THE BEHEMOTHReleased October 2017SynopsisBath, 1756 – and a very dashing gentleman known only as the Doctor is newly arrived in town, accompanied by his lady friends Mrs Clarke and Mrs Ramon. But there’s something terrible beneath the veneer of Georgian gentility. As awful a horror as the Doctor has ever exposed, hidden inside Balsam’s Brassworks. Something that needs to be brought to light, for the sake of all humanity. Flip's going by her married name, interesting. The post-Quicksilver Constance and her dynamic with Flip should be fun, they'll have the Doctor sorted.

The mysterious Lady Clara? Has Miss Coleman been spotted around any recording studios?

The Sixth Doctor releases are always the releases I look forward to the most and this sounds intriuging. They really are pulling on The Last Adventure, aren't they?

I think it's more to deal with her guilt over essentinally abandoning Jared. It seems she pretty much settled for him and life back home after the events of Scavenger. I love Flip, I really do, but Jared deserves better.

Hey looks like I guessed right about who Clara was when they mentioned her months ago. {Spoiler}https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clara_(rhinoceros)
I know Jenna Coleman has proven she can play a historical figure, but a rhinoceros seems beyond her range to be honest. {Spoiler}On audio, anything goes! It would be one heck of an impressive bit of cameo casting for BF to pull off though! And 'Clara' isn't in the cast list so probably doesn't have many lines...

Many stories have objects or locations which are referred to with people names. It's acknowledged in the commentary by Joss Whedon on Serenity (as in the follow up to Firefly) as a trope he doesn't always like, but felt appropriate in that film. In Serenity the planet the crew go to is called Miranda.

Sure but the "companion" of Lady Clara (who is listed in the cast) is a historical figure as well, and he's mentioned in the wikipedia page under the spoiler tag.

(Hence my joke about her not having many lines! )

It seems a long time since we got the first news of this story back in the spring, a Sixth Doctor historical set {Spoiler}"when there was slavery in England." The description we got to begin with threw me off the scent a bit because I was imagining a much earlier time when {Spoiler}slavery (or 'serfdom' as they called it) was an organised part of English life with a legal framework, back in the Middle Ages.
But by 1756 when this story is set, serfdom and the laws which structured it had been abolished centuries before. So there was no legal basis for slavery in England.
BUT if someone was brought into England as a slave already, the law did not say this was illegal (or indeed legal.)
A decision on this legal distinction (no, there wasn't slavery in England because no law said there was) eventually freed all the people kept enslaved here (over ten thousand) - though sadly not for over two decades after the Doctor's visit. And even then it did nothing for all the people kidnapped and enslaved in British colonies in horrifying conditions, but at least it was a small first action in the long fight for abolition.
Normally I try not to learn too much about releases in advance but as the main cat was out of the bag on this one before we even knew the title, I've followed the news and heard the trailer and the story gets better the more I've learned. Mixing a comedy of manners and polite society with a strange visitor to England - and with society at its very worst; I'm expecting another cracker of an historical from Marc Platt for my favourite audio Doctor and two wonderful Companions.
