Time to ask those more knowledgeable in the Alien Universe.
Mrs Acousticwolf received the Alien Quadrilogy on Blu Ray today and we are trying to work out which versions of each film to watch. I've heard that the Alien Theatrical release is the best but Alien 3 and Resurrection should be the Director's Cut. Views seem to be spilt on on which Aliens version is the best.
So, how do/would you view them - Theatrical or Director's Cut, and why?
I have only seen Alien (theatrical) but my better half has seen all of them (theatrical).
Any thoughts?
Cheers
Tony

The first movie, I'm divided, I've seen both versions, and don't have a preference.
The 2nd movie, I loved it in the theatre back when it came out. But later, when I got the extended version on disc, I found I liked that one better.
I really think I ought to watch 3 and 4 in their alternate versions, as I really didn't enjoy my time in the theatre watching them when they were new.

Here's how I watch them:
Alien - Director's cut (It's nearly identical to the theatrical cut, but there's one major scene added that heightens the horror in the third act)
Aliens - Director's cut (A richer, more moving version that fills in some character backstory)
Alien3 - Theatrical cut (The effects on the director's cut are incomplete. It's basically a work print and kind of hard to watch in places)
Alien: Resurrection - Director's cut (Again, a richer experience with some key scenes added that enhance the characters)

Only watch a trilogy......
Quadrilogy is a stupid made up word, to include a stupid pointless 4th movie
theatrical cut for 1 & 3, directors cut for 2.....

The alternates are my preferred option though Aliens works better as a first time watch with the theatrical cut as one of the added scenes shows you some alien action before the big reveal with the marines.

Yeah, on ALIENS, I fully understand why all that extra footage was either left out or cut short for the theatrical version.
But I agree with Davy, for later viewings that footage does help give the movie a bit more overall emotional heft.

nitpicking maybe - but the longer version of Aliens is the special edition it is NOT a director's cut
a director's cut is when the director edits the film to his liking including the scenes he (or she) likes and removing the scenes he (or she) doesn't like.
if someone-else restores the scenes the director removed (as happened with Aliens) it is not a director's cut
On not showing the aliens before the "big reveal" - I think the title is too big a clue for them to be a surprise to the audience
One problem i had with my copy of the quadrology on DVD is that there seemed to have been an error with the chapter breaks of the Aliens special edition so the end of one chapter was repeated at the beginning of the following chapter

Yes, a nitpick, but whatever the box or DVD menu is programmed to label it, I personally still consider something of a Director's Cut. Why? Well, it is all footage that the director elected to hire cast for, staged it, had the sets built, and got it captured on film. Enough at least, so that it wasn't too difficult to finish and insert back into the running time.

I'd say:
Alien - Theatrical
Aliens - Special Edition
Alien 3 - Assembly Cut
Alien Resurrection - Theatrical
