BIG FINISH CLASSICS » 16. KING LEARLarge coverTBR November 2017Synopsis‘Oh, let me not be mad…’In an ancient Britain of warring nobles and sibling rivalries, power is a precarious thing. When the ageing King Lear declares that he will divide his kingdom in three to prevent future strife, he unwittingly sets in motion a chain of events that will unravel into treachery, horror, conflict and death. Renowned for its pathos and poetry as much as for its savage violence, Shakespeare’s wildest tragedy remains as thrilling and relevant today as when it was first performed: King Lear is a tale of politics, ambition, greed, vanity, betrayal, love, pride, madness, war and bloody vengeance. Adapted for audio by Nicholas Pegg Consultant: Dr Martin Wiggins, The Shakespeare Institute Producer: David Richardson Executive Producers: Jason Haigh-Ellery and Nicholas Briggs Written By: William Shakespeare Directed By: Barnaby Edwards David Warner (King Lear), Louise Jameson (Goneril), Lisa Bowerman (Regan), Finty Williams (Cordelia), Mike Grady (The Fool), Tony Millan (The Earl of Gloucester, First Messenger), Paul Shelley (The Earl of Kent), Ray Fearon (The Duke of Cornwall), Nicholas Pegg (The Duke of Albany, Gloucester's Servant, Curan), Raymond Coulthard (Edmund, Cornwall’s Servant, the Second Messenger, Second Gentleman), Gwilym Lee (Edgar, the Duke of Burgundy), Trevor Cooper (Oswald, Lear’s Gentleman, Third Messenger), and Barnaby Edwards (The King of France, Old Man, Herald)

What an impressive cast list. It's three discs, although it's not mentioned whether the adaptation covers all three discs or if there's behind the scenes material. I really want to see Big Finish tackle Othello. Richard the III would be a good one to do, since it's a big part of the beloved Main Range release The Kingmaker.

I am definitely getting this but going back and forth between download & CD (mainly because I will be seeing Barnaby Edwards at a con in November and it may be a nice thing to get signed) Hmmm! Plus in the future if I ever am lucky to meet David Warner.
I have never read King Lear but always meant to. For years Ive wanted to watch Akira Kurosawa's Ran which is an adaption of it but wanted to read the play first but never got around to it this never watched Ran. So this is perfect!

30-odd years later and I still feel Shakespeared-out (new word) after studying lots of his works at school. Bizarrely King Lear wasn't one of them and after hearing the trailer I may have to take a punt on this as it sounds brilliant.
Cheers

Plus in the future if I ever am lucky to meet David Warner. If you can nail down a chance to meet some of the other guest cast before November, I'd say go for the CD if it's within your budget. If not, take another Barnaby Edwards contributed CD, and another David Warner CD if you are fortunate enough to meet him. That's just my opinion, take it up or ignore it as you see fit.

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

Ah I was confused for a second the news piece says October but everything else says November Well I decided to save money and get this digitally especially now that I am not even sure if it will arrive in time before the convention.

King Lear is one of my absolute favourites when it comes to Shakespeare. It's so surreal to see "Spoilers on Release" attached to the end...

Who else but Warner for King Lear. I thought for a brief second with Lisa in the cast that this was the next Bernice boxset lmao

I'm a sucker for Shakespeare, and a guaranteed buyer. Can't wait for Hamlet, and now also really excited for King Lear! David Warner is perfect--although, he always is. (Loved his performance in Dark Shadows: Kingdom of the Dead.) I have read all of Shakespeare's tragedies, comedies and sonnets. My favorites are still MacBeth and Romeo & Juliet. So, I hope these two do well so we can have more! Keep up the great releases, Big Finish!

I can't begin to describe how much I'm looking forward to this. Whoever had the idea to start regular (I hope) releases of Shakespeare is a genius.

Who else but Warner for King Lear. I thought for a brief second with Lisa in the cast that this was the next Bernice boxset lmao 'The New Adventures of Bernice Summerfield Volume 05: The Hand(over) of Lear' After Volume 4, in the Unbound Universe, the older (and strangely changed) alt-Third Doctor has relinquished the powers of his Presidency and divided the Universe between his two (mysterious) daughters - and Benny, who refuses to accept. The 'daughters' turn out to be mind-controlling monsters in human form ( literally!) who turn on him and each other, threatening the fabric of Space and Time in their wars. Benny tries to help the Doctor to defeat them and save the Universe from his own mistakes until - sans everything after the final cataclysmic showdown - he turns to the one thing a Time Lord has left at the end... his regeneration into the alt-Fourth... Rather more On Topic: as commented above, what an impressive cast. Possibly the most emotionally draining of all the Tragedies? Certainly a wild and gripping ride and I do hope it will take up the majority of the three hour running time quoted - I expect so because it would need to in order to do the play justice - and I'm sure we can rely on Big Finish there.

Snapped this up as soon as I saw it. A great play and a great cast. I'm particularly looking forward to hearing Mike Grady as The Fool.
My bet is on Macbeth for the next release as BF seems to love the tragedies.
