Yes. They knew they were creating something for an established franchise and a loyal fanbase. In a country with slightly more sane copyright laws, this would be work for hire and an entirely new generation could be enjoying the work. However, UK laws seem to allow authors to be prissy little brats over the subject. It's a real shame, as the works are bigger than they are. Put it this way - isn't it better that we can have commercially available copies of the eps than not. Would it be a good thing if there were holes in the collection because the screenwriter decided they didn't like how the episodes turned out? It's not just authors. It took a lot of work to secure the release of Tomb of the Cybermen on video after it was recovered as one actress was reluctant to give her permission.

Authors have a right to protect their work without being called names. Some may be more reasonable than others about it, but there is no obligation on their part to permit reprint of work that has gone out of print. I'm sure there are many factors involved, most of which we are not privy to. Let's not get in this line of discussion again - we already had one thread locked, a while back, when the tone turned to this type of discussion.

It's ever so curious that Big Finish hasn't announced anything in regards to the digital re-realeases of the novels. Maybe, just maybe, they are announcing the digital releases of the single releases?!?!?!

That would be awesome, digital releases of the single releases!
It's hard to believe an intern hasn't sorted this out by now.

For all we know they've been converted for ages but someone on the cast just hasn't signed digital release forms, or doesn't want to, or like the much missed Nick Courtney has died and then it gets more complicated over who signs for their work. If it was just down to an intern only then we probably would have them by now.

I doubt they even need converting. Even back to the oldest releases, Big Finish titles appear to be held as digital masters (if you've bought through Humble Bundle you can access copies of these Masters which are better quality than either CD or MP3). Putting them online as mp3 files will be no harder than burning CD's

It is that easy. Just do it. No one is going to sue over a couple spoken lines, especially with big finish compensating them as soon as they reveal themselves.
Fun idea. Audiobooks of the Bernie novels. Full cast would probably be expensive, but single reader could be done reasonably.

Maybe it is but it's also illegal and sets a bad precedent for the future in that performers may think twice about working for a company who ignores their contracted rights. Anyway, we're off topic here 😏

And in the news article they have said that this is part of the plan to digitize, which I know has been going on forever, but could this mention be a foreshadow that they are making serious progress?!?!?!

I had tweeted Nick earlier in the week and not received an answer as to when these would be up to order. I like to think that he saw that and it led to them putting them up for pre-order.
And they are in my account and will be read once they are out next month.
I wouldn't be surprised if we slowly start to see other items become available for download as the year progresses.

Yup, just saw this, too! Instant pre-order, even though I actually now own a physical copy of The Squire's Crystal! We want to encourage this behavior!

I have no idea so would like to know lol most devices can read .epub (the MP3 of the books) version with out any additional app, which they are sure to be released as. also they are doing a PDF as well though this is not a good if you change text size etc. .Mobi is the one that you need if you have a kindle, although they can use PDF and epub too. was this what you wanted to know??? basically if you have a tablet or phone you will be able to use any format, may just need to download an app if you have an E-reader epub for almost all, mobi for kindle but you will need to probably download to a computer then to your phone etc.

Whilst I very much support the idea of authors being able to protect their work, there is a line when one has to regard what is produced as laughingdevil becomes work for hire and the copyright not reside with the author but with the person/organisation paying for it. It seems to me that work commissioned and paid for by an organisation, should belong to that organisation and not the author.
