It’s really exciting how close we’re getting to a full set of New Who steelbooks.

Season 7 steelbook is still a few weeks from release but two more steelbooks are now available to pre-order, possibly a proper announcement to follow later today to mark the 57th birthday of the show. The 50th Anniversary Collection www.zoom.co.uk/product/doctor_who_50th_anniversary_limited_edition_steelbook_blu_rayThe Web of Fear www.zoom.co.uk/product/doctor_who_the_web_of_fear_limited_edition_steelbook_blu_rayWeb is also coming out again on DVD and Blu-ray. Zoom listing just says there’s a new animation of the missing episode. Hopefully there’ll be more extras that otherwise it’s pretty expensive for little new content. No release dates for either yet. Will be buying both even though already have almost all of the content, and even though the rewatch I’m enjoying immensely with the wife at the moment is just via iPlayer. Fingers crossed the next classic series blu-ray announcement is also imminent.

Just looking at The Web of Fear one - it says "This release includes all 5 surviving episodes, plus a brand new fully animated reconstruction of the missing 6th episode". Is this confirmation that they've actually animated the missing episode, or is just a more marketable spin on a standard photo-recon?

That sounds exciting because "fully animated reconstruction" must mean what it says, mustn't it? Either that or it's several thousand refunds waiting to happen! There is no way that even the best photo-based recons (though impressive) could be described as 'fully animated'. No doubt we'll get screenshots etc. as usual anyway and hopefully this release is "the full Yeti" with commentaries, interviews & docs.
(Presumably this means they've given up hope of the actual episode 3, which is a pity.)

I would be genuinely surprised if the people responsible for choosing the animations considered the likelihood of episode recovery in their choices. If the episodes come back at some point then great, but if they can make a commercial use of what still exists then I'm sure they're going to make the most of the opportunity. If I were a cynical man (which I sure some people already think), I'd say they know know they have a chance of getting the episode back at some point and are trying to make extra money now by releasing an animated version so they can make more money off a recovered version later

Two instant preorders! Looks like it was the 50th artwork that Lee Binding was teasing on his Twitter yesterday.

Just pre-ordered them both.
The 50th Anniversary artwork is stunning, with a really big emphasis on the War Doctor, which I love. I only have the previous set on DVD (I can’t remember why I didn’t go with the BD!) and it’s really bulky for such little gain, so I’ll be happy to replace that on the shelf. It’ll also be the first time I have The Time of the Doctor on BluRay too.
Looking forward to The Web of Fear, though I can’t help but feel they’ve been a bit cheeky with the price on this one; dearer than the other animations for considerably less. I’m interested to hear more, particularly as I feel this one will be a throwback to the earlier animations, where individual episodes were animated, rather than the projects they undertake now, which allows them more creative freedom.

No commentary tracks, we don't seem to get them so much anymore on new who.

No commentary tracks, we don't seem to get them so much anymore on new who. I don’t think that was ever going to happen. We didn’t get them back in 2014 when the set was first released, so we were never going to get them now for what is essentially a re-release in new packaging. Would be nice, though, and perhaps one of the more eagerly anticipated features when these inevitably form part of The Collection in however many years time.

True, hopefully one day given that new who is all on iplayer. No real incentive for me to purchase.

My 50th Anniversary steelbook arrived today. Beautiful, crisp artwork and some brushed steel areas to make it really pop.
It was an easy purchase for me, as I love the trilogy and all that came with the 50th Anniversary and only had the DVD edition of the bulky set. When The Collection inevitably covers the post-2005 series, this steelbook will happily get framed and displayed.

Series 8 steelbook now available to pre-order. Quick turnaround; it's out on the 19th April - www.zavvi.com/blu-ray/doctor-who-the-complete-series-8-steelbook/12913580.html Am tempted by this one, as I had the BBC Shop version, but unfortunately the batteries died a death not long after! And that completes the collection for the post-2005 run (Revolution of the Daleks aside, I suppose)! I'm sure Series 9 & 10 will get the same style treatment, perhaps the latter including Twice Upon A Time.

Re-doing it to get the special in there seems like the best reason for doing so, absolutely. The S9 one was exclusive to Amazon so a wider release may happen, though the Eccleston one was also an Amazon only edition and that's not been redone. Hard to say what they'll do as this S8 set - Twice Upon A Time and Revolution aside - means they've all been out now, even if they're mostly long out of print.

It was a nice surprise to see an email from Zavvi announcing S8! That was a quick pre-order. I really do hope they do S9 at the very least, due to it's limited availability. I'd love for them to do S10 and 11 in the new style (especially the latter, because I'm not crazy about the artwork used for that steelbook...)

Someone clearly realised with S12 that doing one that fit with this range meant not having to re-do it later, but no-one was that smart for S11 I guess!

Excellent news that Series 8 is imminent, and so soon after the 50th one. This will give me a complete set of steelbooks from S1 to S12.
Unless they continue on and do S9 again in the summer, then I'd be starting on a second set of steelbooks...
They could then do S10 again shortly after that, then S11 and so on before going back round to S1 as they embark on a never-ending cycle of steelbook reissues till we all die.
I mean, they may well do so because they know there are fools like me that will keep buying, paying out £25-30 each time for completionist/unabletoresistiness sake just to get the exact same content again but with a(nother) pretty new cover or a free postcard.

I am missing Zoom today. Zavvi only just processed my (2 month old) Pre-Order today, so I will not see the Season 8 Steelbook until the end of the week, where as with (good old)Zoom, it would have been on the shelf since Friday / Saturday. And paying for postage - Not cool! #firstworldproblems

Finally complete BBC Wales era Doctor Who on steelbook! Oh...except Twice Upon A Time which is still only on an orphan release.
