The cover looks like a movie poster. And I love it. David Warner looks amazing. Agree - and so it should! King Lear: 'Game of Thrones', Elizabethan style. "Exploration of the human condiition" of course, but Shakespeare wasn't writing for scholars or the nobility, he needed to pack the theatre night after night with clerks, traders and all 'the commons of England' (yes that's me and my ancestors!) and many of his tragedies are fairly sensational stuff. I really hope these BF productions can widen out the audience for Shakespeare and help people not worry too much about understanding absolutely everything. I'm sure 90% of his audience didn't follow over 90% of the language any more than I can today without actually studying a play in detail; doesn't mean they aren't great to see and hear even if we have to let some of the flood of poetic genius simply flow over at times. I'm really looking forward to this one, what a cast. All we need now is a wild, stormy November night to listen on...

Louise Jameson and Lisa Bowerman as Goneril and Regan, and David Warner as Lear? Oh, this is going to be fun.

Louise Jameson and Lisa Bowerman as Goneril and Regan, and David Warner as Lear? Oh, this is going to be fun. The only way it could have been better is if McCoy was reprising his performance as the Fool from Ian McKellan's Lear. He was flat-out perfect and it's going to be difficult for me to imagine anyone topping him. I'm interested to see how they play Cordelia because I have a slightly different take on her from a lot of other readers/directors. All her lines and actions actually make more sense if you imagine her as a fiercely loyal, fiercely honorable soldier – which she is actually directly called in the play. A far cry from the wilting flower a lot of productions play her as.

A far cry from the wilting flower a lot of productions play her as. Oh, I remember the Ian McKellan one! I think that was the first version I saw after reading the playscript. I loved William Gaunt as Gloucester and Sylvester's Fool was just perfect. Gifted the wisdom of a king, but lacking the ambition to seize the crown. Content to play the fool to his nuncle, except in matters where he would be outdone by his king. He almost has this -- and I'm not sure if it's a bias because of Doctor Who or not -- paternal quality to him. When he laments to Lear about his loss of titles, it feels like a father saying to his son: "Oh, my dear boy... What have you done? Oh, what have you done...?" Ooh, that's an idea. The depiction of soldiers is always an intriguing one to me because there's this very stock standard idea of what they should be. This Colonial Marine/American G.I. sort of image that crops up fairly commonly nowadays and I think there's a bit more variety than people might initially expect. Gurney from Dune was loud, boorish, but also a spellbinding poet and bard. He was a beautifully lyrical and artistic soul, but he was also a thug for the Atreides. There's a really curious blend of two seemingly contradictory elements there. Cordelia could likewise be demure and still a fierce fighter, it'd make sense of the central crux of the story is her deflection of her father's prompts to flattery. Words are welcome, but not her focus.

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

There's also the idea that Cordelia and Fool could be played by the same actor since they don't have scenes together - scenes with lines, that is. It's a great idea that constantly makes you associate the two characters with each other: the fool speaking the truth wrapped in riddles (oops, wrong play) while Cordelia speaks the truth without quite so many frills.

Weird getting interviews before the actual product is released, must mean we’re getting close to it being out.
