After seeing everyone's lists of their preferred Doctor's I wondered which companion you thought had the best relationship/chemistry with each Doctor. Which sidekick would you liked to have seen more of? Who is your favourite from each era? I'm talking TV/Big Finish/Comics, basically anyone you consider canon?
Mine are as follows: , 1 - Steven/Sara Kingdom (I love what Big Finish has done with these two characters) 2 - Victoria 3 - Jo 4 - Leela 5 - Nyssa 6 - Evelyn 7 - Ace 8 - Lucie 9 - Rose 10 - Donna 11 - River 12 - Clara
GO!

There's way too many to rank, but my favourites would be Jo Grant, Sarah-Jane Smith and Leela... followed by everybody else!

I don't think I possess the will or concentration to do the dozens, nay hundreds of companions that the Doctors have had over the years, both officially and unofficially. Besides, I have a feeling that if I made the bottom hundred or so known, they may feel it prudent to assemble into a mob and lynch me.

No its perfectly alright to limit it, just means had to make more discerning in my ranking

10.) Leela - Not an ingenue from modern London, so plus 50 points right there. When she says "I am Leela of the Sevateem", it is neither boast nor apology, but simply a declaration of who she is.
9.) and 8.) Jamie McCrimmon and Zoe Heriot. Despite the fact that Jamie was on the show for almost two full seasons before Zoe (she had her debut in the final episode of season 5), I always think of them a package deal. You can't have one without the other. (Except for, you know, Season 4, or The Two Doctors.)
7.) Jack Harkness: Good old Captain Jack. He's the only NuWho companion on my list. He starts out as a time-traveling omnisexual con man and turns into a mopey immortal with a giant head in Torchwood. (Seriously, have you seen him in Arrow? Dude's got an enormous melon.) I don't like his portrayal in early Torchwood at all. All of the joy was gone from him, but he has several lifetimes of goodwill from how he swaggered to his death in The Parting of the Ways.
6.) Nyssa: The worst thing one can say about Nyssa is that she's Romana Lite, which isn't a bad thing to be at all. Like Zoe (whose name really needs an umlaut somewhere) and Jamie above, she's enriched as a character in large part due to her interactions with her fellow companions.
5.) Sarah Jane Smith: One of my favorite interpretations of the Doctor is that he was strictly an average Time Lord within their society, and only became exceptional after leaving it. Sarah Jane was a wonderful companion, but she became more than that after leaving the show. She was the elder statesman of former companions. When I picture Lis Sladen, I imagine her as she was when she passed, and not as she looked when she originally appeared on the program. For most of the Big Finish stories, the actors reprise their roles as if they were the same age as when they originally played them. But not Sarah Jane. She's mentor to a new generation in the audio plays, and on the Sarah Jane Adventures. Her character grew in a way that the others didn't.
4.) Hex: Before I listened to his stories, I had briefly read about Hex when looking up something else on a Doctor Who wiki. He sounded just awful. No spoilers, but the background sounded like something out of bad fan fiction, and that name. Just the sound of it is like nails on the chalkboard. "Hex". Except it's short for Thomas Hector, which actually kind of works.
He's a kind, caring and emotionally intelligent young man. Hex just wants to help people, and he's a wonderful counterweight to the dark Seventh Doctor and the darkening Ace. Like the rest of us, he's got a bit of a crush on Ace, who treats him like a younger brother. Like Zoe/Jamie and Nyssa/Turlough/Tegan, he's a good character made brilliant through his interplay with the rest of the cast.
3.) Ace: Ace started out as kind of Wizard of Oz joke (A girl named Dorothy Gale whisked away to another world by a freak storm) and became one of the best companions of the series. Like Leela, she was in fewer stories than I would have guessed. (Only nine stories/31 individual episodes). Each one was so memorable that it just seemed like more. Ace had guts and independence, and everything you can say about Rose goes double for Ace. She's so awesome that she even points out to the Doctor that Silver Nemesis was the same story as Remembrance of the Daleks.
2.) Romana: Romana II, obviously. No offense to Mary Tamm, but Lalla Ward is where it's at. I'll just say the things everybody says about her. City of Death is like a honeymoon episode, and it's the one you show your non-Whovian friends when you want them to like Classic Who. She was great with Tom Baker. The Second Doctor treated Jamie and Zoe as peers, but on some level that was just a courtesy to people he liked and respected. They weren't true equals in the way that Romana was.
1.) Evelyn Smythe: She was a superb foil for the Sixth Doctor, giving as good as she got. Older, not as traditionally pretty, feisty, opinionated. Anyone who tries to prevent the conception of an important historical figure by barging in to play the kazoo during the romantic dinner his parents had planned is a companion for the ages.

No Jamie, Zoe or Susan?! How dare you sir! Then there's Sarah Jane, Liv Chenka... I hadn't planned it be a Top 10. What I meant was one companion for each Doctor 1-12. So Steven/Sara are my favourites with William Hartnell, Victoria with Patrick Troughton etc. Ace, Jo, Rose & Clara would definitely not be in my all time Top 10 Companions!

So Steven/Sara are my favourites with William Hartnell, Victoria with Patrick Troughton etc. Okay, in light of that: 1.) Susan: Frequently more interesting in concept than in execution, but there were moments when her alien nature shone through. 2.) Jamie: We need more historical companions! 3.) Jo Grant: Iconic 4.) Romana II: The best! 5.) Nyssa: The Doctor's daughter in every way that matters 6.) Evelyn: Best companion of all time? Maybe! 7.) Ace: The Ur-Companion of whom all New Who Companions are but pale imitations! 8.) Tamsin, I guess War: The Moment 9.) Rose: By default 10.) Martha, by process of elimination 11.) No opinion 12.) I didn't like Clara, but I'm looking forward to the Bill Era!

It's really hard to say... In one way or another, I usually find myself coming to love almost every single companion we've had some far (much as I have with each incarnation of the Doctor). It's much easier to say which companion I think was my favorite for each Doctor.
First Doctor: It's pretty hard to choose between Ian and Steven, since I've really grown attached to both characters through Big Finish, but I'd say Ian wins out overall.
Second Doctor: Jamie, beyond any doubt.
Third Doctor: The Brigadier.
Fourth Doctor: Leela, but Romana II comes at a close second.
Fifth Doctor: Tegan or Peri. It really alternates between the two.
Sixth Doctor: Evelyn overall, but every single companion the Sixth Doctor has had is brilliant (especially Frobisher)
Seventh Doctor: Ace.
Eighth Doctor: Charley.
Ninth Doctor: Jack Harkness.
Tenth Doctor: Donna
Eleventh Doctor: Amy
Twelfth Doctor: Clara at the moment, but may be subject to change following Series 10

1. Susan (because she arrived with her grandfather and because I never thought it was right they were separated. I also wish Sara could have stayed on longer) 2. Jamie (I like them all but Jamie is of course The quintessential Second Doctor companion) 3. tie between Jo and Sarah Jane 4. Romana II 5. Nyssa 6. Evelyn Smythe 7. Ace (although I like Hex and Mel very much) 8. tie between Charley and Lucie 9. Captain Jack 10. Donna (although I'm fond of Mickey and Martha - Ten and Donna just have such great chemistry) 11. Rory & Amy (as a couple) 12. River Song

Doctor #1: Ian (although BF has made it almost impossible to decide between Ian and Steven) #2: Jamie (by a mile) #3: Liz ( and the Brig. I'm not a big Jo fan, I'm sorry to say) #4: Leela #5: Turlough (Yes, I know. I love the concept. I just wish that they had done more with him on TV.) #6: Evelyn (by a mile) #7: Ace and Hex. I adore them both. #8: Lucie Miller. No one else comes close for me. #9: Rose. Although it may have been Jack if we had seem more of him. #10: Donna (Another one that's no contest.) #11: Rory #12: Can't really say yet. I just can't put Clara down here. The jury is still out until after he leaves.
