Haven't seen a thread for this yet, so here we are. Buffy celebrates its 20th anniversary today, Welcome to the Hellmouth having aired 20 years ago this day. Obviously the character herself has been around longer than the TV show, with the movie that isn't too fondly remembered...
But yeah, I just really love this show, and I started watching when I was around... 9-ish? It's had a big influence on my life, and it's been one of the shows I go back to on a regular basis, so I figured that it deserved a thread to celebrate the anniversary. Feel free to share your own thoughts or fond memories of the show!

Fab show, it and Angel. Must watch it again. Hopefully rumours of a reboot are just that, especially if Whedon isn't involved.

Fantastic series. Always used to watch it on BBC2. didn't realise how much was cut until I got the DVD's mind, but that was down to the time it was shown.
Really enjoyed it

When it first came out none of the over the air stations in my area carried it - I think I've only seen two or three episodes.

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

We borrowed a couple of DVDs of the first series off one of my wife's friends about ten years ago. Two episodes in I was dispatched to the local shopping centre to pick up all seven seasons. We love the Buffster in this house.

Tried to get the kids to watch it, but they kept getting distracted by the masks. These are the same kids who say that anything on TV pre 1990 looks like "Colour-Black-and-White"). Mrs Acousticwolf on the other hand was the one who introduced me to Buffy . The youth of today, no imagination . Cheers Tony

Some of the best cons I've been to have been Buffy ones. A really fun fandom back in the day but interest has wained somewhat and people prefer more generic comic-cons these days. Was lucky enough to meet most of the main cast bar SMG in the early 2000s.

Was lucky enough to meet most of the main cast bar SMG in the early 2000s. We still have themed specific cons in the US. I definitely prefer them to comic cons. Sadly never went to a Buffy one but didn't really have the money in the 90's.

I was able to playtest the Buffy RPG back in the day. Lot of fun playing a Giles character.

Just started rewatching the show again, given that it's been a few years since I watched it all the way through, figured that the 20th anniversary was a good a time as any. I'm also debating watching Angel alongside it so I can sync up the crossovers when they eventually happen down the line.

I love Buffy. I had a little crush on Xander back in the day. I've been wanting to re-watch these for a while. I think my boys would love it.

Buffy was great. I actually preferred Angel as a show though. I definitely preferred Buffy and as Mrs Acousticwolf says "Angel is best when he's bad!" - only got as far as season 3 with Angel, but we keep going back to the Scooby Gang. Cheers Tony

OK brace yourselves for my opinion
Buffy and Angel were the 1st of the Tween Young Adult Sci-Fi franchises and they haven't been bettered.
However Angel was vastly superior. They took the weakest character from Buffy Cordelia and made her grow up in the real world into a believable young women and gave her a supernatural edge and the show was played in general with a load more believability then Buffy with the expectation of"The Body" and "Conversations with Dead People".
Then you've got the Angel/Spike effect.
So you create a spin-off for your 2nd supporting male-lead and the main show about your female empowered lead looses viewers by the truckload, so you bring back essentially the same character with a worse attitude and a slightly better British accent to fill the role, and then Angel lasts a year longer then Buffy by ending up with the Angel/Spike double-act!
Ok I'm prepared to be "Dusted"
Regards

I was able to playtest the Buffy RPG back in the day. Lot of fun playing a Giles character. We don't have a lot of tabletop gamers here, which is a shame because that's a topic I really enjoy discussing with my fellow geeks. Buffy, much like the Doctor Who RPG really understands the world it's trying to represent and crafted its rules accordingly. The rule that sticks with me is that a called shot to the heart will have a massive damage multiplier against a vampire target, but only if that massive damage would dust it. Otherwise, it just does normal damage. They said right in the body of the text that this is why the Scoobies always slapped around the vamps before going for the kill. It was in order to bring them into range for the dusting attack. The game was filled with stuff like that and the author really understood the theme and the mood of Buffy. The rules they gave us were great for emulating the series. I'm sorry we never got the Sunnydale or Watcher supplements.

I really love both Buffy and Angel, but I have to say that Buffy inches it as my favourite only slightly. I can definitely see why people prefer Angel, though. They're both really amazing shows.

I personally preferred Buffy over Angel. It just had a better balance of darkness and fun to me.
And Hush to me is still the greatest episode of Buffy (even though I never warmed to Riley).

I think the first time I saw it, I was working in a comic books store. (It was the 90s. Everyone was working in a comic book store back then.)
I turned on the TV at random one night. It was the first season episode, Nightmares. Specifically, it was the scene where the nightmare clown was chasing someone. I made a summary judgment, “Well, this is garbage,” and turned it off and didn’t really think about it for the next several years (except for every day when I went to work and saw all the Buffy stuff we had for sale.)
In my defense, season one lacked the production values of later seasons. And I quite aware of the hypocrisy of complaining about shoddy looking effects on a Doctor Who message board, so there is no need to point that out to me.
Fast forward a couple years. Maybe 2000-2001? We were living outside Philly, along the main line if that means anything to anyone. We were just a few blocks away from this great brick oven pizzeria. One Saturday, my wife was working, so I decided to treat myself to a pizza, so I walked to the place, got my pizza. I walked back with it and turned on the TV again. It was Buffy and this time the episode was Band Candy.
I had a couple friends who would wax rhapsodic about it, so I decided to give it another chance. Buffy hooked me this time around.
It’s not an exaggeration to say that it changed how television shows were made. It always impressed me that even in the most isolated of the stand-alone episodes, there was always something to move the season arc forward. I liked that the dialogue was snappy, that the characters recognized the tropes of television shows and avoided them. I liked that it could surprise me. I was old enough that it wouldn’t change my life, but it certainly improved it.
I maintain that Seasons Two and Three were some of the best television of the era, but the latter seasons grew progressively worse, so much so that I think they tarnish the legacy of the show as a whole.
I never got into Angel as much, with the exception of Season Four. I thought that was just outstanding. Almost the equal of Buffy at its transcendent height. The other seasons were very hit and miss for me, and the straight fantasy elements such as Pylea and the Groosalugg didn’t mesh with what I wanted from the show.
