Flight 493 is rubbing me up the wrong way. I can tolerate receptive dialogue, but Jerry Lacy's performance is just plain off. I came here for Tony Peterson, not Jeff Clark.

Great set of stories, apart from the one where Jerry Lacy had a cold. Cool how the final story linked back to the first.

It'll be a month or so before i can get round to getting to these.but that '70s-tastic TV trailer they've put together for the BF news item is keeping me thoroughly entertained.

Super groovy and far out! I know what you mean about being so busy! I don’t think it will take me a month, but definitely need to catch up on my DVR’d TV shows, my Netflix queue, and the final 100 pages of a book that I’ve been reading for far too long! Meanwhile, the nice buzz these are getting is definitely building the anticipation!

Quick note, the CDs won't be posted out until next week due to the annual CD stocktake. So if you're a CD listener or a luddite (maybe you're scared of a ghost in the machine), avoid the thread until then.

Another great set of stories from Big Finish. Well done! The only real issue I had, which wasn't really an issue, is that there are so many great hours of listening to hear all the series. I definitely will appreciate it going forward, but right when the audios are new and I want to rapidly listen to it all, it's daunting. As much as I did just admit to my limited self control with a new Dark Shadows audio, I did actually have a relisten to the previous audios on Thursday, and I did appreciate all the little connections between these new ones and the other adventures. Now for very many more enjoyable relistens- I need to get my money's worth out of these.

After numerous delays, I heard the second story (The Mystery of La Danse Macabre) as this week's selection from the set. Very interesting story with many Dark Shadows-y things going on, where I kept making mental notes about things that would have been wonderful had they appeared on the original series of DS. I think I'm already sold on the new secretary - I already liked the idea of cast family being involved but I'm pretty sure I also rather like the character and the chemistry too.

{Spoiler} Buck up Tony!!!!! Yep. I caught that in a second. I've been running kind of cold to Dark Shadows lately. I've missed the previous audiobook format, and I haven't been able to connect to the recent narrated readings. Plus the fact that Bloodline is taking so long to come to fruition. So I have to say how happy I was to have this finally be released, and how much I enjoyed listening to it. I enjoyed it more than some of the original Tony and Cassandra audios. I really loved how the relationship between these two grew and changed throughout the stories. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing.

Listened to the third story (The Mystery of Flight 493), which might just be my favorite story from the set so far. Always a delight to hear a story by Alan Flanagan (and there might even have been some bonus creepy Dark Shadows botany trivia thrown into the cauldron at no extra cost to the listener?)

The performance by Jerry Lacy took me right out of it, and the Groundhog Day plot didn't help. The next story will make your cry.

Any other thoughts on The Tony & Cassandra Mysteries? Here's my sixpenneth worth, even though you didn't ask for it! I thought it was a holler and a hoot, frankly. Funny, spooky, humane, and romantic sometimes all at once. I was struck by how the stories took standard tropes and idea but played them out in ways that are very Dark Shadows. There are, for instance, echoes of one of the Nest Cottage plays in one of the stories, I'm sure accidentally, but the whole thing has a completely different tone and the story is it's own thing.
The third episode had to work really hard to win me over, it's a story type I've grown tired of. It might be my favourite of the set! It uses the format/gimmick to really explore the guest characters. The other episodes add a 'new' elements to the DS mythology, I think. I certainly don't remember other stories touching on the fantastical elements that they use.
Some really nicely pencilled in characters too, there are some that are as rich as any you could name from Dark Shadows, becoming living, breathing characters with shades and nuances in their own rights. And though the stories remain true to the 'seventies spin off' vibe there are elements sympathetically integrated that it's hard to imagine would have been possible back then. Full marks for whoever had the idea of casting Julia Duffy as Rita. She's a bit of a 'get' in her own rights. I wonder how they got her...
And Parker and Lacy? Totally nail it, every scene. They are the Hepburn and Tracy of Big Finish. No further commendation needed, really.

I’m in a hotel in L.A. and I’ve just read the announcement about Maggie & Quentin—brilliant news! And since I’m relaxing after a busy day, I think it’s a perfect time for a Robert Dick podcast!
