So, where do you stand on the long gestated film adaptation of the grandaddy of sci-fi adventure stories, now that all the bad press and weird hype have faded. Bad, average or a gem worthy of another trip?

I thought it wasn't half bad. Even though the plot and acting weren't of a high quality, The Effects were amazing and I just had a lot of fun.

The final act let it down, i felt character arcs were unresolved possibility because Disney banked on a franchise, a average watch but not a classic.

The cardinal sin of a number of movies in recent years. Green Lantern waited until just before the end before letting Sinestro wearing the yellow ring, when having a fear wielding Sinestro would have improved the film immensely. I'm imagining that he releases Parallax, and siphons off fear energy during the final battle and weakens the Fear Entity enough for Hal to defeat it. There's still the threat of a powered-up Sinestro down the road, but at least we see him use yellow. We never really found out the big mystery behind Peter's parents in the Amazing Spider-Man films, with the second one being extended set-up for Sinister Six project currently in limbo. Ghostbusters (2016) only let the team have the firehouse at the end of the film, labouring us with Abby's wonton soup gripes (as in even when they were based above the Chinese restaurant her preferences weren't catered for) for longer than we had to tolerate them. At least Passengers didn't try force in a sequel hook, it's a one and done franchise. Film writers shouldn't bank on sequels, and let plot and character arcs be resolved, while leaving the bigger picture open in the event the sequels are green lit.

It's a cardinal error of some films nowadays where they forget that you can set up your next film... in your next film. The first thirty to forty-minutes of films like From Russia with Love, Aliens or The Wrath of Khan are there to essentially set the stage for what is to come soon after. I really liked John Carter when I saw it. It had some inventive and unobtrusive worldbuilding elements, an interesting visual aesthetic, but it definitely suffered from wanting to set up a trilogy rather than existing as a story in its own right. There's a few moments here and there that seem to defy explanation and throwing out the atmospheric plant from the novel in the final act doesn't really help matters either. Although, it would have been interesting to see a sequel that combined both The Gods of Mars and The Warlord of Mars together into a single cohesive narrative. That may have gone down quite a lot better.

Hit the nail on the head my friend that is exactly this trouble with movies today there thinking franchise before they have a box office smash, I loathe Amazing Spider-Man 2, Ghostbusters i walked out of the cinema, Green Lantern had potential but it didn't deliver a spectacular extravaganza & the action scenes were very average despite Martin Campbell being a great director sci-fi is not his forte. But John Carter disappointed me because some of the movie was really good but it lacked a climatic epic battle & the ending i assume was to set to lead directly into John Carter 2, like you said get the first film set up & resolved, maybe drop subtle hints at sequels but not as to ruin the film if it doesn't get turned into a franchise. Warcraft is another trilogy bait movie, but did it do well enough for a sequel though?

I really enjoyed John Carter, it was alot better than i heard and i found that Disney had ballsed up the marketing for it. I would have loved a sequel to this
With Warcraft, i think it's its grosses in China that may guarantee a sequel
