Great concept. The Doctor including Peri in the mindscape suggests he feels guilt about her fate in Mindwarp. In my headcanon this story takes place between Scavenger and The Widow's Assassin. Still trying to fit Peri and the Piscon Paradox in there.

Still trying to fit Peri and the Piscon Paradox in there. Particularly given that the Agent hiring the assassin in question may be one infamous legal prosector the Doctor is all too aware of... Personally, I stuck it towards the beginning of his post- Trial adventures, before Evelyn. Peri and the Piscon Paradox takes place shortly after Her Final Flight. It's at the end of his time alone, after The Wormery and other stories where he's started putting himself back together again. I like to think of the two stories as prelude to his return for Frobisher. He's better, but not quite comfortable enough to take on new companions, so he goes to find an old familiar face. It feels like a very long walk from Her Final Flight to The Widow's Assassin and he's not quite there yet in this story or the next.

The Sixth Doctor getting back with an old companion, but this time with a better ending and no one having the endgame of killing the Doctor from the outset.

Looking back over my own timeline, I put it in chronologically after Charley for no other reason than the release order. That new placement could definitely work. It has a nice rhythm to it, he stumbles across an old companion loses him, feels lonely and seeks out Frobisher. Nice.

Previously I'd put the Jamie trilogy in that gap at the start of Patient Zero, when Charley is in the Zero Room while the Doctor seeks out a cure for the virus she contracted. The main reason was that the Jamie trilogy takes place over a short amount of time, with the four stories taking place consecutively (City of Spires -> Night's Black Agents -> The Wreck of the Titan -> Legend of the Cybermen). The Doctor also admits to Charley that he got distracted from time to time, and who better to distract him than an old companion? The new placement works better thematically.

Still trying to fit Peri and the Piscon Paradox in there. In my continuity Piscon occurs after this and its a shame we've never had a re-match with the Agent.

I like how we don't learn who the Agent is and that he doesn't show up again. Not everything needs to be explained and it's all too believable the Doctor has made an enemy who would be willing to break the laws of time to stop him. Other enemies have done, or tried to do just that. It's like when people bring up Morian from The Game. The Doctor doesn't stop every bad guy, some have to slip through his fingers. After all, he isn't a god. Man, the Nekestani time ships get everywhere! It seems like every time ship that the Doctor encounters that isn't a TARDIS turns out to be one of these.

Yes the Nekestani time ships are a bit like when the Drugers turn up in something a kick of nostalgia.
A re-match also though doesn't have to = Doctor Win just more Doctor awareness.

The Doctor was going to investigate the Agent, but he saw the recuperation of the TARDIS as higher priority, the same reasoning he used when contemplating following up on Peri. Knowing how the Sixth Doctor thinks, he'd have forgotten about the Agent until it became relevant again. Wonder if he went to the Eye of Orion to rest. Now that's a nostalgia kick I wouldn't mind being referenced again.

Well had to follow on from Cryptobiosis with this one lol I always loved that the foe remained mysterious and we never got answers to it and no need to either .It is nice to think some things have been left unfinished and unexplained.
