I prefer the first volume. The individual stories appealed to me more (Fall of the House of Pollard being the best) and the cliffhanger was And The Adventure Continues. Volume 2 didn't feel like a a complete story to me, at least in regard to Bertram's mission and the completely left-field final disc.

Volume 2 didn't feel like a a complete story to me, at least in regard to Bertram's mission and the completely left-field final disc. Just finished it. All in all I enjoyed the experience. It had some great cliffhangers throughout, but I think my final thoughts about the set cannot be known until I hear the resolutions to the at least two major cliffhangers at the end. So, yes, not quite complete until we hear at least some of Series 3. I can't believe what they put Charley and Robert through in that final disc.

I did not care for Series 2. The first three episodes were little more than a single story unnecessarily dragged out over three hours--I had a hard time bothering to pay attention--and then the final story was just...completely out of the blue.
I would be very happy to recommend Series 1 to people, but this? Pass.

Sooooo... Series 2 wasn't worth the wait? Considering Nick had several years to write it, no. I'd have been happier if another writing team had been on board. That was probably how we got the first volume five years after it was first promised. Nick had to hand over the writing for both Cyberman Series 2 and Dark Eyes on to other people because he didn't have the time.

That's sad to hear considering she is a product of Big Finish... Gotta treat your properties with respect.

Now that I have finally struggled through listening to this release I find it difficult to articulate my thoughts without it sounding too negative. This is after all only my opinion. The opinion of a fan of Charley and of India Fisher and most of all a fan of Big Finish.
I know that a lot of talented people have worked on this release including Nick Briggs who I have always held in a very high regard.
But this has tainted my love and I will not be so eager to pre-order anything other then Doctor Who and Jago & Litefoot in the future.
For now I will simply content myself with a one word review...
Disappointing.

For now I will simply content myself with a one word review... Disappointing. That's pretty much how I felt about the first set so I won't be bothering wth this second solo outing. Charlotte Pollard is a companion, and a damn good one at that, she belongs with a Doctor. Full stop.

Hmm. Not sure what I think. This release is never going to set the world on fire, but it's not terrible either. Enjoyed first 3 episodes well enough, episode 4 a bit too bleak.
The story itself was not bad, but the character of Charley is not really suited to the present day thriller genre that episodes 1-3 were. The story Nick wanted to tell might have been better told in Torchwood or a series like that. IMHO the character of Charley would be more suited to Jago & Litefoot-esque or Benny-esque stories, something a bit more jolly than Nick served up.
I am not really sold on the character of Robert Buchan either - competently enough performed by James Joyce but the character is a bit too wet and drippy for my taste.
Also, if I am being brutally honest, the Viryans and the Ever and Ever prolixity don't do much for me. I hope that if there is a series 3 BF drops these elements and lets Charley get on with having some rip-roaring adventures.
To end on a positive note, the casting of the PM was good, I could really picture Theresa May while I was listening.

And my copy arrived. Here is hoping the negative vibes towards this don't show up on my diving into it. And is this the first time BF has released a 4 disc jewel case with a paper sleeve?

I was really impressed with the packaging of this set....it was just that... Have you listened yet? I really hope you enjoyed it.

Haven't heard Series 1 but loved the storyline in this set. Thought it was very inventive.
Episode 1 did a decent enough job of setting up the story. The alien threat was really interesting. The Identical Men were a great twist on the unstoppable monster trope.
Episode 2 had some real suspense - the scenes with Captain Warwick and Donald Predgo were well done and very eerie.
Episode 3 just seemed like a bit of a runaround, really. We didn't get to so much experience the consequences, but hear them second-hand via dialogue.
Episode 4 seemed messy to start with, but a quarter of the way through it came together and it had some really interesting ideas and concepts. It's a shame that less time wasn't spent on dialogue between Charley and Robert - we could have experienced more of what happened to them first-hand.
Weirdly, I felt the weakest thing about it was Charley and Robert. Great performances but they just seemed like very one-note characters. A lot of panic and frustration, but not much else. It got quite repetitive.
On the whole, great ideas. Just a little too dependent on dialogue for exposition for me, which meant I didn't feel much in the way of jeopardy.

I have to say I found this to be disappointingly mediocre. For a four episode story it really felt to me like not much happened (and even the little that did happen was left unresolved). Charley and company show up, there's a bit of a runaround, they get captured, there's a bit of a runaround, we hear 'bad stuff' happening outside to people we don't know and have no connection to or investment in, Charley and company zap to an alien world, and then Charley and the uninteresting and unmemorable bunch of characters they met on earth magically instant message each other about how miserable things are for them all, before it all ends on a cliffhanger. It wasn't awful, but it did feel, to me at least, awfully disappointing. I really enjoyed the first set, but this one was a bit of a grind to even get through. And was it just me, or did India Fisher's Charley performance seem to be a bit off at times? Not trying to be negative, just being honest.
