Sex changing time persons 🤪 Well it is a thing now in Doctor Who. And I cannot think of an occasion with Big Finish that they haven’t done it well. I am looking forward to hearing Missy with River and then in her own boxset next year. However I have no desire to listen to a male voiced Romana or Jenny or Susan or Rani, but Big Finish could change my mind.

I am at the stage now the Doctor MY Doctor (as Jo Grant says in the Unit box set) died after Matt and probably Peter and this Jodie version is something else.I have made my peace with it.

A good point about the Master! Doctor Who is so big we can pick and choose the eras and characters we like and not feel we are missing anything. I agree that since Matt the television version hasn’t been so much to my taste and even with Big Finish I tend to pick and choose, only automatically following the adventures of the 4th and the 8th Doctor. Ignore what you abhor!

Well for me the Doctor died after Tennant but magically resurfaced to become Capaldi and now Jodie.

Succumbed and purchased something for the weekend. It is quite fun. Although I have to say, in direct comparison with Vienna- I liked Vienna better. Jenny is more light-hearted fun, while Vienna is more rough and tough. If you understand what I mean.
Glad i have listened I like the uncomplicated fun and adventurous nature of the stories of the first two Fitton and Dorney as good as usual.just the final one to go

I am looking forward to hearing Missy with River and then in her own boxset next year. However I have no desire to listen to a male voiced Romana or Jenny or Susan or Rani, but Big Finish could change my mind. Old post but when this came up awhile ago I actually thought the Rani would work quite well as a male. I had to confront some uncomfortable truths in regards to my personal and strong resistance to Romana being male. But in Romana's case with all the groundwork in Gallifrey and fighting against a male heavy Gallifrey establishment Romana 3,4 and likely 5 would be I think, a watsonian impossibility. However post Time War anything is possible. But with the Rani it is perfectly in her character to be any gender. Just like the Master I could see her using a male regeneration for infiltration purposes and her personality is more mad scientist than anything. Also although I thoroughly am against a Idris Elba Doctor I think he would be perfect for The Rani. He has really great acting range and I could see a male Rani being a cross between Ainley's Master and perhaps the cold chill of Siobhan Redmond. Although it hasn't been set in stone I think Jenny can regenerate but stays the same. But the other thing to remember too is the punching up phenomena. More female characters are always a boone and BF has really done some amazing things with them. With BF I also think that if anyone does a male Rani it will be telly. BF made the last two Rani cds on Kate O'Mara's request and I feel any future Rani releases will be with Siobhan. Back to Jenny..... What a lovely surprise! I got this in the River bundle because I wanted to try it and I feel that after years of doing Iris Wildthyme they have come up with a female Doctor Who set that is more like the series. Iris will always be my first 'female Doctor Who' but Jenny provides both a sort of Thirteenth Doctor vibe as well as being very aware of how different she actually is from the Doctor. A happy coincidence is she also has a lot of similarities to a Castrovalva, Xmas Invasion, Robot etc Doctor. Due to her being mere weeks old at the start of this she often comes off the same way a freshly regenerated Doctor does. How delightful. I also like that this continues the idea of Scary Ood. RTD told BF he wanted the Ood to be scary again in regards to another release and this definitely fits the bill too. I really lioked this!

Funny, I've never thought of Iris Wildthyme as a "female Doctor Who". She's a female Time Lord to me, not a "Doctor". But not my first, because Romana was introduced first, I believe, and then the Rani. Iris Wildthyme didn't get introduced till the show's hiatus, in the Eight Doctor Adventure novels.

I wonder what the status of future sets in this range is currently. I've been eager for more, with the first set being a delightfully fun time. Hopefully they're well into recording future sets and we'll get a pre order bundle to buy soon.

Iris says in the CCs ('The Elixir of Life' I think) that she's as old as the hills and can't regenerate like the Doctor, so I wonder if she's a trans-temporal adventuress from the wrong side of the Gallifreyan tracks. Someone who was never at the Academy and doesn't have the Rasslion nuclei etc. but pushed through the layers of Gallifreyan society, bagged a TARDIS even more broken than the Doctor's (relative dimensional mapping gone) and ran off to see the Universe and saved quite a few bits of it when they were in trouble.
I know that she has regenerated several times but that's what she says in that story, but then nothing Iris says is ever reliable, believable - or boring! She's magnificently unique, especially on audio thanks to Katy Manning!
(More Iris boxsets please BF.)

Considering how kooky she is at times, shes probably forgotten how many Regenerations shes got left, so says this is her last to be on the safe side

There are multiple origins for Iris (she's not Gallifreyan in all of them, and the character originally appeared in non-DW contexts), and I believe even the order of her regenerations isn't consistent; and she's primarily written about by a very unreliable author. I'm not sure that she sets any precedents.
(My bet, incidentally, is that we won't see a "the Rajah" any time soon).

Agree, Iris makes most of it up as she goes along imo!

You could well be right, it would be embarassing for her to try an-all-over face-lift, Time Lord style, and wind up as Crispy Iris because she got the count wrong... (I can see a boxset in that and how she gets out of it! )

If you've not read Paul's books about Iris outside of DW, you should. She's actually a character who exists meta-textually and can jump from fictional worlds to ours, to different fictional worlds....she's like an interdimensional traveller, I really wouldn't try and pigeonhole how she fits in to the Who mythos as the joke is...she doesn't - she makes zero sense but it's fine as it makes sense to her!

Thanks Davy, I read 'The Further Adventures' as the free DL with Iris 4 and enjoyed it. One day I definitely will read them, though as yet I've got no further than a bookmark to the Obverse.

If you haven't got the Past Doctor Adventure Verdigris, it's numero uno on the ones I'd suggest you pick up for Iris as it's her with Pertwee's Doc and Jo - well before Katy was first cast as Iris. You'll get it for a few quid on ebay or Amazon marketplace.

Perhaps it is just my imagination, but there does seem to be a lack of any announcements regarding new releases. There was Dorian Grey and Benny readings announced this year, but apart from those I cannot think of anything else.

Rather enjoyed my listen to this. It’s nothing earth shattering, but it’s fun and inoffensive on the whole, really sold by Georgia Tennant’s performance that’s such a breath of fresh air. I think she almost plays herself for the most part, certainly the humour to Jenny is very similar to Georgia’s humour in her other roles, on social media, etc. Sean Biggerstaff plays a good part with Noah and makes for a nice duo with Jenny. You’ve got Jenny who is newly created, experiencing and exploring the universe, but is also leading the set so can’t always show her relative inexperience or be constantly asking questions. Noah fills that gap nicely.
Prisoner of the Ood was my favourite of the set and Neon Reign my least favourite; it doesn’t really come together very well and the agenda it’s pushing feels very forced as a result.
As for the ending with the Doctor, I do think he’ll probably have an appearance in the last story of an inevitable second set.
