back from ReGeneration Who 3. It was great. On Sunday, I had to tell Nick Briggs that when I was listening to the third one with the earlier Ollistra (note, I had not read the cast list at this time), I was feeling a sense of dread throughout. It was somewhat satisfying to hear the new regenerated Ollistra right at the end there.
The 11's escape from Tessno was just brutal. I was really rooting for her to just shoot him anyway, even all tied up. Of course, if she had done that, he might have regenerated into The 12 and the energy from that might have freed him.
I haven't finished the behind the scenes yet - looking forward to those.

Just finished my re-listen. That ending is very dramatic and love the way it ends. That was unexpected and it ties it all together.

Brilliant box set, good performances from Paul McGann, Nicola Walker & Hattie Morahan, a nice cameo, Weeping Angels, Rufus Hounds brilliant take on The Monk, but for me Mark Bonnar as the Eleven smashed it & gave one of the best performances I've heard in a audio drama.
The Eleven is a fantastic original villain that Big Finish have come up with, Bonnar gave a phenomenal performance making the character & his personality disorder terrifying without hamming it up.
Mr Dorney, Mr Fitton thank you for delivering a fitting conclusion to a 16 part epic.
This gets a superb 9/10

Have BF mentioned at all why they didn't use the Garden incarnation? Well it isn't at all obvious to me that this was set after To The Death for the Monk. Yes the Monk knew he'd done something to really upset the Doctor, bit it was all kept deliberately obscire as to whether he knew what. And I don't think Graeme Garden is working anymore. He is quite elderly now.

Re-listening to the whole set. It's really interesting how one's viewpoint changes when re-listening. You really start to see much better how everything ties together.

Same here.
I thought that the first two box sets were... Alright? But after the release of the third set and relistening to the whole series in the couple of days leading up to the release of the finale, I actually rather grew fond of it!

So, in Absent Friends, have we ever conjectured about who's on the phone when the Doctor picks up, at the end?

So, in Absent Friends, have we ever conjectured about who's on the phone when the Doctor picks up, at the end? Yes, but in the Volume 3 thread My post on it when people were debating it: "It doesn't matter who is on the phone. Adric, Lucie, Alex....the sense of loss and regret would be there regardless. Leaving who called ambiguous lets everyone have their own interpretation rather than be definitive about who "should" be calling. It wouldn't be anywhere near as effective if it was all tied up in a bow."
