I just finished re-listening to Aliens Among Us 1. I'm still wondering exactly when Ng came into the picture. I don't think we're told, and I'm still finding her and her motivations to be a bit of a mystery. I agree. I was so blown away by all the other things that happened in Aliens Among Us, I feel I may have missed something about Ng - a good excuse for another listen We’ll hopfully get the full picture in the next season! I’m kind of hopping that it will tie into whatever happeneds in May’s release We Always Get Out Live?! Fearing Gwen & Rhys... For Queen And Country TommyP

Guess we'll have to wait and see. I will see that re-listening did nothing to clear the waters.

Binge relistening to the entire series (with Visiting Hours slotted in, as suggested) for a proper 13 episode experience. I notice that Ng no longer sounds odd to the ear, now that I A) am used to her, and B) know what's going on. Going to be a fun thirteen and a half hours

So I got through the first four and Visiting Hours today before life got in the way of listening to more. First set is still good, still a strong start, and just reconfirms that Series 5 may well be my favorite. I still miss Eve, but divorced from the initial frustration and feelings of a bait and switch, Ng is great and I could def get used to more of her in the future. Colchester is bloody amazing, Tyler may as well be an official member of the team, and Jack is, as ever, Jack. Orr also makes a good transition between the macguffin for an episode and a regular member of the team. Ro-Jedda makes an excellent "bad guy" for the season, and the Sorvix in general make a great addition. Not a violent conquering horde, but working in IT and outsourcing, slowly taking over the city council, buying up land. A very modern, very Torchwood sort of problem. I love it, I love it all. Busy tomorrow, but I'll try to get a few episodes in to continue this interrupted binge

Was a busy day yesterday, getting back to things today.
Love Rat continues to be a bit disturbing. Someone in another thread mentioned that this almost seemed like an attempt to show that one could do a "sex monster" like in Day One, but, you know, not horribly. To that effect, it works. But, it's, uh, suitably vulgar.
Actually, that brings to mind, where are the weevils?
Rhys' comment of "it's bloody 2007 all over again" rings a little true, as Ng repeats Gwen's past mistakes of mixing work with pleasure. On that note, it's a little surprising how much Ng just is Gwen, most of the time. I don't know if that's a byproduct of writing the part straight and then adjusting it for the inclusion of Ng, or if they planned it this way from the start, but she stays in character as she's dropping character, if that makes any sense. It never really occurred to me the acting logistics of doing that.

Just bought the box-sets recently, and I'm only part way through Box 1 - I'm noticing that the 3rd Box set track listings include behind-the-scenes Interviews, but the first two box sets don't? Have I ordered the correct sets? (When I bought the 10th Doctor Box Set, I accidentally bought the set that did not have interviews; the BF folks very kindly allowed me to upgrade at cost... I really like the interviews )

I did a show the other night and the light person is a Big Finish fan. I mentioned to her that Torchwood series 5 was coming out and three of the cast members looked shocked. When I explained to them it was on audio, they just looked confused. I really wish audio drama were more of a established thing here. I could have so many more conversations with people. I had a slightly different situation - my sister knows that I'm a huge Big Finish fan (hell, all my orders last year were posted to her house for convenience... I visited her a lot last year ) and she knows the amount of material they make. I told her last week that Torchwood: Series 5 was happening, and she was excited. I told her it would be on audio, and she was still excited. She'll never listen to it She was this excited when I told her about Torchwood: Outbreak, or the Tenth Doctor Adventures. She loves the idea, but she struggles to focus on audio drama. About the only time she listens to anything is when we're on car trips with the rest of the family, which isn't very often. She does enjoy what she hears though, so I don't know why she won't try to enjoy them under different circumstances. The point I'm trying to reach here is that people may be interested, indeed thrilled, that Torchwood is continuing... but the format just isn't for them, which is sad. I know these are old responses and I have to tread lightly as I just finished volume 1. Also I read first born during Miracle Day and am reading Exodus Code during series 5. Great way of approaching the books.. I see the framing device as stories told during down time. First Born actually I can imagine Gwen sayin "No Jack! You're listening to the whole bloody story!!" But I know there are people who don't currently listen to audio dramas. There's a lot of them. But there are others.... It reeks of that utterly detestable "books are dumb" crowd. The people who despite that in many ways Audio Drama can be superior to Telly(Honestly it normally is) can't imagine reading a book because there are no pictures. And then they reduce series 5 to an audiobook which is really quite insulting. It's a little creepy how accurately Torchwood this series is. I enjoyed Miracle Day. I now prefer TW in black and white and the Jewish and holocaust allegories certainly translare better in b&w HD. But MD was deliberately a shakeup. It's either a Carnival of Monsters or a Spearhead From Space in regards to format change. I am sad that we didn't get a Starz/BBC series 5 although handwaving a unlikeable but well acted character is easier without it. Mekhi Phifer is one of the great actors of his generation. He ends up in questionable roles and projects and I think that's because he loves to try different stuff. Also despite it's poor reception and lack of sequel MD had some giants of the US sphere in performance. Bill Pullman deserves an Emmy. I'm sorry but that is the ballsiest and best acted portrayal of a character like Oswald I have ever seen. He made me uncomfortable. And he always did because the script wouldn't let you forget. Which as a child abuse survivor gave me a lot of respect for RTD. Someone said the idea of sweet sensitive Rhys killing Oswald was unbelievable. No...it wasn't. Especially seeing those scenes in b&w. I also think one of the greatest moments of cinema is the seamless jump cut between Rex and The Doctor to Naked Jack and his lover having sex. I hope every homophobe who was enjoying the sex scene suddenly found themselves enjoying two naked men and had to face that! And after the initial jump cut there's a wonderful seemless blending of the two independent sex scenes that just felt utterly beautiful. I would go so far as to say someone should watch that episode(number 3 I think) in b&w because it's beautiful. The way it's shot just shows as natural and loving a sex scene as I've seen in awhile. It's not deliberately sensationalised neither is the sensuality downplayed. And Rex, Doctor Juarez, Jack, and his bartender lover are all portrayed and filmed as equals. I'm a gay girl. I like women. But as a film student and as an activist this series of scenes is beautiful. Because it presents all love as equal. My advice is to try watching Miracle Day in b&w. It's worth watching all the way through once. It's also a lot of character development and in all honesty Series 5 box 1 has a lot more punch to it if you're familiar with Miracle Day. I'd also suggest House of the Dead and First Born as mandatory supplements for a relisten. Let's just say all the shock I had from episode 2 revolved around Miracle Day. I had heard that someone else was temporarily playing Gwen. I had even gathered that Eve had had to mention it because people were concerned about her. But all I really knew is that someone else was playing gwen and there was a relevant story reasom for it. And crap! Episode 2 just hit me like a brick. It's been awhile since I've been really shocked by something and even though I t may be mentioned in this thread a million times I canna even say it aloud. And I just don't see it affect ing someone who hasn't seen Miracle Day. Also in regards to b&w revisiting.... Children of Earth is far more terrifying without colour. COE is still one of the best series of 2005 Doctor Who+ as a whole. Maybe not fair to compare it to more episodic series of Who but it's in my Top ten of One series arcs like Series 5, Series 1(I watch the whole thing in one day) and Series 10. COE is some of the best telly to come from theminds behind Doctor Who. But that's a given. I couldn't read for fifteen years. I don't know what's wrong but a Blind Institute reading of Monsters Inside by David Thorpe plus Mad Dogs and Englishmen and several days later the riveting brilliance of Time Travellers helped break that block. And I realised I had been around a lpt of people I would never have come near to if I had been reading. People who say "books are stupid" or "they don't have pictures" and just a million or so appalling statements that I would certainly hear if my ravenous delight in reading hadn't been blocked by some still unforeseen horror. I've seen a lot of that for Torchwood series 5. One bloke ina fb group was just continually nasty and no matter how much people explaimed that it wasn't an audiobook he was so disdainful of it and kept calling it a stupid audiobook It's those attitudes that horrify me. I mean I can finish Torchwood series 5 in the time it takes to listen to Harvest of Time. Not only is Series 5 brilliant and wonderful but I do wish there were more books coming out. I just get so irritated when I see people dismiss Big Finish as audiobooks not only because they are honestly closer to short films than new episodes but it is way too reminiscent of the pervasive "books are dumb and don't have any pictures" attitude that I have seen and been horrified by for quite some time. There are things you can do with audio that you can't do with Telly and that you can't even do with films. And BF has always been very aware of that. I've even begrudgingly accepted them being called podcast dramas(which I hate) because at least it doesn't obfuscate what they are But I often wonder if the people who insist on labelling them audio book s are just bizarrely proud at being anti book. It's inexplicable but I have rarely experienced more aggressive belligerence than when people are anti reading. There are people who are proud of saying "books are dumb" I don't understand being proud of ignorance . Those 15 years were the darkest period of my life. I felt broken. I felt half a person. I can't understand why anybody would have any barrier to reading other than Time.

It's also confirmed that Exodus Code at least, and probably the Titan Comics stuff is canon within the Big Finish Torchwood continuity. It's mentioned that Jack took recovered tech from the Hub for the Ice Maiden, and was kicked off there. Yeah the writers for Torchwood is a pretty small stable. The people doing the audio originals made mention of the BBC full-casts and vice-versa, and were often the same people. Similarly, it was the same people writing the books, so you get, for instance, Red Skies making mention of the events of Long Time Dead, even though they're two different ranges. So I'm not surprised that you still have that interplay going on now, with the BF writers, who are again some of the same folk who've been writing Torchwood since the show began, making sure to keep the continuity tight and in keeping with the other media ranges. I quite like that, actually. This is very excitin goin forward. I mean it IS related to Doctor Who but it having as deep a connective tissue and interrelation as DW normally has is still surprising and delightful. I've always loved the feelin with Doctor Who that you can always enjoy new episodes and new serials but you can re enjoy them in more detailed ways a after experiencing classic serials and books. Doctor Who has referenced non telly adventures since its beginning and so does Torchwood. Many of these end up being written later and it's always exciting to see it. Sigh....Torchwood may start stealing as much of me money as Doctor Who (!) Not entirely surprising as at this point it appears to be the only other range they are able to maintain a monthly range for because I think the youth of the cast and the diversity of the monthly range

Doing my apparently annual relisten. Changes Everything continues to be a great re/introduction to the series, and introduces the new regulars quite well, as well as reacquainting us with the returning ones. Tyler, Colchester, Ng, Jack, everyone's in fine form.

Have finished set one again. Excellent stuff. As I've said before, these Among Us series really do a good job of blending both the episodic nature of early Torchwood with the miniseries narratives of latter Torchwood, and it comes out all the better for it in my opinion.
