The history behind the character of Doctor Omega is absolutely fascinating, he's not a knock-off proxy as you first might expect. He was actually invented by an early eighteenth-century French writer who was inspired by the writings of the prolific Herbert George Wells. Predating Doctor Who by several decades, the original publication possessed illustrations of Doctor Omega by artist E. Bouard that bore an uncanny resemblance to the First Doctor. Much in the same way that the Twelfth Doctor coincidentally turns up in a fresco painted during the Great Patriotic War of Russia. One of the universe's little jokes.

what is this? dr who fan fic? Doctor Omega was a French sci-fi novel written in 1906 with some illustrations done for the post-publication serialization in chapbook form in 1908. A lot of elements of the story match up serendipitously with early Doctor Who, down to the illustrations looking a lot like Hartnell. So, if anything, Doctor Who is just a TV adaption of some Doctor Omega fanfic, not the other way round

My copy of The Silent Planet arrived today in its smart little slipcase. It has an accompanying little comic that lays the groundwork of the continuing adventure thread, but the audio itself drops you right in the middle of things. It's a little jarring, but the case does go out of its way to remind you that this is just a preview and that the "full adventure", entitled The Galapagos Planet, will be part of another publication.
The conceit is that Doctor Omega is on the run from the watchful eye of his people, and has built a "Tuner" that he uses to tune the dimensions like a radio dial. It has the remarkable ability to disguise itself as something native to where its landed. He and his neighbor cum travelling companion flit between alternate planets and get into random adventures. In practice, it's no different than The Doctor in the TARDIS travelling through space.
As for the story itself... well, it's very John Peel. And it's very much The First Doctor & Companion Denis Borel. John Guilor does his Hartnell voice for The Doctor (as he's often called in the narrative, every once and a while tacking the 'Omega' onto the title), a younger voice for Borel, and his own voice for the narration. There's nice sound design, fx, and background noise with the occasional incidental music.
It plays out very much like something I'd expect to see in the old TV Comic Doctor Who strips, with strange Vernian robots and a strange alien land that has ruins but is otherwise devoid of people, or any other type of fauna.
A nice little yarn, just under 22 minutes, I'm looking forward to the full release.

Guilor's Hartnell is something quite nice, I must say. Not perfect, but good enough that I could listen to him read a full-cast story as the First Doctor, in the same way that I can enjoy a Treloar story.

Yeah I wouldn't object to him doing some CCs to see how it goes, and then maybe moving him over to the Early Adventures. If Russell is indeed retiring from the role, perhaps we could see how well Guilor does Ian as well...

I honestly think the EAs or STs would be a better fit at first - he could narrate with his own voice and play a non-Doc character or two. He does have a good (and distinct) normal voice. Although I think Elliot Chapman might give him a run for his money. We'll have to see/hear what the First Doctor CC set sounds like.

Yeah I thought for sure the Silent Planet thing was advertised as a teaser episode for future audios, and then, like, nothing ever came of that. I'm glad we're getting more Doctor Omega, but Who Dares has been inconsistent at best about updates.
