Ultravox - Vienna (Fortieth Anniversary Deluxe Edition).
Steve Wilson, formerly of the Porcupine Tree, has made a bit of a name for himself as a remixer of vintage music. With Ultravox's Vienna album, he's done just that - subtly, and keeping the spirit of the original songs intact. The result is like listening to this forty year-old work with fresh ears, with little electronic bits and pieces you always knew were there being brought more to the fore. I love it!
I think his best work is on the Jethro Tull catalogue, with King Crimson not far behind. Absolutely masterful but some albums like Gentle Giant's Power And Glory and Rush's Farewell To Kings are just breathtaking too. Not heard a clunker yet. Often pricey but to get the revised original stereo mixes too with SW's mix - and often a lavish book and a plethora of bonus tracks - is well worth it. The 6 disc Tull Stormwatch for example...not cheap but still fantastic value for what's in it.
Busy day for him - he's got the Vienna re-release and Tears For Fear's Seeds Of Love out today. There are actually people who collect his remasters, regardless of band, such is the quality of his work and the curation he does in picking who he will work with (he's apparently said "no thanks" to a few acts where he doesn't have the love for their music). The oddity for me is his 2018 remix of Damnation by Opeth given he produced the original in the first place!
New solo album early next year too. Don't know where he finds time to sleep.
