Reading through that old thread and realized I should have ordered when it was mistakenly put up for $20. I think that lasted about 10 mins lol.

The difference is the $20 price tag on the downloads in the thread you linked as opposed to $35 that has been listed for The Prisoner download. Although, right now, I'm not seeing a download option on the page for The Prisoner at all. I would consider it for $20. Maybe even for $25. But honestly, there are other BF releases I would rather spend my money on.

If anyone on this forum attends BF Day 8, please ask Nick & Jason directly about the pricing & the deluxe packaging aspect please. Thanks.

Well, after starting this thread, I gave in and bought the limited edition last week. It arrived a couple of hours ago and I've just finished listening to the first episode. I've got to admit, I really loved it. If the other three stories are as good as the first, I'll be highly delighted. The deluxe packaging is also pretty good – very similar to the Doctor Who ones that are available. I think by the end of the week I'll be really looking forward to and hoping for a volume two!
I guess this post therefore is an initial recommendation. My copy is number 478 of 3000 – I don't know if the earliest buyers get the earliest numbers but I only ordered last week. I hope Big Finish have managed to shift more than 500 therefore !

I'm starting to wear down. But I still think the download is way too expensive.

I think it was being in Portmeirion in early November that really made me give in - although I resisted ordering it until the last minute. What a surreal place Portmeirion is - and being there has certainly helped me visualise 'Departure and Arrival'.

Big Finish day is coming up and I am sure many people have ordered this from amazon(cheaper price)+I have not seen a bad review or comment about this yet.Everyone is singing its praises. It was only released 6 days ago!So there is plenty of time for it to gather momentum.

Hey Tin Dog (Michael) - I just wanted to say that your radioactively glowing review of this set pushed me over the edge to buy it. Not listened yet, but it's in the queue...

I've been thinking about this.....blame the rye whiskey....Big Finish is, and always has been, a luxury item. No one needs a Big Finish Production, they want Big Finish. They produce audios for a niche audience and they price their product to reflect that. Producing anything is expensive and risky and I imagine that the profit levels are not great. I have never had a problem with their pricing on a release or box set before. Until The Prisoner. For the first time, at least for me, I felt like they were releasing something that seemed to push the envelope price-wise, for all reasons we have discussed. For the first time I felt like I was being taken advantage of for being a fan of something very specific. And it took me a long time to move past that feeling, or at the very least, push that feeling to the side as the desire of the lifelong fan kicked in. I am happy with the artistic merits of the box set. I think Nick & his team did a great job but I also look at the "deluxe" package and I still don't see the need. I look at the download price and still shake my head. I hope this experiment in pricing and the reaction to it got everyone's attention and it doesn't happen again. Anyway, the second set has been offered and it is much more in line price-wise with what I would expect to pay. To that end, I have already pre-ordered volume two. So thanks for listening to the feedback of your base and don't do it again. Be seeing you.

So the question in, was is worth it? I'm still debating if I should get the download. Price is the only thing that's stopping me, and I worry that it will get even more expensive after the month is out. The reviews have been great so......what do you guys think?

From a creative standpoint, it is absolutely worth it. Well cast and writing wise this is the Nick Briggs we all like to think of. If you can get past the price, and you have a serious interest in The Prisoner, yes.

I can't say that I have serious interest in The Prisoner, but the idea of it has always intrigued me. I've seen clips and scenes, but I've never seen an entire episode. So I guess I'm going to bite the bullet and splurge for myself.

As a set, I can't fault it - actors are great, soundscape is superb. Unless you really want the limited set, download is the best way to go pricewise (outside the UK). Cheers Tony

Yes, the limited set was never an option at that price. I went ahead and got the download. I'll be listening this weekend during the blizzard.

I'd be very interested to hear opinions from people completely new to the franchise. I honestly thought The Prisoner was one of the shows that most fans of cult tv would have seen early on - seminal stuff.

I'd be very interested to hear opinions from people completely new to the franchise. I honestly thought The Prisoner was one of the shows that most fans of cult tv would have seen early on - seminal stuff. I had heard of 'The Prisoner' but have never watched it. No reason really, it just never grabbed me (same is true of 'Dark Shadows', which I wasn't familiar with unitl BF came along - now I can't imagine life without it!). So I came into this completely new. It took a while for me to decide to get it - really, it was the enthusiasm from the promotion that tipped me over the edge. I absolutely, absolutely love it. It is a huge, strange, oppressive story, bleak in the hopelessness of its larger-than-life premise. I'll be honest and admit I've found Nick Briggs' writing unengaging a lot of the time, but here it is terrific. I find certain similarities between this and his acclaimed 'Creatures of Beauty' from way back, such is the realistic unreality of it all (if that makes sense). The cast are uniformly excellent. I have no knowledge of Patrick MaGoohan's performance, but Mark Elstob is intense and sardonic, constantly 'on the edge' but powerfully restrained throughout. His co-stars, particularly No. 2 in all guises and Helen Goldwyn's various characters, are excellent also. The music is very 1960's, evoking memories of that psychedelic, hallucigenic time, but the dialogue is laced with modern-isms, making this very much a 21st century product. So in short - I quite liked it!!
