On the old forum there was some discussion about the Sarah Sutton Short Trips release The Toy, given as a free gift with Doctor Who: The Complete History. My copy arrived this morning, with The Toy on CD. Normally being a download only customer I don't know if there is much difference with the packaging from normal, this looks to be a standard booklet (front cover, back cover with blurb, and the inside pages devoted to Big Finish adverts).
The CD is 60 minutes long, but approx. half of that appears to be the documentary "Inside the Audio Worlds of Doctor Who", which claims to have interviews with the stars and producers of the many big finish ranges. It sounds like it might be trailers and snippits of behind the scenes stuff of BF's complete output rather than interviews about The Toy, but as I haven't listened to it yet, I can't say.
Cheers
Tony

I also received my CD today with my Complete History books; haven't listened to it yet but is it not possible this could be more Companion Chronicles length than the typical 30-40 minutes of a Short Trip?
I'm saying this because the Companion Chronicles release 'The Beginning' only counts the two episodes in its running time. Whilst this is a Short Trip, given that it is a free gift rather than one available to buy as part of the ST range it could be that this is essentially a 60 minute Companion Chronicle.

I don't think so because the running time of the CD is 60 minutes and it includes the story and the documentary. Of course I haven't played it yet do I could be wrong Cheers Tony

Vortex once listed it as part of the current Short Trip download series however it was removed from the release schedule to become an exclusive for the Complete History (possibly due to the editor being part of the Big Finish team) so the normal half-hour approx length should be expected.
Current normal CD packaging is front cover, same image with Dr-specific different logo on the back cover with adverts and production credits inside
(many older releases have extra pages with art, photos, notes from a couple of people usually writer and director)
[edit - it was listed in Vortex 66 and 67 for March 2015 release but replaced in the Vortex 69 list]

I've now listened to this and it is indeed the half hour length, as is normal for Short Trips. Starting the documentary now (so far Nick Briggs and Dave Richardson talking about who Big Finish are, and it seems to be up to date as far as Unit Extinction ...) Quite a good story, lots happening so I will have to re-listen but I think Billy2 will enjoy it . Cheers Tony

How come this story is out already? I've checked my Hatchette account and it's not been released yet. Is this something to do with the earlier subscribers' thing with 'The Complete History'? I don't want to read any spoilers on this as I want to be surprised. I'm sure I'll enjoy it when it comes out. Tim.

Shame it isn't available to Canadians - maybe I'll get lucky and I'll be able to find it for a decent price on ebay.

Thanks Tony. Tim.

Listened to this yesterday; I enjoyed it probably about as much but maybe slightly less than Flywheel Revolution. Very good for a freebie and interesting how the titular toy turned out to be Susan's given to her by the Master. Thanks Tony. Tim. There's two postage streams: one that's dispatched a week before the first book is released and another two weeks after that. I'm not sure how you've ended up in the second one because I subscribed after you on the 9th September and I'm in the first postage stream.

My second delivery was on the 26th September, so hopefully I'll get my third with the 'The Toy' by the end of this week. I'll keep checking my account. Thanks. Tim.

I'll listen to the CD once my mum is able to forward me my post from home. Shame it's not a download in that regard.

I also received my copy on Saturday along with the fourth and fifth parts of the collection.
I really should give the books a proper read through to see if I do want to carry on or cancel my subscription. The completist in me is now seeing five books on the shelf and wanting the full set though...
I also note that there are already a few folk selling this CD on eBay for those only interested in getting it.

Knowing Ebay, it would probably be cheaper for said people to start the subscription for the CD and pay £27 for it (taking both first and second deliveries into account and assuming you'd go for the standard subscription).

Perhaps, and the five current listings for this item are sitting at between £4 and £22 at present. I have bought loads of Who-related items from eBay over the last couple of months though and got some supposedly rare and sought after items for very reasonable prices, often be being the only bidder. The first Big Finish Cyberman cd, Scorpius, for example. BF only sell it on download now but I got a new and still sealed CD on eBay for just £10.

Last Complete History parcel I received was issue 2 and 3 with the flask and wallet (which I'll probably place on eBay unless anyone on here wants it), so still waiting on The Toy. (I subscribed prior to the release of issue 1)

I got it last week with Parcel 2. So for £10 total (since I subbed way back in the Spring) I got the mug, the wallet, 5 books and - crucially - the BF story I've cancelled now because I've got too much going on, not to mention the shelf room, but for a tenner I did OK

Guess I'll have to wait until next month then.
