I was fortunate to grow up with Tom as my doctor. Although I had left Doctor Who behind at the time I was disappointed that he didn't get involved with the Five Doctors. Then when I rediscovered my love for Doctor Who with Big Finish I found it sad that he treated their audios so flippantly and again did not what to be involved. But now he is back and so is my love for his Doctor. Maybe Tom had heard of the concept, but not actually heard any of the stories. He's definitely having the time of his life doing the audios, if the interviews are anything to go by. I think he also regrets making those adverse comments about BF, or at least how they came across. But yet, if he didn't come out with the occasional controversial comment, he wouldn't be the Tom Baker we love.

You know, I think Pat Troughton would likely have joined up too. If not by his own volition, then by a bit of cajoling from Frazer Hines.
One of my greatest regrets down to time is that Jacqueline Hill passed away before the audios too. Could you imagine what stories we might have had with the original Barbara at Big Finish?

Clearly this could never have happened (he'd have been 91 when Big Finish secured the Doctor Who contract), but I think William Hartnell would have been very happy to continue playing The Doctor on audio for BF. No lines to learn, no wigs to wear ... how amazing it would have been to have had so many original Doctors and companions on board. That the company have secured the services of so many actors still with us is something I'll never not be grateful for.

No question, and after all acting at the age of 91 isn't heard of - but, then, if his health had been good enough he would never have left the role so early, and so we wouldn't have had Troughton, Pertwee, Baker, and so on to the point at which the show would probably have finished with Hartnell and Big Finish probably wouldn't have existed. Jon Pertwee, I think, would have been first at BF's door; it's such a shame that he missed out, but on the other hand in many senses he never stopped playing the Doctor, and there are actually quite a lot of instances from the 1990s of him in the role officially or unofficially. But I don't think BF have done too badly: Tom Baker, Trevor Martin, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, John Hurt, David Tennant... hell, if David Banks can come back as the CyberLeader (as has been promised) why not as the understudy Doctor as well?!

Makes me wonder if Pertwee or Troughton would have agreed to do a few BF were they still alive when they started... I think Jon Pertwee would very probably have been there right at the start of BF - he was a radio star for decades long before 'Doctor Who' (and after) and appeared in many audio productions of every sort - even as computer game characters. No doubt he would have loved the quality of 'Big Finish' and we would have loved his performances - I bet he could have made the ruffs, frills and velvet jackets come out on audio in classic UNIT action stories and adventures on far-flung alien worlds, all done with the legendary panache which still makes him 'my' Doctor even now! (And I think myself very lucky that Tim Treloar and Katy Manning have brought his wonderful Third Doctor and Jo back in such style. Volume Three, two months and counting... ) EDIT: I just noticed this was my 500th post and it happened to be one in praise of Jon Pertwee - quite right too!

A nice article. But Nick must be furious that they left out the bit on The Prisoner! Oh my god! ?! No mention of the prisoner...

Nice article - interesting that Stephen Moffat wasn't the only stroppy blighter at that initial meeting, and the absence of Paul McGann not the only issue - but I'm not sure I count digitalspy as mainstream media.... Digital Spy is definitely mainstream. It's perhaps the most popular news site on the internet. Huh?! I can say with absolute assurance it is not. It's not even in the top 50

I wonder if Peter Cushing would have got involved playing Dr. Who? I've a feeling he actually might have been interested It's a shame we'll never know, but it's great fun speculating.

They could always get the stand in from Rogue One... According to the wiki: tardis.wikia.com/wiki/Dr._Who_(Dr._Who_and_the_Daleks)So it seems Cushing would probably at least consider it if he was alive at the time...

It's interesting you say that... Starting in 1985, BF's predecessor Audio Visuals starred Nick Briggs as the Doctor and saw writers like Jim Mortimore ( Blood Circuit, Second Solution, Carny, Mythos) and Andy Lane ( Requiem) pop up who would do both VNAs and BF audios later on. Their last season was produced under Gary Russell's stewardship after he took over from Bill Baggs with Russell also contributing Maenad and Deadfall to the series. It had enough clout at the time to get Peter Miles, Nabil Shaban and have Michael Wisher (yep, that Michael Wisher) pop up again and again as a semi-regular voicing a host of different characters. If they hadn't hit burnout by the time that the New Adventures started (1990/1991), it may very well have happened. Colin was doing The Stranger series in the early nineties which started off as Doctor Who with the serial numbers filed off, so again, he might've been one of the first to jump onboard and with him having such a wonderful repartee with Jon Pertwee, well... It was just an official licence between them and doing the audios back then. Hell, with BBV, it was only a licence between them and doing direct-to-video Doctor Who. Nick Briggs's In Memory Alone might be the closest we got to a bonafide lost Sixth Doctor story with visuals.

But yet, if he didn't come out with the occasional controversial comment, he wouldn't be the Tom Baker we love. I hate how morbid he is though. Please don't talk as though you may be gone soon in interviews, Mr Baker. It's heart-wrenching to read him talking as morbid as he did in his last DWM interview.

Whilst I visit neither, Yahoo does at least have the advantage that if I was really scratching my head for a source I would think of them, Digital Spy never even occurred to me as a news site until this thread. My expectation would be that many also share my thoughts.

While it isn't Google, Yahoo is a globally known internet company with somwthing like a billion users. Digital Spy is little more than a fan news site that has grown up. I think your problem is that you are not mainstream. Ask your mum which of the two she has heard of. She may have heard of Yahoo, even if only for bad things. She's not likely to have heard of Digital Spy.
