Finished up season two of Supergirl. There's show that wears its heart on its sleeve. “Nevertheless, She Persisted…”
It’s not a subtle show (*cough* “Make Daxam Great Again”) but it’s become more nuanced since it started.
Thoughts, in no particular order.
The resolution was stolen directly from a bit in the Great Darkness Saga arc of the Legion of Super-Heroes. That's okay, because it's probably my favorite part of my favorite LOSH story.
Grant Morrison said that an encounter with a man dressed as Superman informed his conception of All-Star Superman. "He was perched with one knee drawn up, chin resting on his arms. He looked totally relaxed... and I suddenly realized this was how Superman would sit. He wouldn't puff out his chest or posture heroically, he would be totally chilled. If nothing can hurt you, you can afford to be cool. A man like Superman would never have to tense against the cold; never have to flinch in the face of a blow. He would be completely laid back, un-tense."
It seems like Tyler Hoechlin is channeling that for the role. I love this version of Superman. He's right up there with Christopher Reeve and All-Star Superman for the best portrayal. He sees your better angels with his x-ray eyes and he’ll move mountains to help you reach that potential. He has a kind word for everyone he meets. He's modest. He’s decent. He’s good, in a word. He’s not the superpowered thug or hectoring scold we sometimes get in other media.
On top of that, they use him well. It’s Kara’s show and he never overshadows her. I love him, but I don’t think I’d want more of him. He’s perfect just the way he is.
Teri Hatcher can actually act! I have bad memories of her in those Radio Shack ads where she’s married (?) to that muscular guy with the square head. Her chemistry with Katie McGrath was insane!
And speaking of Katie McGrath, her Lena Luthor is the best part of the show. I want a show where she teams up with Idris Elba as Luthor & Luther. But she’s exceptional. I found her relationships (with Kara, with her mom and with Rhea) the most interesting part of the show.
It was nice to have Cat Grant back for a bit. She gets all the best lines. “Thanks for saving me, James” “It’s Guardian.” “Oh honey, I can see your eyes through the slit in the mask right there.”
Lynda Carter was really good too. Melissa Benoist is just sunny.
There was nothing I didn’t like about it.

{Spoiler}It had so many little touches that I loved, but my favorite bit had to be Alex making a fighting retreat from the DEO, which concluded with a leap out the window. She believes in her sister and Supergirl catches her as she falls.
There was nothing I didn’t like about it.
