I was wondering about buying the series, but ive heard just bits and pieces of people, namely Tom Baker, stating that it really wasn't that good. That sort of worries me. If the actor didn't like it, I'm not sure I will, but if figured id see if anyone else has listened to it.
Can you help me out?

Personally I found the Nest Cottage series was less than stellar. It got better as the series progressed, but Hornets' Nest was just awful. Demon Quest was better and Serpent Crest was the best of the lot.

I listened to it, and wished I had given up!
I found Hornet's Nest dull and boring... everything the BF Fourth Doctor audios are not.

I actually on the whole enjoyed Hornets Nest. It's a bit hit and miss at times but the narration is great and there's some really good ideas. I didn't enjoy Demon Quest quite as much and haven't listened to Serpent Crest yet.

Tom Baker took several episodes to really get the idea that he was supposed to be acting rather than narrating, but eventually the series got into its stride. It's not to be compared with a full-cast BF drama, or even a Companion Chronicle, but ought to be enjoyed in its own right. Mrs Wibbsey isn't likely to turn up anywhere else, and I doubt that David Troughton will be reprising *his* particular role, either.

Ok, that's 2 for and 2 emphatic against's with a dose of eh, why not thrown in...
If it was 20 US dollars, bout 15 pounds(est.)for the whole 5 disc set, would you invest in it? Cause that will buy a couple of used BF audios

I've enjoyed many of Paul Magrs contributions, but sadly, the Nest Cottage Saga wasn't one of them. Things get a little too whimisical, even by Who standards and it begins to grate, even with Tom Baker at the helm. It's an effort to create a new and distinct era for Four, but it doesn't quite work. (Something, I'm hoping Big Finish will do for his character at some point)
Minor spoilers I did check out a later release with the return of a significant character from the Who mythos, but the character was appallingly handled and cast in more sinister hues because of....reasons? I
Oddly enough, one of the compliants about the releases I have no problem with is the overabundance of narration from Four (in which he imparts his past adventures to Mike Yates) - aiming for a 'return to bedttime' feeling. I can see why others didn't take to it, though.

Thanks for all the info, I think I'm gonna pass for now. Still to many good BF audios out there to gamble on something that may or may not be enjoyable to myself.

I picked up all three Nest Cottage releases bundled in one package for $40 new a few months ago. I've made it mostly through Hornet's Nest, it registers as generally more narrative and somewhat less dramatic audio than say full cast with frequent explosions, but I've mostly been enjoying the stories, that they make up in Tom Baker for what they may lack in other things, and that Hornet's Nest pairs up the 4th Doctor and 3rd Doctor companion Mike Yates. (I rather like Richard Franklin's Companion Chronicles and 3DA appearances also).

I actually quite liked it. There is more narration in the first few and Tom hasn't quite rediscovered his voice yet.

I gave it a pass. A lot of folks seem to like it, others hate it, and I can buy at least 1, maybe 2 BF MR title I don't have instead of this. So thanks for the info yall.

I mostly liked it though it isn't a patch on the BF output. It did at least one good thing in that Tom worked out a lot of kinks in coming back as the Doctor there rather than in the BF stories. Rather backhanded praise I know.

When it 1st came out it was wow! toms back as the doctor at last, but it didn't live up to expectations.
It not really drama or audio book, it's more like a graphic audio style of production.
It's ok, not unlistenable but it feels like Tom baker & not the doctor. The stories are hit & miss. They get better but never hit the heights, a bad BF 4th doc story is better than even the best of these.
It's time has passed somewhat, as BF have done much better stuff with Tom, and many of the doctor who audio books are better too.
Don't dismiss it forever, but BF are better to spend your $ on for now.
