Even though my daughter spoke Japanese, she managed not to make herself clear to a grocery store employee in Japan when she tried to buy vegetarian food to take with her on the train. She opened the package on the train and found it had bacon in it. Which she removed before she ate it, as she had no other food with her and it was a long train ride. I had this problem initially while picking up stuff at the supermarkets - with everything written in Chinese, I applied the logic that a carton with the picture of a cow would be milk, and it turned out to be yoghurt instead and there went my morning coffee We used to memorize what things looked like after a bit of practice. It worked better than trying to articulate what you want to store employees Another problem was using public transport, we once took a bus to a particular place, without knowing it was a circular route, missed the destination as we neither understood the driver nor could read signboards and came back to where we started from. Yeah, it's hard if you can't read the language. My daughter at least had some knowledge of Japanese when she was in Japan, so that helped.

I don't eat out much, but I had two meals out yesterday.
For breakfast, I had a tofu-vegetable scramble, vegetarian sausage patties, rosemary hash browned potatoes, whole wheat toast, and coffee. It was all delicious, but too much food. I left behind some of the potatoes.
For lunch, I had a huge tossed salad with Italian dressing topped with a nice piece of grilled mahimahi, and some iced tea.

The daily special at a pub I frequent near my job.
Grilled/braised BBQ chicken breast, slice of cheddar, garlic aioli, and sliced avocado, on a brioche bun.
...and now I wish I had another. Dammit.

Reviving an old thread. For Mother's Day, we went out to dinner at this lovely Italian restaurant, kind of pricey (but I wasn't paying ) and the food was delicious. The following Sunday we went out for my daughter's birthday to a different restaurant and I had a wild mushroom risotto that was delicious (and that prompted my daughter to cry out, "Oh, risotto, risotto, risotto! )

We were going stir-crazy on Sunday hanging around waiting to see if Hurricane Dorian was going to hit here (and a lot of things were closed or activities cancelled because a major storm might hit here). So on Sunday we went out with my sister to an Indian restaurant we hadn't tried before. It was delicious.
And Dorian missed us completely, in the end.

We haven't eaten out much, what with Covid, but recently we went to a place with indoor and outdoor seating and sat outside (it was a nice day for it) for a lovely brunch. The place bills itself as farmer owned and serves local sustainable food. Very good.
