Just because you haven't personally heard of someone doesnt mean their name wouldn't sell the product to others, just saying. As I have certainly told some friends about this release based on him appearing in it. A friend of mine in the U.K. knows him from seeing him on stage too.Not saying he demands a premium but the release also shouldn't be reduced because he is an unknown. And also you said Sigmund Freud was full cast but so is this. There are 6 actors. I mean at least we can both agree it's not expensive. All this talk of actors being well known or not reminds me of my mum....it's a bit off topic but I thought I would share.....many of these names will probally not be known to our US friends but still.... my mum went to a friend of hers mayday party, when she came back she told me she had been talking to a lovely young man for much of the evening and thought he was a doctor! later in the year we sat down to watch the launch show for strictly come dancing.....and when Tom chambers came on she shouted that's him, that's him the lad I talked to at the party, why have they got doctors on here now.....Tom chambers played a doctor in casualty! mum went to a dinner held by our local MP who she knows quite well (Margaret Beckett.....deputy labour leader at the time) and sat next to a man who she chatted too, she came home and said nice man but a bit boring kept talking about all these people she had never heard of and his show.....that was Melvyn Bragg, Lord Bragg as he is now! we we went to see the touring production of beauty and the beast, parked in the car park and she went to check that it did not close before the performance finished, there was a man chatting to the car park attendant & he assured her that it would be finished in time. She then went on to say how marvellous the show was in London and how the tours were not as good as they used 2nd actors & musicians! when the show started she whispered to me....That man there playing lumiere he was the one I talked to in the car park! oh mum she has done it all her life, she has been talking & introduced to many well known people over the years Barry gibb, Brian Connelly of the sweet, Peter Andre & other all without a clue who they were until well after the event. Love that she is so untainted by Fame šš

I cannot find a reason for my previous non enjoyment of this show.I bought it knowing it would be my type of audio drama but despite time and uninterrupted listening i left it feeling empty.
There were a few personal things going on in my life when i listened to it on a trip to the Scottish Islands and i needed some mental escape.I think when trouble hits me space ,battles ,monsters and the complex issues of time travel are better at distracting me.
But today am listening and very much enjoying this series(given that am listening in the Mediterranean)this is good drama.
The previous issues had passed and good audio drama should transport you Wether you are in Glasgow or Siberia to the country, planet where it is set i think, not that you have to travel to the Med to truly enjoy.(but its defintely enhancing it)
I would never become a professional Critic imagine giving a review and then two weeks later finding you love it after all....especially when sales are an issue.
Three episodes in an am in Rome and am loving it.

Something to look forward to. Now am getting to finally appreciate historical CICERO am not sure i want to dilute it with Doctor Who Cicero as if i buy the next series it may interfere with it. I had the same problem with Dorian cross overs but hey i have it with crossovers in general.I create one universe in my mind and somehow through my own mental prejudices i hate it diluted/polluted.

How many famous creative people died thinking their works were failures - Emily Bronte, Van Gogh, to name two. In Who terms the much maligned Season Eighteen was deemed a breath of fresh air when it aired back in 1980. And I have a sneaking feeling both Moffatt's era and the last series may have the last laugh in the end. As for changing your mind, I do it all the time!

Yes time, mood disposition weather hahah have altered my mind a few times. So i have changed my mind about this series so far nearing the final episode and i cant remember it how it ends. Like most of the Big Finish originals i feel they have to commit to two series at least so we know there is more.I jumped on board for a few now but leaving things hanging as to wether there is a second season of them doesnt help with purchasing. Its like your fave TV shows getting cancelled and left hanging on a cliffhanger very disrespectful of the viewing public and to BF purchasers. Would i buy a second series of Cicero yes i would-even if itās NOT on CD š

I'm listening to Cicero episodes IV to VI this weekend. I must have been interrupted by life events partway through my listen to the series, because episode IV was both powerful and unfamiliar. I would have remembered hearing that story if I'd listened to it before. So it seems I must not have listened to the complete series before, back when it was released, which means I get a bonus of a weekend.
Any word on a date for the second series? I feel as though the release of Tartarus and Torchwood: Soho presage some announcement on that front. But I also appreciate that a six episode set all by a single writer might require time to produce.

This is the first Big Finish original series Iāve listened to in its entirety and I was quite impressed.
The depiction of the Roman world doesnāt shy away from the nastier elements and the characterisation of Cicero and Quintus was interesting and layered. I enjoyed this a lot, aside from some elements of Episode VI.
I hope this gets a follow-up, though that seems unlikely given how long itās been since it was released. Guess Iāll settle for adding Tartarus to the wish-list.

Hardly conclusive or a promise in any concrete way, but an interesting thing made its way into the mailbag section of this month's Vortex:
I loved the initial Cicero box set and I was very happy to see him pop up opposite the Fifth Doctor and co last year. Are there plans for any follow up stories or sets? Ben Moore
Nick: Iād never rule that out, Ben, and Iām sure its producer, Scott Handcock, will make sure we havenāt heard the end of Cicero.

Cicero 1 was all based on events in his life, and i have a feeling the story will continue at some point in the future!!

Ha, bit cheeky to make it sound like the ball's in my court! As ever, it's up to the powers that be to commission the content they want, and so seeing this comment was news to me as no interest in more has been expressed, hence the Cicero/Who crossover (because I just thought it would be fun!)
On the plus side, we're still the only BF Original to be nominated for an Audie Award, so maybe that will count for something...?

I just found it an interesting Q&A to make its way into the monthly magazine. A little glimmer of hope for my favourite of the Originals

Oh, I know nobody's implying! I'm just amused that it's something mentioned in Vortex as if I have control over commissioning when, being freelance, that isn't the case at all.

Yes i thought that would be the case. once again Nick Briggs gives a vague comment that's open to interpretation in PR material and names a third party as knowing about it when they don't. Hm... I'm having a really hard time trying to parse out my overall feelings on this set. I went into Cicero very excited, as I'm both very interested in the ancient world and also a person who enjoyed Tartarus, in the main range, immensely. And the front-half of this set met my high expectations easily--and exceeded them. A character-focused legal drama set near the end of the Roman Republic? That is precisely my jam. And an excellent example of a kind of story that would only ever really be possible in the realm of audio dramas.
Those first three or four stories had me itching to lay down a bit more money pre-ordering a second set ASAP. But then there's the back-half, which just kind of... falls apart. There's no real conflict in these stories to resolve, the political machinations in Rome fall to the wayside, and almost the entire runtime is devoted to trite character drama and some of the most cringe-worthy "sex" scenes I've ever had to endure. I'm sorry, but I just cannot do the loud, wet smacking-of-lips-and-tongue in audio. I just can't do it.
I'm also very much not a fan of how they chose to handle Cicero's homosexuality, and not just because they paired him off with a cardboard-cutout while writing so much chemistry between Cicero and his brother--it's hard to describe their interactions in the front half as anything less than flirty... which I presume was done to "foreshadow" the eventual reveal, but I dunno. It's just kind of squick and plays into unfortunate stereotypes of gay men.
Speaking of which, there's that particularly ugly trope of the gay man deceiving a woman he does not love in order to maintain a public-facing pretense of heteronormativity. Which apparently is a word that exists. Neat. Anyway, this character arc would have been much more palatable if they'd just had Cicero sit down with his wife, or wife-to-be, to explain himself so that they could enter into this partnership honestly. As it stands, I really can't sympathize with Cicero at all due to this scummy behavior, which is a bit of a problem, as sympathizing with a historical figure like a Cicero was *always* going to be an uphill battle.
It's also pretty disappointing that the back-half of the set is so bereft of drama and conflict that the last story concocts a contrived "prophecy" to try and create some stakes... stakes that rely are more on extrinsic factors than anything intrinsic to the story. Yeesh.
So, overall, yeah... I'm just left kinda lukewarm on this set. My affection for Rome and the furtive hope that Cato might feature in a future set will likely drive me to purchase any potential sequel set, but this range is going to have to "win me back."

Thought id get my thoughts on the pilot before i dive into the res of the series as it seems it is very divisive, some loving it. Some thinking it falls apart and some thinking none of the episodes live up to the first. Though there does seem to be a consensus that the first episode is great, which i suppose is because it is.
Much faster paced that i expected, expected a poriot style slow burner but it was surprisingly fast paced. Perhaps a little too fast paced though as it was released as a singular pilot episode, a proof of concept this can be forgiven. Hopefully some of the other cases have some time to breath. But the characters were great, as was the acting. It did a really good job of getting the audience familiar with these characters - repeating their names multiple times and the like which i appreciated considering the roman names can be quite tricky. Set up a lot of mystery and really built the world up whilst also keeping things simple. The last 20 minutes are the highlight and really makes the slightly rushed āinvestigationā worth it as Ciceros speech.
All very good, interested to see how i react to the upcoming episodes as i do tend to like things that people hate (hopefully i do like it as ive already ordered the followup story!)
As an aside, i did struggle to picture the characters as anything but character's from the Ace Attorney video game series which heavily focuses in Lawyers. Whenever they talk about clients and the case and everything like that i picture Cicero with Phoenixs face. But ah well iām sure ill visualise Sams face as the series goes on (maybes i should finally watch Dirk Gently which might help.)
Will keep updated on how i get along with it.
