Huh, would've been nice to have known this was out for my drive from Palm Springs to LA... Am beginning to listen now!

I'm loving these darker episodes, seems like Torchwood is really starting to find it's feet on audio.
Cheers

Well, that was brilliant, absolutely wonderful. I'm so glad I subscribed to this series, because I'm far from a huge fan of Torchwood. This run has been amazing. I love the it has carved out its own style away from BF's other prolific output - the cover design, the music and the overall 'style' are unique to Torchwood amongst all the other members of the audio world. This has been as good as anything this series, even better than some. Ianto is a terrific, complex, far from black-and-white character. It's great also to hear from 'the nightmare lift'. A wonderful twist to the story, the usual excellent performances and sound design, and an extra layer of darkness. Wonderful. Loved it. Can't believe it's the final next month.

Whilst I'm not going to say that it's (quite) as dark as 'Corpse Day', that was definitely a neat "little" Ianto audio!
I second the disbelief that next month's the "finale"!

What stands out for me is the absolute brilliant pace, and the writing is standout. I found this one of those Big Finish audio's that just slip past your ears, and the story just fixates into your mind, painting the most dark and haunting pictures. First rate audio release in this range.

The rats on the cover just look odd to me. Not quite obvious CGI, but there's a disconnect happening for me.

That retcon is a two-edged sword. If he hadn't originally retconned himself after his first encounter with that office, then he would have been prepared for what was going on in this story. Here, he just manages to survive and gets to clear his conscience with another dose of retcon while leaving someone to die. He doesn't learn anything.

Outside of Children of Earth I think Torchwood was very much a mixed bag. Big Finish Torchwood on the other hand has been something of a revelation. It may in fact be BF's most consistently enjoyable range over the past couple of years.

Ianto may have been too much of a jerk for me in this story but it was excellently written and a wonderful piece of drama. Also wonderful performance by Gareth David-Lloyd when he begged the guy at the end he really got me too...
I wasn't originally a fan of Torchwood but the audios made me a fan of the series. Now Torchwood is probably my favorite ongoing range at Big Finish.

I don't know. The behavior seemed rather out of character for Ianto. I wondering if he was just toying with the guy.

a few minutes into it I checked the packaging to confirm I could now (sometimes) recognise James Goss stories by listening to them... Regarding the comments in the extras about the Avengers episodes that partially inspired this (I know a lot of Avengers fans on this board will already know all this but..) it should be said that the Joker (Season 5) was a remake of an earlier episode Don't Look Behind You (Season 3) the lift scene was probably inspired by (spoiler text on next line) {a New Avengers Episode} Complex another similer themed episode was season 4's the House that Jack Built

I couldn't disagree more with those having any issue with Ianto's actions here. How wonderful that this range shows other sides of character killed off nearly a decade ago. Ianto says it in the story - he HAS to be able to be that cold and callous to work at Torchwood. He says it in excuse for his initial actions, before this story even starts, but his rationale applies exactly to what he does at the end. It's wonderfully seeded and entirely set up. Just fantastic.

He's written so many really good stories for Big Finish that I'm frankly surprised not to hear him mentioned more often as a favorite author. I don't know how to actually approve of him being like that, but very much agreed that it probably rounded out the character considerably and probably makes a very good contrast to how he is depicted in Fall to Earth and Broken.

A splendid story. Very dark, of course, but many of the best Torchwood stories often deal with questionably grey areas of morality.

Oh, that's very dark, BF. Could Ianto have lived with Jack's decision in Children of Earth?

Bit behind - I only just got to this one this morning.
Really good! GDL was, as always, terrific as Ianto. He's really nailed that feeling of 'actually competent, but perpetually feels like he's in over his head.' The other actor, the woman in the building, was equally compelling. Her situation, as it seemed for most of the story, could be seen as a little incongruous or unbelievable, but she sold it so well that I never hesitated in my suspension of disbelief. And her exit, oh dear. How very Torchwood (to say nothing of Ianto's decision at the end!)
This was also one of those stories that are set in a dark, cavernous, abandoned place, and I'm an absolute sucker for stories like that. There's a beautifully creepy vibe that I get from stories with this setup, and The Office of Never Was was no exception. I loved the feel of it, the emptiness, the spookiness, the terror of something as simple as rats...and of course, the creepy elevator voice!
(And I loved the behind-the-scenes story that the elevator is based on the real thing at BBC Wales  )

My take on this rather fab story is up at Cultbox (after being lost in the mists of time for a while!) I loved the scarf lift voice - and the history behind it (as mentioned in the extras!)
