I personally think they are great especially the Ainley one. Yeah, I think his Ainley is fairly good, his Delgado does need a bit of work though...

The Delgado wasn't so strong for me, unfortunately. Ainley was much better with cadences and as mentioned, the little sinister chuckle. Fine for a Short Trip, but I don't think it would work (for me) in a full-cast context. Certainly not on the level of his take on the Brigadier.

I kind of think Chris Barrie would be capable of pulling it off. He was a Spitting Image impersonator before Red Dwarf and does spot on voices of the rest of the RD cast in the Audiobooks. Plus Tim McInnerny, whilst having a DW connection from 'Planet of the Ood' has that upper class, slightly condescending but polite, pronunciation. As an impersonation, he has the range to do so. I think of these two, as both have on occasion, put on 'voices' in the past which are not dissimilar from Delgado, when he reproaches someone with a degree of amusement. The key thing for me is, that a 'name' that could feasibly be interested in BF, would be a good selling point for sharing billing with surviving TV Doctors, in the same way John Culshaw is marketable.

I’m just surprised that Chris Barrie has never done anything for Big Finish. As you said, he’s terrific as a voice actor.

And it would be great if R ob Grant would get back into it...

Go to the 36 minute mark of this to hear a good Delgado impression. Pretty decent. Better than the lines in this trailer, I'd say, but Culshaw is a great reader overall - certainly looking forward to his reading of the Three/Brig/Master novel that comes with Masterful!

I used to get the Red Dwarf magazine and I remember the question of why there were only a couple of books as spinoff media and the answer from Doug Naylor himself was something like he never wanted to dilute the show's appeal in the way he felt other cult franchises had. He may well have meant the likes of Doctor Who, with the two books a month in the 90s.
He did allow audiobooks to be made of them though so maybe he's a bit more open to the idea, but I wouldn't count on it. I think at the time too both he and Rob Grant were worried about rights being tied up as they were still shopping a potential film about. Chris Barrie, of course, came to prominence as a voice actor on Spitting Imagine before RD, add that to his fantastic impressions of the other cast members for the audiobooks and he'd be perfect for BF. There's been a surprising lack of crossover from the main Dwarf cast to Who in general, considering just about everyone who's anyone has shown up in the TV series now.

Better than the lines in this trailer, I'd say, but Culshaw is a great reader overall - certainly looking forward to his reading of the Three/Brig/Master novel that comes with Masterful! It's an interesting read to see who has and who hasn't thought much of the preview of Culshaw's Masters. For me, Jon is a really good reader and does more than just impersonate the actor despite him being known almost exclusively as an impersonator. He's able to give them a bit of character rather than just do the voice. He doesn't sound too hot as Delgado but gets the vibe over, and I think captures Ainley well. Both Roger and Anthony had very distinct voices and cadences - and frankly we just don't make actors like that now. The days of the RADA accent are long gone. So it'd be easy for Jon to overdo it and end up in caricature, as his Tom often does, but he pitches his reading well from these clips. When I heard the Five Doctors audiobook I worried at first as a big fan of Dead Ringers I just heard Jon do funny voices but he won me over fast. He's quickly become quite a part of the wider Who audio world with the Targets and now more BF. As a guy everyone always says great things about and a genuine DW fan too, I'm happy for that. He was also wearing his Who badge loud and proud on radio and TV in the Wilderness Years, when others were sneering and making predictable" wobbly sets" jokes on nostalgia clip shows. Jon is absolutely a top addition to the BF family and as he showed during BF Day he's very proud to be just that. I'd say the reason Jon does work for me is why someone like Jacob Dudman doesn't work for me - JD can do impressions...but not the acting. I'm happier hearing someone who doesn't sound like the person but involves me in the story. Worked for years in the Short Trips and most obviously the Companion Chronicles. Some wonderful readers who sounded NOTHING like their Doctors - Katy Manning, Lou Jameson etc - but they are so involving that I buy what they're selling. Clearly for full cast there needs to be some element of sounding like the person more than just inhabiting the feel of the character. I'd say Tim Treolar does that best for me. His story with Jo in the Legacy Of Time set didn't just sound like Pertwee, he caught that more open, wounded Third Doctor we only saw in glimpses like The Green Death. That's when recasts can really shine. There are people who do more accurate sounding impressions but finding a balance between the impression and the convincing acting is the key. Not an easy thing to do either but to both, well, that's not far off needle in a haystack. Not sounding *exactly* like people I can handle if they're close enough. Not acting well is a much graver sin!

Yes. Better than Culshaw who just always sounds like Culshaw. Hmm - no. No idea who it was supposed to be from listening to it. The TLV trailer is rather good as it is quite clear which Master is whom to the point that it is actually nice to hear them again. Distinct vocal from the narration too. Talented chap is that Culshaw.

I think the most likely RD material we would ever get from BF is adaptations of existing things such as unproduced scripts, the novels, the comic strips, etc. I don't get the impression that Doug is particularly keen on the idea of audios (and the chances of Rob ever returning to write for the franchise are nil).
