Have to say, I think this was a pretty strong boxset overall, all the stories were good, and the ending to the last episode... {Spoiler} I'm so glad that I managed to stay unspoiled for it, but I have to admit, I'm not totally surprised by that appearance, mostly because I was expecting some sort of cameo by him. But still loved it nonetheless. I have very little interest in getting this boxset myself, but curious as to what you mean by that spoiler...am I write in assuming you are referring to an appearance by {Spoiler} The 10th Doctor? voiced by Tennant himself in a cameo?

That's cool (if hardly surprising) , and interesting I presume they {Spoiler} got him to record his lines whilst he did the last 10DA set with Piper last year?...or perhaps Georgia herself just got him to record the lines next to the toaster in their kitchen...

One episode in and it strikes me this could have easily been the CBBC follow-up to The Sarah Jane Adventures. And one episode in and I was wrong about my initial concerns. Lot of fun so far.

Would like to get a bit more on Noah. Given his mysterious body of knowledge (he had a natural link to the ghost pod and identified a dematerialisation circuit at a glance) I thought that the Colt was chasing him and that the assumption that Jenny was the target was a misdirect by the writers. It's a misdirect that's been done before, and the false negative (where the scan was fooled) was used in the Ood story
I thought this would go the way of Graceless, but Jenny's inbuilt soldier knowledge and enthusiasm gives a different flavour of perceived nativity from Abbey in Graceless, since the story of Abbey and Zara is more about a loss of innocence in a universe that seems out to get them.
So if Jenny is the Doctor's daughter, that means River is Jenny's mother. If they cross paths... Jenny: The Doctor? He's my dad. River: And who is your mother? Jenny: No one, a progenitor machine if you want to be specific. River: Typical, and thank god. Jenny: And you are...? River: Your mother. Now that's something I never thought I'd be.

Well, River would be Jenny's stepmother, strictly speaking. There's a little bit of a difference (River didn't give birth to her, for example )

Whilst I could see the logic of a Jenny series in the Big Finish world (thought as much in 2008), I had resisted for a long time to buy this boxset as I didn't think that the character could really work in a four story boxset. Eventually I caved in and how wrong I was. I thought that all the stories were really good and the character of Jenny worked really well on audio. Hopefully there will be a second series.
Only downside of my change of heart over this boxset is that I may end up doing the same for Class and I really don't want that to happen.

I am only too glad to hear anything that sounds even remotely like an indication that we will hear more from Jenny soon. I was even happier to hear the brilliant job making us believe she is indeed the Doctor's daughter than the particular story that I'd built up so many expectations about on account of Dorney and the debut of the Ood at Big Finish.

I loved it! Jenny's very much her Father's daughter (and very Ten) but still very much her own person and aware of the divide within her. On a joyous journey to find herself, tapping into the potential of the character with a subtle, but unrestrained touch. We feel the whirlwind and at present, it's glorious. Trying to follow The Doctor's beliefs while still living in the universe, Jenny could well end up being more well-adjusted then her parent in that regard. For me, what I loved was the optimistic tone. There's been a fair bit of darkness - without The Doctor - in many a Who spin off and while there are dark and melchaonic pieces in play that will shape the series, it's very much an adventure at this stage. Light and darkness, the worst and the best, set agasint each other on a more grounded level. How it'll play out in future sets is going to be very intresting.

Stolen Goods: liked it a lot. Garundel was his old awful self and a good intro to Jenny on her own. Prisoner Of The Ood: Liked it even more. Yay Ood at BIg Finish! Written by John Dorney! Who's also in it as a grumpy writer! Can't really ask for much more than that. Neon Reign: God, I hate this story. I mean i really loathe it. It hit you over the head with it's ideas, and that bugged me. Do we really need another story right now about how men are awful and how women are better than them in every way imaginable? Down the to fact that only men get addicted to drugs and contribute absolutely nothing to society? As a woman I found it condescending and trite, and as a story lover I thought it was clunky, unimaginative and amateurish. I disliked this one so much that it almost ruined the entire set for me. (And as an aside, THIS is what I'm scared we will get with Whitaker's Doctor. Anti-men, psuedo-feminist stories that will make me want to cringe.) Zero Space: Loved, loved, loved this story. It reminded me that I didn't really hate the whole set.

I know I'm a guy saying this, but it's Jenny who states that a person can be good or bad and should be judged on their talents, irrespective of gender and that goes for both men and women. The men are also placed in the role of victimhood that women typically occupy in these stories as well. To me, it's VERY much about removing the double standard and expectations for both genders and there being no golden pedestal for women leaving women purely as 'victims' or 'good' as much as 'bitchy' or worse. The Dragon Lord might be human and we understand the dark place where her actions come from, but her actions are horrific and the narrative judges her firmly on it as much as her male counterparts would be in her place in a story.
I don't think this ep condemened men at all or masculinty at all, just the worst aspects of it and how it can affect a culture if left unchecked. I didn't really get that vibe off Neon Rain, at all. I think my problem with Neon Reign was it felt a bit....white savior esque, despite trying not to be. (I am a white person saying this, though)

It reminded me that I didn't really hate the whole set. Well, speaking as a guy - and I don't mean this in an argumentative way like I'm trying to say you're wrong or anything - I didn't really get the impression that this story was trying to say men are awful or that women are better or any of that. I thought the story was meant as commentary on a very specific type of manhood, specifically toxic masculinity. I also got the impression that it was attempting to commentate on internalized misogyny with the main villain. That's just my interpretation, though. But I totally agree that the story did come across as clunky and a bit uninspired in places, and that definitely hindered the themes this story was attempting to address. It reminds me of some of the bad episodes of RTD's era that had some good intentions, but the story around it was not the right engine to tell them. It's probably the weakest story of the set, for sure.

I didn't want to Post it but those were my thoughts on Neon Reign. It laboured the points in the extreme in an otherwise highly enjoyable Boxset.

It reminded me that I didn't really hate the whole set. Agree completely elka, great review - three winners, (I loved the dorney cameo ) and unfortunately one dud in 'Neon Reign'. In that story I still enjoyed the excellent sound design, the hints about Noah's origins and the too-brief Jenny/Noah banter and Pik-Sen Lim's guest appearance. As a Pertwee-era fan I'm always pleased when one of the guest stars from his stories appears for BF. But I thought the world-building was very unconvincing. It seemed inconceivable that every man would willingly have become an addict and that none of those who were addicted would have had the strength of mind and family support needed to break the habit. I got no sense that "the Dragonlord" was forcing 'chup' on the male population, which is the only way the story could have made any sense, or that it would not be equally addictive to women and spread through the wider population.
I was also very unconvinced by the 'Wizard of Oz' reveal. Let's allow that "the Dragonlord" manages to terrify the population into continuing submission by reputation and special effects, backed up by her dragon guards with real armour and guns. But how would she have gained control of a whole planet to begin with and had time to recuit and equip her guards from the local population, since all her 'powers' were just illusion? Early resistance would have easily succeeded and there would have been some later resistance, somewhere. No world will 100% believe in any 'space god' or 'monster' and be intimidated. Some people would have had the courage to fight back - and discovered their enemy wasn't real.
On the ""feminism"" side of the story, I'll just say that 'ATA Girl' is an outstanding recent example of how it should be done imo. I love that set, written by women, primarily about women, for everyone. As a man, I thought the male characters were also written brilliantly - some good chaps, some sexist dinosaurs, some brave and confident, some in need of help. Real people, in other words.

Yep. We seem to be on the same page with everything here. Actually, I seem to agree with you in all your reviews. Yeah, I love ATA Girl. An exceptional release from a company that sets a high bar with their output to begin with.

That was great fun.
Big Finish have given us a female Doctor months before the television series.
Jenny is certainly the Tenth Doctor’s daughter and I hope we get to hear a lot more from Georgia Tennant.
