I thought I wouldn't like this one but it turns out I thought it was pretty good.

I liked this story, but I'm a bit confused about the Rani's timeline now. She apparently left Miasimia Goria when none of her subjects could sleep and hasn't been back since. Why them, has she been to Lakertya and the CAGE since she tried to get the brain fluid, but she never tried to go back to her palace until after she was arrested? She's a Time Lady. Presumably she always intended to return shortly after she left, irrespective of the passage of personal time for her. What happened immediately after "Mark of the Rani" is covered in a Missing Adventures book.

Well the Doctor ruined her first attempt at curing the sleeplessness of the Miasmiean Gloria population, and she took years to do that. its possible the "Loyhargil" was attempt 2. the escape from the Tetraps cost her a body - or she intentionally forced a regeneration to mimic CB Wainwright. cue Rani Elite as part of experiment 3 to resolve the sleeplessness. in the end, she needed a TARDIS, cue the prison experiments.

Ran along side the New Adventures, featuring Doctors 1-6 in new stories. The Rani returns in State of Change.

So it's The Mark of the Rani, State of Change, Time of the Rani, The Rani Reaps the Whirlwind, The Rani Elite then Planet of the Rani. Also Dimensions in Time but nope. (Edit: actually checked the TARDIS wiki and there's even more Rani than I thought!)

Rather fun and actually does a bit of canon-welding between her two interpretations on television -- the disinterested chemist of The Mark of the Rani and the conquering warlord of Time and the Rani. You could slot it in just after Frobisher leaves that first time and the characters would fit rather snugly.

I'm going to see if I can pick it up, at some point. Edit: And...I just ordered a copy. No time like the present, I say.
