I finally have the idea for my story. It's silly little Sixie-on-his-own monologue with minimal interaction by other characters and should be great fun to write. It doesn't meet Ian Atkin's criteria for his preferred type of story, but that just isn't me as a writer. The last time I wrote my story, it was for Big Finish and left me feeling deflated. I'll still submit my idea, but this time I'm primarily writing for me, and I plan to enjoy every minute... Chriss C. Whatever works for you, go for it. Those are simply suggestions from Ian. If you're confident in your instincts, then what harm can it do? Thank you for the encouragement.
At the very least, I hope that I raise a smile or two at Big Finish, and if I enjoy the writing process, winning won't seem so important...

I think that's the best way to look at it, because if none of us on here win we are still having fun.

Good luck with the writing process!

I realised last night that my robot story... doesn't need the doctor at all...
So I'm thinking of doing it. But not for BF.

Hello again.
How are all you writers doing? I've just listened to Forever Fallen. What a hard act to follow. I've also listened to an interview with Ian Atkins. He revealed how he knew Paul Spragg, it is not surprising he was so well regarded. From what I can gather he was one of those people who just got on with it.
This writing opportunity is a really good way of remembering Paul. Last year's competition restarted my writing after a 15 year break. I ended up with several different ideas to work on.
I have only just come up with an idea. I So, my entry, will feature Doctor 3 and Liz Shaw in another exciting adventure with the Silurians...oh wait a minute...bother, I'd better go and have a think. Bonnes chance mes amis!

Given it's been a few pages, I'll just bump up Ian's suggestions for latecomers:
1) Emotionally moving. Preferably with some type of extra 'kick' at the end to really hit it home i.e. the daughter in Forever Fallen. 2) Intimate over epic, and character driven. A chance to really get inside someone's head, and it doesn't have to specifically be the Doctor or companion. 3) Optimistic. Not necessarily saccahrine, sappy or a happy happy ending, but something to do with overcoming or perservering. 4) Ideally, not a comedy or too 'jokey'. The implication being it's not appropriate for a memorial competition, and the writer comes off as not taking the opportunity seriously. This does actually line up with BF's stories, ST and MRs alike, over the last few years, where they've been moving away from funnier tales and writers like Fountain and Sweet. 4b) Also, proof read/read aloud so nothing is unintelligible or clumsy. And 4c) Death and bereavement, while effective, were a really common theme in stories last year, and made reading submissions more emotionally taxing, given the contest's sad origins. And for a 4d) Ian prefers small to larger amounts of submissions per writer. Try to restrain down to 1, maybe 2 max, and save the others that don't fit the above for a future Time Shadows or Temporal Logbook or other Who opportunity.

My tom and cabbage story is called...
Canny Valley
But .. like I said. It actually works better without a doctor.
Shame. It's a great title

Going to enter next year. Sorry everyone, but I have chronic fatigue and a currently very busy life, so it makes writing a bit difficult.

My tom and cabbage story is called... Canny Valley But .. like I said. It actually works better without a doctor. Shame. It's a great title If you want, you could go the route of backup comic strips from DWM and have the Doctor recount, but not actually be involved in the story. That could be fun. You could have him muddling up some of the details in typical Fourth Doctor fashion. Going to enter next year. Sorry everyone, but I have chronic fatigue and a currently very busy life, so it makes writing a bit difficult. Know that feeling, I just had the lowermost step up to the second floor of the house collapse beneath me. The whole staircase has become one big, bloody death trap. It needs fixing sooner rather than later.

I've knocked out four ideas. Not sure if I'll narrow them down or just submit all four, because I can't really pick a favorite and they did say there wasn't a limit (which still surprises me)... Thanks for posting Ian Atkin's criteria: I've revised one story away from being about death, which I think actually improved it.
