There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

I realise that this might be a divisive or non-issue for some folks here, but with the news of an audiobook featuring Doctor Who Annual stories from over 30 years ago, yet another version of Shada being released, as well as the "New New Earth" audios coming up from our beloved BF, does anyone else think that we might be slaughtering our golden goose and flooding the market with Who memorabilia?
I'm reminded of the mid-to-late 90s with Star Trek, the early 90s comic book market and Star Wars every couple of years since the release of the Special Editions in '97 (#Hanshotfirst): everywhere I look there's a heap of "stuff" with the DW logo on it that is (admittedly) of pretty good quality by and large but some of these latest ideas seem to me to be blatant cashing in and spoiling the market for genuinely good ideas.
Are we heading for a "Time bubble" or am I just wanting kids to stay off my lawn?

No. We're not. The core fandom is bigger than ever probably, but... you've got to think: why do they think the Shada release will sell? Why do they think the New New Earth audios will sell? Because the show was most popular during the eras where these stories fit in.

Maybe I mean I stopped buying Doctor Who books after the 1st run of 11th Doc novels because BF were increasing their output so I decided to put my cash and time in them and DVDS of the TV show of course.
The Aunnal I have in their original form but I'm curious about the release.
Shada almost certainly yes for a complete visual version with more of the original cast involved.
Tales of New Earth agreed I cannot see the point of and unless a Companion or a Doctor performer was involved somehow it holds no interest.

On the surface the New Earth set holds nothing for me but a good story is its own reward so I'll wait for reviews. I'm not sure about the market being saturated, I think it's a case of having more releases quantity wise but really trying to make sure there's something for everybody.
One thing I think people might have to get used to is that a lot of the New-Who era lead and support cast are very, very busy and still at the height of their careers so it's not going to be as easy to get them regularly as it may have been some of the classic era actors many of whom were in semi-retirement or not in regular gigs. We've been spoiled with almost all available classic era actors being up for it and available regularly. Since that might not, or plain is not, be the case with the new series, sidesteps into ranges like New Earth,Jenny and CHurchill might have to suffice since I can't see us getting a lot of the leads from the new series very often.

Honestly it's only a problem if you feel like you have to buy everything. And if one does feel that way then I might respectfully suggest it is more a personal issue rather than a problem of the ever-expanding market itself, which will keep filling until it finds a saturation point, and then start retracting again, as such things tend to naturally do.
The powers that BBC will continue to make and license out whatever they think they can sell and turn a profit on. We fans, each in our own small way, help dictate what succeeds and what doesn't by what we choose to support with our hard earned, and what we choose not to. What we prioritize and what we pick up for cheap. What we can't seemingly get enough of, and what we steadfastly ignore.
To me, that's just the way these things have always been, and the only time when you really get those big boom bust events is when something prompts a huge surge of speculators into the market, buying up a huge chunk of product not for love but on the assumption that they're eventually going to be worth big money on the secondary marketplace. And everything eventually falls over when they all come to realise that for 99℅ of things that is never going to be the case, and that the only thing they have invested in is a false economy. So they all vanish practically overnight while things are still being overproduced to accommodate them, and that's when you end up with masses of product that nobody can shift and that triggers a bust, like the comics scene in the 90's, or the Phantom Menace merchandise, or whatever.
With Who I don't think there's much of a risk of that sort of thing for the most part, and we'll pretty much just have individual things that are either successful or not, but nothing that will threaten the brand in any way. Things will hopefully mostly rise or fall based on their individual merit, or lack thereof. There are always Who related releases that I don't understand or see the point of, but that's just me, and I just turn my attentions to something else instead. And there's always something else. Such it is, such shall it ever be.

We don't have to buy it all.... Not that I could if I wanted to. With Big Finish I would guess that Doctor Who has the most 'stories' each year compared to other big media franchises, unless you count comics.
Doctor Who doesn't have nearly as much 'tat' as something like Star Wars, which also has many additional novels, comics, games and even old audios (which are weird).
I wouldn't say that DW and SW are the same size in terms of world wide sales though.
There is certainly more than any one person can consume, but people like different aspects of the show and gravitate to the media they like.... Or none of it.

Thanks for the measured and thoughtful replies, folks: I always worry about a franchise that I love when a) I start referring to it as a franchise, and b) there starts to be a lot of tenuous ephemera suddenly appearing. Your answers have been reassuring.

Your answers have been reassuring. I had the same worries when Big Finish expanded out with its NuWho licence. I reckon we'll be alright, more content isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's actually rather fascinating to explore from a historical perspective, everything from the old Dalek annuals (explaining that the Daleks eat by processing aerosolised vegetable matter) to the TV Action comics (with the First Doctor facing off against the Pied Piper of Hamlin). I only worry when they start restricting content.
