I think the reason I dislike series 4 so much is partly they lost that beautiful ship Liberator and partly because it became the Avon and Servalan show. Surely, at least in part, Series D is a reaction *against* The Avon and Servalan Show of Series C. Chris Boucher felt the show had veered too far that way in the third season and so ensured the two characters were kept apart throughout the fourth. They only speak face to face once IIRC. So instead we get that weird "Servalan seduces Tarrant" scene. I could have done without that. Teenage trauma, like when your best friends mum puts her hand on your knee.

Oh, I'm not convinced she *seduces* him... No seduction required... Sand is a BRILLIANT episode. One of the best. The only thing letting it down a bit is the budget.

If nothing else, I'd enjoy hearing some more stories from Soolin. A young woman trained as an assassin by the people responsible for killing her family, who later killed her mentor and went freelance. Classic trope. Tonnes to explore there, both in her past and the present. I never found Soolin to be a very interesting character.

Just reading Wolfie53's description makes ypu realise how one dimensional she was. We're talking Big Finish though. They'd turn her into a great character.

All that made her interesting was background stuff, throwaway lines and things like that. Everyone from Avon to Villa had something that explored them as characters, Dayna wouldn't have been half as interesting as she was if not for her introduction story with her father, Mellanby, and her personal vendetta against Servalan. We got to her home on Gauda Prime, but we didn't get to see her intact with anyone there on a personal level. Shame really. It would have been interesting to meet another arm of the gang she took her revenge against.

Nothing about the hints of her backstory appealed to me in the least. For that matter, I'm not much of a fan of Dayna, either.

It's a pretty dark concept, a child raised by the people who killed her parents only to kill them in return. But then, that's what Blake's 7 often did best -- giving colour and rough edges to flesh them out. Is Blake a revolutionary or a fanatic? Both. Is Avon loyal only to himself or to a handful of people who keep getting killed? Both. I never found Soolin to be a very interesting character. I agree. Just reading Wolfie53's description makes ypu realise how one dimensional she was. We're talking Big Finish though. They'd turn her into a great character. Cheers, @brians . You could have phrased that better. But exactly, it's not as if there's nothing to go off. Her one-dimensionality was probably because it was Series D, I'd like to see her be a bit more fleshed out like her peers. Giving Cally a better death than unseen down a shaft would be #2 on my list of things to repolish.

If Big Finish makes stories with those characters, I'll listen, of course. But I'm not hankering to hear episodes with them. Really didn't care for the characters.
Tastes differ.

I really hope they get the rights to Series 4 I am sure Alistair Lock will be able to add to his wonderful Zen and Orac voices with Slave and it would be great to hear Glynis Barber reprising Soolin again I am sure we could have many untold stories of scientists or specialists the team attempt to enlist in their attempts to stay alive and fight the federation.

I wonder if this could be the contract they've recently signed that they mentioned recently.

That would be a dream come true for me, especially with the 40th anniversary coming up next year. There's just so much material to mine and expand upon in series D. I won't be holding my breath waiting for it to happen, though. Much like getting Denis Lill back for Survivors, for whatever reason series D rights just seem destined not to happen, unfortunately.

Jenna had a character to start with, but she wasn't given much space to grow as a character. Or do you mean Gan? He had even less character than Jenna.

Having just watched "Orbit", it occurs to me that there is a rather large gap between that episode and the previous one, "Gold". The anti-Federation alliance pops up right out of nowhere and is virtually wiped out by "Warlord". I think there's quite a lot of wiggle room there to do more Federation-orientated stories with the Series D crewmen.

There is a lot of speculation about the season D rights. How much is actually known?
Are some of the rights held by Boucher? What about the estate of Vere Lorrimer, how much creative input did he have?
Were the 2 both BBC employees at the time, does that mean some of the rights are with the BBC?
We do know BF have used other Boucher-created material (Kaldor City in Robophobia) even before Star Cops and we know they have a good relationship with the BBC so it's difficult to see why those potential rightsholders would be an insuperable problem. We also know the BBC did 2 radio plays set in season D in the 1990s so the rights are, or at least were, not totally unobtainable.
Interested to see what others think and what is actually known.

I've Not seen anything definite but I believe the opinion is Boucher owns the character rights on Soo-lin , Scorpio and Slave but in order to use them terms have to be agreed between him, the BBC and the Terry Nation Estate/ B7 Media, as opposed to Star Cops and DW stuff which was solely his for BBC to use and re-licence to BF.
