A one act play, The People, from roughly 100 yrs ago. It is about a newspaper, but still relevant today. The drama club at the school where I work put it on, including some of my students. Later this year they are performing it at a festival, and will have the chance to work with professional actors on it.

Rossini's Barber of Seville.
This is an opera whose music is very familiar (from Looney Tunes' "Rabbit of Seville" among others), but which I had not previously seen. I appreciate opera where there is as much attention given to the orchestration as to the vocals.

I had [another] double-bill at London again today...
'I & You' - Decently acted, but for something that's "only" 90minutes BOY did it seem to drag at times! (The ending was pretty Gainax too)
'Company' - I absolutely loved & would happily see again!
Next week I'm ushering a school district's Shakespeare... "Thing", with the kids starring in abridged adaptions of "Midsummers Night", 'Twelfth Night' [which'll be the second time I'd have seen this particular play, having seen a live-screening of it on Valentine's Night], 'Hamlet' and 'Romeo & Juliet'. Next WednesdayI'll be heading down to London again to see 'Wicked' with my mother.

On Monday, I saw a School Shakespeare Festival at the theatre I volunteer at, which had abridged performances of 'Twelfth Night', 'Hamlet', "A Midsummers Night's Dream" & 'Romeo and Juliet' [the latter by a group of Chinese or Japanese students... Who had arrived in the country at 7o'clock that morning]. Whilst I did have a little difficulty understanding them at times, the 'Romeo & Juliet' adaption was certainly my favourite. Recently I've started to joke that you could do 'R&J' in 15-20minutes... They did it in just over 19!
Last night I saw 'Wicked' for the second time [don't look at me like that, I was treating my mother!] &, I have to admit, despite a chattering 6-odd year old sat near us, a better watch than when I saw it last year!

Castellan
There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

I was in a production of R&J when I as 20 (I played Mercutio) and I went out with friends after a performance. I was running late and one wit in the group said I'd obviously gotten stuck in "two hours traffic." It annoyed me, but only because I wished I'd thought of it.

Going to watch a live screen of Ian McKellan in Lear in Feb. I'd rather be there in person but, it's not exactly cheap to arrange a trip to London.

Going to watch a live screen of Ian McKellan in Lear in Feb. I'd rather be there in person but, it's not exactly trip to arrange a trip to London. I saw it go out live back in September and whilst it's not my favourite live-screening that I've seen this year, I did enjoy it enough [though I did find their Regan a little... Grating]. My cinema experience that evening, however, wasn't that great to be honest [the Costa attached to the cinema was shut, so the confectionary 'stand' was pretty manic. I went to get a coffee from them and the guy who served me came off as pretty rude... As a retail-worker myself I can understand how other workers can get when they're that busy, but if you can barely hide how much you hate people, then, I'm sorry, but you're in the wrong job]. I did mention it in feedback to the Odeon &, as a result, they gave me free tickets to two future film/live-screenings, which certainly made my day!

Reading Shakespeare's King John. I've tried to locate productions on disc, but to no avail. There are a couple of productions on YouTube by American companies but the staging is minimalist, the sound quality is poor, the videography and some of the acting is amateur. There are productions on a channel available through Amazon Prime, but I don't have Amazon Prime because I lack the kind of connection I'd need to subscribe.
So I'm reading King John, because it's the only one of Shakespeare's history plays with which I am completely unfamiliar.
And by that, I mean I'm thoroughly familiar with: Richard II, having seen productions featuring Derek Jacobi (!!) , David Tennant (!!), and Ben Whishaw (!!)
Henry IV, Parts 1 & 2, and have seen two separate productions of each Henry V, (naturally) Henry IV, Parts 1, 2 & 3, for which I saw the 1980s TV production, but not the more recent TV production (yet) Richard III, in many many guises, including the Olivier and McKellen films, and an adapted version via the Oregon Shakespeare Festival
I've tried to watch Shakespeare's Henry VIII, but just couldn't.
I've been a fan of the history plays since my last year of English Literature. Our teacher usually taught Hamlet, but had decided to retire from teaching and wanted a more interesting year for herself. So, each of her literature classes did a different play, and we did Richard II, which is probably one of Shakespeare's most poetic plays.

On Saturday I had a day off from work, so went to London for a double-bill at the Southwark Playhouse 'Twelfth Night' - Weirdest. Shakespeare adaption. Ever! Yes, I absolutely loved it 'Aspects Of Love' - Dear Andrew Lloyd-Webber, just because your musical has a little melody, doesn't mean you have to force it into every. Single. Scene! Aside from that, I did enjoy it enough, though I would say that the second act could have been a liiiiitle bit shorter... Tonight I saw 'Benidorm' at Woking. 'Out of all the TV shows in all of the world that could have been given a stage play... WHY DID IT HAVE TO BE THIS ONE?! It waaaaaas adequate, I guess? Though I will say that I'm glad that my ticket only cost me £3...

Guess I already mentioned it over in made your day, but King Lear, w/ Ian McKellan. Live broadcast from London to a theatre in Boston. Simply wonderful. The man is an amazing actor. (And the rest of the cast was great as well).

Today I had a day off from work, so went to the opening night of 'The Band', Take That's musical, at Woking with my mother (we'd planned on seeing Nigel Havers & Stephen Tompkinson in 'Art' in Guildford but it had sold-out). I wasn't sure of it going in (as I'm in London tomorrow & Saturday for plays, I didn't want to 'trapse' down there three days in a week, so as this was local...), but ended up really rather enjoying it.

Two different recordings of The Tempest:
First, a 1960s TV production with Roddy McDowell as Ariel and Richard Burton as Caliban. The play was considerably shortened and very campy, but some of the performances were strong (especially McDowell) and the producer made some clever use of CSO.
Second, a Globe Theatre video with Roger Allam as Prospero and Colin Morgan as Ariel, both of whom were particularly skillful. This performance has a completely different dynamic, making full use of both the proximity to the audience and geography of the stage.

Saw Aladdin in the West End with the folks.
Can't say all the concessions/changes worked, reducing some of the stakes, but when the big money-shot moments kick in from the film... it's an absolute rush. When Friend Like Me starts, you can just feel everyone turn back to 6 yrs old again in the place.

"Where's your grandpa right now?" "In the trunk of our car..."
Yesterday afternoon I finally saw a matinee of 'Little Miss Sunshine', my 35th show of the year, in London. I haven't seen the film yet (but I am planning to in the next couple of days), but I think this is the musical adaption I never knew I needed...
