After Amazon struggling to sell it for the longest time (it was in many flash sales!), the Eccleston Series 1 steelbook is now going for £200 on ebay, it's actually selling for that too, not just some chancer asking megabucks for it.
So along with Tom's series 12 which is going for easily £400 if you include the fixed discs and the Capaldi Series 9 steel (fetching about £250-ish)....there's the best part of £1000 in just those three for anyone thinking of selling up! Makes Lungbarrow and The Dying Days seem rather quaint in terms of Who merch going for big money.

Pic of the S12 steel. Stunning art. Makes it all the odder that this fits into the painted cover range that now covers S1-5 (S6 in a few months) and S9-10...but that S11 came with a photo silhouette cover making it very much the odd one out..

Love the art. I agree that it makes Series 11 seem like an odd decision, especially when it was an Amazon exclusive like Series 9&10.

What gorgeous pieces of art. I love this TARDIS team and I’ve always loved Matt in the green coat. I haven’t gotten any of these for the older series, as I own them on BluRay already and hold out hope they’ll be in The Collection one day, but the artwork is always top notch. I think this one might be my favourite.

Gorgeous indeed. Instant Pre-Order
It'll be interesting to see what they do with season 7. Ie Season 7 Plus all the specials or Season 7, then another steelbook with Day of the doctor and all the specials on one??

That's a good shout actually. I only have the 50th Anniversary set on DVD, so I think I'd be tempted by a steelbook, whether it's another Specials set or part of Series 7, which is one of my favourites.

My copy arrived this morning and it looks gorgeous. Bit disappointed that the discs are the exact same ones from the original BR set though (they haven't even changed the artwork on the discs to match the previous sets...) - at least the Specials and S5 sets reduced the amounts of discs (and the Specials even included extra stories that weren't originally included in the previous Specials releases). Unfortunately comes across as a bit lazy compared to the last two releases.

The Specials and S5 original blus were manufactured at the wrong frame rate so them being changed was more correction than anything else. The Region A blurays of the Specials were always at the correct speed, it was Region B that wasn't. So they decided to get them right this time. The animations were added to make the 25 quid price point a bit more palatable, I suspect - the HD master of Dreamland was already done and Infinite Quest was in SD upscaled anyway. As far as I remember Series 1-3 were just repackages with the same discs and art too as they didn't need anything changed. The only time you'll get any substantial additions is when they start The Collection range for the 2005+ series.

Won't hold my breath then. It'll probably be about 5 years before they're done with the Classic Series

The only time you'll get any substantial additions is when they start The Collection range for the 2005+ series.Wait, do we know they're actually doing that? (*tries not to raise hopes too much in case this is speculation*) Russell Minton addressed it in the DWM Yearbook and the only thing he'll say, or that there is to say, is "We want to do that but we're concentrating on this (the classic releases) first", Chris Chapman has said similiar with a "We'd like to, yeah.." but after the classics are milked, "New" Who will be 20 years old itself. A lot older than the gap from when the classic series finished to when the DVD range launched with all the warts and all behind the scenes stuff - 1989 was obviously the end of the show, 1999 was the launch of the DVD range. And for the guys and gals making the sets I'd imagine they'll want to get their teeth into that too. They've produced amazing new extras to complement the existing ones but you've got to think they'd love to be the ones who get to make the whole lot, the big Making Ofs, the Era documentaries, the behind the scenes drama etc rather than adding on to the classic DVD sets which were already really stacked. The BBC will need to have something to be able to sell by monetizing the show and 20 years on you'd think there'll be less "It's all wonderful" as you get when the sets are released and the people involved are all still working on the show. While physical media declines, niche releases are selling better than ever and the Who sets of course lead the way. They're selling out still despite the print run being increased from where they thought they could reasonably hit the top end of sales when S12 was announced. It's fair to say even BBCWW were taken aback how popular The Collection has been. Even the "unpopular" Doctor's releases sold out in a couple of weeks and I think collectors are now on board for the long haul. Understandably people didn't talk about, say, Eccleston's issues on the Season 1 season set we got in 2005. Yet he's had a book out which went through it all. RTD spoke about it. Collinson spoke about it. So even if Chris doesn't want to talk, the stories are out there and no-one's confidence would be broken by talking about the deeper production issues and problems we get on classic Who releases in documentaries and interviews. Ditto CE's non-return for the 50th, or the BBC vetoing Moffat's idea for McGann to be the backup, not a new character who turned into The War Doctor, that was the BBC's idea to get a name in as McGann wasn't a big enough deal for the 50th for what they wanted to be a huge worldwide thing. That kinda thing you wouldn't put on the 50th Anniversary box we did get in 2013, but you can in The Collection: 50th Anniversary in 2030 or whatever. There's no way they leave the money on the table of not doing the BBC Wales series after the classics. Just a matter of time I think. Even if that's 5 years away rather than anytime soon. The Collection actually outsells the New Series by quite a number. I'm not sure back when it launched and they didn't know it would take off, anyone at BBCWW would have thought that possible. To be fair though, the entire New Series is on the I-Player free so that surely dents at least some sales.

There’s so much potential for The Collection to delve into the post-2005 stuff without even making new content! And with time having passed, there’s more scope than ever for retrospectives.
We’re also very fortunate that a sheer amount of cast and crew are fans of the show, or are actively playing their characters thanks to Big Finish, that we should have a lot of contributors. Steven Moffat has been honest about his time on the show ever since he left, with what he didn’t think worked, what nightmares and stress he had at certain periods of the show. A recent DWM piece where RTD & Moffat interviewed each other was really interesting and revealing; I’d love to see the pair get stuck into special features on their eras as part of The Collection.
Waiting for their inevitable inclusion in The Collection is part of the reason I haven’t delved into the steelbook re-releases. I bought the BluRay’s of Series 1-4 at the time and they saved some space on the shelves too. All the other series I’ve had on BluRay as they’ve come out. The exception is the 50th Anniversary set, which I got on DVD for reasons I can’t remember. I’d get a steelbook for that definitely for the BluRay upgrade and to have it in one nice case.

I love the artwork! It’s reminded me just how fond I am of Series 7 and how distinct the two parts of the series are. I’d probably use a different image of the 7b Eleven (I’ve never liked that promo pic for some reason, despite loving the outfit!), but it’s gorgeous overall.
I haven’t been collecting the steelbooks for already released series, but I’m definitely up for the 50th Anniversary steelbook when that comes round, presumably next year. It’ll be nice to retire that great big box!
