I posted a message in the UK election thread, were I used a swear word.
I was confident that my usage was within the rules, and fully expected that what I typed would be what was posted.
But it wasn't, it was transformed, and I'm not happy.
If I broke the rules, then I feel I should be dealt with via the system that exists for that, but if I did not break the rules (and I'm confident I didn't) I thoroughly object to being censored.
testing....

Do you know if it was an automatic system (morphing things like the now memetic, BRIAN BLESSED) or moderated by a human?

It doesn't look like anyone edited your post Jason. If one of the mods did you would see a message as you now do on this post.
Edit: Just checked security and the word you were trying to use is censored along with 4 other words. Not sure if someone here added them when we were building the forum or if it was added in automatically by Proboards. It can be changed but I need to discuss with the other mods first.

Actually, this may seem a stupid question after my last one, but out of curiosity, is there a list of corrected words beyond profanity? Sorry if it seems like I'm intruding, but it's a mystery that's been buzzing in the back of my mind since I found the forum.

The automatic moderation on this forum is out of control! Why, I think the mods are nothing but the kindest, bravest, warmest, most wonderful human beings I've ever known in my life!

As this is a family friendly forum there really shouldn't be a need for swear filters as NOBODY should be using that language in their posts.
That said, when the forum was first started a number of vulgar words were entered into the filter so that we wouldn't need to spend our time editing post of those who choose to use inappropriate language.

Well, the rules say and what I wrote, I believe, didn't contravene that rule, I always thought/understood our rules allowed swearing in a limited fashion. That was certainly my understanding when we wrote the rules and recollection of the conversations we had about the rule.

Lots of the milder uk swear words that are on the "broadcast" banned list often slip through the auto censors.
On a game I play.......I can say slag, woman, feck, bugger & bloody, but bendover, blow, kneel & god are all banned!
Madness......
i hope i did not offened anyone using those words...apologies if it did

This.
Doctor Who is a family show and we should be expected to moderate ourselves a bit when discussing it.

Which is what the rules effectively say, however coffeeaddict said never in effect. If people want to change the rules, fair enough, although I'd have said the small amount of swearing we do have is OK because people do do it within the rules.

Could some of the more extreme words be filtered into their family-friendly equivalent as a fun gag? I won't say the Anglo-Saxon variants, but I think people would get a kick out of seeing things like "spack", "ink scratcher", "Rassilon's rod" or "By the powers!" turn up on rare occassions.

I hate swearing filters, I find them childish and annoying. I often (not always, but more often than not) choose my words carefully, I do not ever want some automated filtering program deciding what I can or cannot say or how I should say it.

Whoops. Misread Coffeaddict's post.
I think it's a neccessary evil. A lot of internet discourse is a bit of a cesspit to be honest and it's been sometime since the original forum. Yes, a lot of us wouldn't use that language, but there are new members coming in.

The best swearing filter I ever saw was "whence these flowers" for WTF.

I often (not always, but more often than not) choose my words carefully, I do not ever want some automated filtering program deciding what I can or cannot say or how I should say it. I'm inclined to agree. They strike me as something analogous to DRM. It's trivially easy for someone who wants to subvert them to do it, but more often they serve as inconvenience to a legitimate poster doing his best to conform to the rules as in Jasonward’s case. I don’t think it’s a huge deal and I’m certainly not going to choose this hill to die on. I suspect I'm probably typical in that I read the sticky on joining, saw the prohibition against profanity and I write my posts with that in mind. I’m a guest here, these are the standards and I’ll do my best to follow them. I think it's a credit to the culture of the board that we've gone as long as we did without even knowing we have a filter.
