I *think* I understand most of Vortex Ice, but that was a lot to wrap up in two episodes. Going to have to give that another listen. Enjoyed these very much, Vortex Ice moreso. I need to draw a flowchart for it before it'll be straight in my head.

Okay. You have just put me off on this release. I'm sorry about that, it wasn't my intention to put anybody off. The music isn't widespread, it's just for a handful of scenes - it isn't like the story is one long comedy. Far from it. But those moments did rankle me more than a bit. Just my opinion though! Its not kust for comedic. It's also the occasional overly-dramatic sting. I hate it when they put intrusive DUMM DUMM DUMM's in and this one did it a few times. Not as bad as Domain of the Voord and I still enjoyed the story but it just annoys.

I need to draw a flowchart for it before it'll be straight in my head. I got a bit confused during Vortex Ice at times re which version of The Doctor/Flip it was. I assumed I nodded off during parts of it, but maybe I didn't? So I will relisten to Vortex Ice again later on before moving on to the next disc ( Cortex Fire) tomorrow.

You weren't the only one to be confused, me two too! The 'switch' (that puts the 'ice' Flip with 'non-ice' Doctor) was caused by the Doctor himself, when he's telling everyone to climb to safety up the ropes and says it doesn't matter which Flip goes first. But it does matter, because only one of them makes it - and it's his Flip who goes and the 'ice' Flip who gets stuck with him. I think... Not being a Time Lord, it's a bit hazy around the edges. I also need to draw myself a chart, probably in more than three dimensions...

Is it strange that I'm more confused after my second listen?

Is it strange that I'm more confused after my second listen? But are you sure it was the second listen...? This time round might really be the first... Really, only drawing a diagram will help IMO. Though that does seem a seriously analytical approach for a story that's 'just for fun'! The Doctor(s) flip Flips, twice, so there are two crossover points where a given version of the Doctor swaps the version of Flip he's with. (D+F & d+f / D+f & d+F / and repeat...) It's Flip-Flop again, but with that (literal) added twist - Flips' path through the story is a Mobius strip in audio form! Now I know why the second story was 'Cortex Fire'. I think they really combusted after thinking too hard about this story!

Fantastic release.
God, I've missed Flip. ("Chihuahua? Where the little dogs come from?" NEVER LEAVE, FLIP. EVER. YES, I KNOW SHE WILL, SHUT UP.)
I love how Big Finish are contiuning to built Six's journey from The Last Adventure - and very intrested to see how this will come into play later this year into Flip and Constance stories and the origin of Seven's modus operadi. While I don't think it'll mark Flip's exit completly, I do think it will be push for her to mature (while still being essentinally Flip) and inform her exit.
I do love the creative gaunlet that has been thrown with these stories - and as someone who felt the multi-Doctor triolgies slightly - and I mean very slightly - took away from the mythos of Who a little bit, I'd be happy to see them as a regular fixture of the year.
Sorry everyone, I've got a lot going on at the momment, so my reviews are going to be shorter.

One of the nice things about this place is there is no hint of pitchforks! I don't want to get overly sentimental about this, but one of the things I really do like about this place is how welcoming we are. Doctor Who fandom is huge and sprawling, and two people could conceivably be lifelong fans and not have any favorites in common. I love that we're not "My Doctor is better than your Doctor" but rather "This is what I love and why I love it and I want to share it with you!"
Flip is an adorable dork, you bastard!
I put it down to the moderation team on the original forum, personally. They really did a damn good job of maintaining a civil, warm friendly atmosphere - yes, there were one or two users who could have been better, but it wasn't the hell pit of the forums and at several points, the mods weren't afraid to toe the line and demand better.. And it was hard for feelings of disingenuous and the like which spread in fandom to emerge (honestly guys, just get comfortable with being a geek and accept it), when many member of the Big Finish team (as they do here) were approachable and human and often added to the discourse of all things Doctor Who.

To be honest, I'm quite fond of the Mod Team on here Cheers Tony

Is it strange that I'm more confused after my second listen? I was pretty confused my first time so much that I am not entirely sure what I thought of the story. I haven't done a relisten yet but I do like number13 idea of a diagram. I will say though that while it was mentioned in the story I just the felt that Flip having to let people die seemed to be somehow missing emotional weight for me. The story almost seemed too light feeling for me despite this part of the plot.

Vortex Ice was very good, if a bit confusing in parts. (I like to relax while listening to a story, not have to try and do mental flow charts!) I have listened to it twice now and it's a good time based story. The Vortex ice concept is really interesting too, we need to see more of that. The Sixth Doctor and Flip work really well together in this story, and Flip gets some lovely dialogue. It's a good team-up; Flip is fastly approaching the legendary Evelyn Smythe as my favourite Sixth Doctor companion. So yeah, a good enjoyable story.
I thought Cortex Fire was dull though. Just an average story, nothing special.

I though these were a pretty evenly matched pair of stories. I think I followed the first story alright. I did get confused which Flip was which sometimes but it felt like the story meant to keep me guessing and it helped uphold the sense of suspense and intrigue. I like Flip a lot. I like Constance too. Two very different companions, and both seem to have a good rapport with The Sixth Doctor - in that he's clearly very fond of them, moreso than with other supporting characters he meets in any one story. What sets them above the other people he meets, I don't know, but the same could be said for many of The Doctor's companions. They're boith good fun and well played and likeable. I don't really think you can ask for much more than that. They're both music to my ears. (Speaking of music, I didn't even notice the "comedy music". It must have been a pretty good story for me not to notice).

Finished these. Have to say, I'm still not enamoured with Flip lol. Cheers Tony I disliked the idea of Flip - but only until I first heard the character in action (in The Sixth Doctor - The Last Adventure). Then I was an instant convert! She's not (Rassilon be praised!) the street-smart token 'youf' companion I'd expected. She sparks off the Sixth Doctor perfectly. He's all experience, education, erudition and eloquence and she - isn't! And we are all much, much closer to being Flip than being the Doctor... I like a companion who often doesn't understand and isn't afraid to say so. It makes her a great companion, given that their primary role is to be explained to so we can get some kind of grip on the Doctor's latest incomprehensible plan. I must admit to feeling slightly guilty at times for enjoying lines like 'Chihuahua? Where the little dogs come from?' quite so much, and the Doctor's kind (if slightly weary) reply! But Flip has nerve and (sometimes reckless) determination and obviously knew what she was doing in 'Vortex Ice', which is more than I did the first time...

Finished up Vortex Ice on the drive home. Very, very good. Two big things stood out to me. 1) I miss Jonathan Morris and his writing when he isn't around and 2) the one hour format really convinces me Morris should be writing for the TV series proper. His work is just as timey-wimey as anything the TV show produces. Anyway, an excellent first half of a double bill with the caveat of Flip's role being kind of generic. It could have been almost any companion not named Flip in the role. I'll see how I feel after part two. Also, I miss Peri.
