Hello all, I am about to embark on a long journey, and wanted to know what people think of the fourExcelis plays. Are they any good? Which is the best of the bunch? Is it best to listen in one go/ or leave a little gap between the four adventures.
Any help or thought would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

In order?
1. Yes, I think they're worth exploring. 2. Excelis Decays for me, but then I've always had a soft spot for Craig Hinton and Excelis's final fate is suitably grim. 3. They each have a very distinctive flavour to them, Dawns is flippant and Decays very much isn't. I'd treat them a lot like the Peladon stories, expect change but not as much continuity between releases as you might think.

I liked the Saga I wasn't sold at all on the ending. The 3 featuring the Doctor were all good, ( though maybe a gap between them and the Benny one would make it work better).

Is it best to listen in one go/ or leave a little gap between the four adventures. Any help or thought would be appreciated. Thanks in advance Rather odd, I just posted last night how much I love these and that they get so little attention. Yes, just get them ready to go. It's very much like The Ark where The Doctor sees events in one place from different points in history and with the balance of power shifting enormously. Dawns is very much one of my favourite BF releases. Auntie Iris has a lovely moment consoling The Doctor over Adric, for one. But I won't say too much on the plots as they're not toooo related outside of the recurring antagonist. In many ways this series is the pecursor to the BF trilogies we get now with a story for 5, 6 and 7. What's great is that each has a very different feel and a very different tone but all make equal sense given where Excelis is at that point. They picked the right Doc for each point as well, but I don't want to get too spoiler-y. The Benny one is good but it's more an appendice to the story, and a follow on to the first more than the others.

Cheers for the response Davy. As a fellow Dark Shadows fan I trust your judgement, and I suppose there's no harm sticking them on the iPod.

yeah they are all ok, but its such a long time since I heard them not sure I am the best person to recommend them.
if I remember rightly iris was with 5th doc which I found a bit trouble, and 7th docs ending was a bit grim and not to my taste.
I cannot remember anything at all about the benny one, which makes me think I might not have even listened to it.
but a good set to take on a long journey as they really are 4 separate tales

Me, I listened to it "dry" not knowing anything about it. I later learned this was a way to provide some 5,6,7 content at a time that the main range was dominated by 8, but I didn't know anything about that when I first listened to it. But the fact that is was intended to feature those doctors, no surprise that they were written in such a way to mesh with their individual personalities. I liked the series myself. The 4th episode, which goes full circle to bring Iris back, I'm pretty sure it was a bit later on that I heard it, and I think it might be better off that way.

I suppose it might be a Craig Hinton thing but it bothers me Excelis Decays isn't available for DL.

I enjoyed the one with iris and 5 the most. I actually didn't enjoy the 6 and 7 ones at all, I think benny and iris together was fun, but the standout for me was the very first one, it was quite funny!

This series has a special place, if only because it saw Katy Manning returning to do new Who (and introduced Iris Wildthyme to Big Finish). Consequently, Excelis Dawns is my favourite of the four. As has been mentioned, they each have a different feel. Don't skip The Plague Herds of Excelis, as it rounds off the series by anchoring the two ends by Iris and the artefact.

I think the three Excelis stories featuring the Doctors are very good and they are way underrated as Doctor Who stories. At the time they were over shadowed by the second run of Eighth Doctor Main Range stories, so nobody made much of a fuss about them - and generally still don't - but all three of them are well worth listening to. The Bernice Summerfield story I could take or leave, but it was fun enough.

I recall being somewhat puzzled by how the three Doctor ones were supposed to be connected (or whether the series was, simply, three unconnected visits to the same place at different times), but it's been quite a while since I listened.

Thanks all for the feedback. Its gone on the iPod, and will take priority over some other bits i want to listen to, but will slide down into second place as soon as the new Jago & Litefoot is released. i'm treating it as a box-set that i'm gonne binge listen to.

Excelis definitely worth getting. 5th is the weakest of the 3 IMHO but that is likely because I have never been a fan of Iris. 6th is the best, 7th is a bit on the bleak side but good nevertheless.

I'm still waiting for the 7th to be download available before I get these. I keep hearing amazing things about this set though.

The Fifth Doctor one is great fun.
And The Music of the Excelis Adventures CD is great too.

I'm curious, why is the seventh Doctor one CD-only? It's just bizarre that all the other ones are on download and it isn't.
