The Pitchfork Disney (Phillip Ridley)
Having read quite a few of his children’s books when I was younger (Kasper in the Glitter and Vinegar Street being particular favourites of mine) and knowing the reputation this play has had I wasn’t quite sure what to make of it when going to read this.
It’s quite grotesque (as it’s reputation suggests) but has an almost fairy tale quality to it. What you might list as urban fantasy I guess.
Certainly one that’s going to stick in my mind for a while.

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

The ABC (Australia) is streaming a few stage plays through their iView app. This afternoon I watched Emerald City by David Williamson. It's a great play, although very heavy on the interior monologues. The producer pointed out in the intro that it's still a depressingly relevant play more than thirty years after it was written and, yes, it is. It's a great production, using only six characters to tell a story about integrity, in art and in life. And bloody funny to boot, with jokes and lines that have aged ridiculously well.

Watched a stream of the musical By Jeeves, parts of it were interesting like the fact that they used the framing device of an amdram production and that they had the great Martin Jarvis as Jeeves but overall it lacked the charm and personality of the brilliant Jeeves and Wooster so much so I had to rewatch the first episode as a palate cleanser!

Anthony & Cleopatra. The National Theatre's recorded production on their YouTube channel. Very good.

Late update : a few weeks ago I had a great evening watching The National Theatre's stream of their 2013(?) play 'This House'.
Brilliant play about the efforts to keep the 1974-79 minority Labour government going, vote after vote, night after night, as the Parliamentary numbers were increasingly against them. Proved that even when you know the ending to a thriller, it doesn't spoil a story when it's told this well!

The Grinning Man at the Bristol Old Vic At Home, I love this show! It’s a beautiful gothic fairytale with loads of dark comedy and bit of beauty and the beast 💀😁 The music was lovely and I adore the puppets they used! The Grinning Man of the title had a gorgeous voice and it also had Davros himself (Julian Bleach) as a mad jester/servant which was fun😊 Very glad I got to watch this!😀
Side Note: I never thought I would see Davros doing an “erotic breakfast dance”!🤣

Earlier this evening I saw the Old Vic's live-screening of 'Mood Music', which I enjoyed fine (I also saw it in person when it was on), and am currently watching an abridged screening of 'Romeo & Juliet' from Calgary. At (approaching) 3am. Like a normal human being. Siiiiigh (they cut out 'ask for me tomorrow' =_=)

After work this evening I've been watching the hour-long abridged version of 'Toy Story'... Whilst it's not my favourite staged version of a Disney/Pixar film I've seen recently (I believe I've seen four now?), I enjoyed it ok enough. 'That said though, it did kind-of feel like I was under the influence of (ahem), certain 'substances'... (There's a song about the claw & Sid has a little song of his own that, whilst not bad, did seem a little... Weird?)

Rossum’s Universal Robots (Karel Capek)
Best known today as the play that first coined and popularised the term ‘robot’ this was a very interesting read. Even if what we consider a robot now is very different to the actual ones featured in the play. Less metal for one thing.
Very minimalistic in terms of the sets but very heavy on the dialogue and exposition. It does have some fascinating ideas which although could be seen as cliché or perhaps quaint now, considering this play is probably the originators of such clichés in the first place I’m willing to give it a pass.
Definitely feel like you could write whole papers analysing this and I’m sure many have.

Just thinking about how much I miss going to the theater. The last play I saw in person was my son in his school production of Chicago. It was amazing. It was the weekend before lockdown in March. They were lucky to get in a weekend of performance, their second weekend was cancelled. As were the productions of so many schools. Who knows if he will get the opportunity to be in anything this year, his last in HS. Here in the NYC area we won't have any professional theater until June at the earliest.
I did watch Hamilton on Disney+ and it was amazing. And my nephew (an actor) was in a made for streaming production of a new musical, and while it was great that he got some work the show was dreadful.

As it and some of the other Disney 'cruisicals' are up on Youtube, so they were mine as well. As they're all about an hour or less, I've found them an enjoyable enough watch to help me start winding down from work Tuesdays...

Whilst it's, of course, for the best, I am missing going to see plays in person (pre-covid, I'd been to at least one show a week). I live an hour from London by train, and I doubt I'll be heading back there for a long, long, while... In the meantime I have been watching live-streams of various plays from The Globe or Andrew Lloyd Webber (& others), or shows that just happen to be on Youtube. Since the start of April, I think I've watched almost 70. Sheesh!

Over lunch I've been watching a version of the Mean Girls musical recorded over Zoom. Whilst I will say it's not a favourite show of those I've seen online since the start of April, I enjoyed ok enough & appreciate all of the time and effort they put into it...

Last week I watched NBC's adaption of 'The Grinch'. It was alright, I guess? I can see why it didn't exactly live up to people's exceptions, but it did at least pass the time...
This evening I was supposed to be seeing one of my local theatre's production of 'Dick Whittington' (for obvious reasons, it's been pushed back a year), so, instead, I watched The Rose Theatre's version on Youtube (along with their take on Aladdin, available until the 31st) &, whilst I'm not going to say that it's my favourite take, it was still a pleasant enough way to spend 105minutes.

Today I watched the 'Shows Must Go On' live-screening of "The Railway Children". Whilst I will say that I prefer the two film adaptions, I did find this a fairly enjoyable to spend (almost) two hours...

Lazarus I wish I enjoyed this more 🤔 I love Bowie, I love The Man Who Fell To Earth, and musicals but this felt too cold. It also didn’t feel right having someone else playing David’s role. I wanted to feel emotional but I just didn’t feel much of anything. How? Why?

Well, we're (almost) at the end of January and I've already watched a dozen shows on Youtube... At the moment I'm watching a student production of Once: The Musical. Even abridged, I adore the ever lasting hell out of it.
