And I'm pleased to say that... if this is anything to go by we are safe.
Plodding stolen plots.
Pointless padding
Over use of familiar faces.
Yes this is doctor who as I like it.

Also one of the most acclaimed, successful, popular new dramas of the millenium so far - and one which garnered huge ratings....I think the Beeb will be more interested in those aspects. I for one enjoyed the show quite a lot asa mystery but also as a character piece. The second year wasn't too strong but that last run was terrific. As someone who follows a lot of character actors' careers, it was great to see as the show was teeming with notables from start to finish.

I loved series 1, thought series 2 was ok but had a lot of problems for me. We had the first episode of series 3 here last night. It was very good, so let's see how it goes.

hands up here...i loved Broadchurch much more than i love TV Dr Who....there i have said it.
series one is great, I was a million miles away from working it out and it was gentle, less hard hitting than most Cop dramas, but a million miles away from the vomit inducing midsummer murders format.
series two is not as good a the first series but still a good watch and works better when viewed as a box set.
series three is back on track, not quite the heady heights of series one but a great watch, and i applaud the decision to call it a day after 3 series....sometimes less is more.
ITV are currently channelling the Broadchurch formula with its current hit The Loch, which feels like broadchurch in Scotland!

I loved series 1 of Broadchurch. I have to admit I never have gotten around to watching series 2.

I watched series 2 of Broadchurch last week, in about two days. I thought it was very good. Having seen it, I'm not sure why people think it's not as good as series 1. Series 1 was good. Series 2 is good in a different way.

Series 2 is good in a different way. Agreed. Seasons 1 & 2 are really about different things. The themes are different and some of the tone shifts a bit. That may have thrown some people off. The reaction reminds me a bit of the reaction to season 2 of True Detective. It becomes a different show for the most part, but I thought it was equally fantastic at what it was doing.

I have never seen series 1, it was series 2 when repeated in the build up to series 3 that got me totally hooked. Great TV.

As someone who spends every damn day of their working life in UK courts or arbitrations, the court room aspects of Series 2 were shoddy. I've been looking right now at day 97 of a trial and you DO need to move things along dramatically, because justice being done is vital but sometimes so very dull, but for TV/Film you also need to do it in a way that is realistic, and the verdict delivered at the end wouldn't have happened because (sensitive to spoilers!) a thing that happened at the beginning wouldn't have happened in the way it did, if at all.

Although I can't say I know how things work in a UK courtroom, or even an American courtroom outside of the jury duty I did once, I completely agree with charlesuirdhein. I had a very hard time watching a lot of series 2 because I thought the trial scenes were completely unbelievable. It seemed ridiculous that certain lines of questioning were allowed, that other witnesses were allowed in the courtroom to watch, etc. But I think series 3 has been really good. (We've only had 4 or 5 episodes here in the US.)

(We've only had 4 or 5 episodes here in the US.) I agree that some of the lines of questioning should not have been allowed and would most likely not have been allowed by a judge in a real case. As far as I know, there's no reason why witnesses would not be allowed in the courtroom unless the judge forbids it or the lawyer for either side requests that witnesses be sequestered. There are also exceptions to witness sequestration, at least in the US, including lead investigating law enforcement officer, expert witnesses, and the accused or defendant. At least one witness in the show was asked not to be in court till after she testified. It seems to me, though, that most lawyers would want eligible witnesses excluded from the courtroom, so that their testimony is not influenced by what they heard from others. That said, most TV shows and movies that I can recall that show courtroom scenes don't seem to follow those rules, so I don't think the courtroom scenes in Broadchurch deviated from that television norm.

That makes sense. Does that mean that you are allowed in after you've given your evidence? In any case, we all know TV is not real life.

I really enjoyed series 2, and the court scenes didn't bother me, I expect it's a hard call for writers, it's difficult for them to accurately portray everything even if its possible inside the narrative and medium restrictions, because just how many aspects of everything do we expect writers to be experts in?
I just have to hope that the area they end up skimming over is not an area I am somewhat of an expert in, that way I don't know any better.
