There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

I love it: it's probably my favourite ship in any series/ movie/ novel/ comic of all time. Despite having my wife point to a light-fitting in our house when we moved in and saying, "Oh look, the Liberator" I love the design. It's sleek and powerful, the flight deck is fantastic and I love the whole deal with Zen - a magnificent computer who may not be on the crew's side.

Then there's Orac, who needs a lot of coaxing to share information, not to mention expecting to be showered with praise. In a battle of ego between Avon and Orac I honestly don't know who'd win short of Avon taking out the control key.

Blows the doors right off the Scorpio, at least. May I motion that we start audio season five by going back to the factory and stealing another one just like it, and conveniently naming it Liberator 2?

I once wrote a fan-fic explaining why Blake was on Guada Prime - there's a DSV in the local asteroid field, and he's waitingbout the repairs cycle. Blake dies before it's finished, Avon is imprisoned for 20 years and the Federation is still trying to gain access to the DSV's systems. Avon escapes, Orac hacks the DSV and Avon escapes, the last line goes to planetary governor Speer, who says "launch the pursuit Ships".

I really, really enjoy the idea of there being quite a lot more to the Liberator than one might first suspect. It had one of the few known working teleports, auto-repair circuitry that implied a higher technology than even that of the Federation, Zen's own reactions upon their initial discovery of it are suspect and no one really knows how to pilot the ship at first. Its very presence was immediately suspicious. You often got the impression that it had an agenda all of its own and that the main computer ultimately grew fond of the crew of its own volition (in spite of its programming) rather than being unswervingly loyal from the start.

I really liked the Liberator/ Zen in Rebellion Reborn: you really got the impression that there was a genuinely conflicted intelligence behind Zen that had to resort to some very strong mental gymnastics in order to keep on living with itself, especially when you listen to Escape Velocity and discover some of it's backstory.

Thinking back to the original series, I thought the Liberator was a great idea, a gift from fate to Blake and his friends. Built by mysterious aliens obviously far in advance of the Federation and run by a 'computer' who knew and thought far more than it ever let on.
This may sound daft, but I suspect I was not alone in feeling genuinely sad when Zen went down with the ship, saying: 'I have failed you...' 'I' for the first and last time; unforgettable.

No: it's heartbreaking when you realise what Zen had been through with them that it blamed itself for "dying" so pointlessly. It's a great scene.
