I had trouble digesting the news piece at first, but David Richardson sums it up well at the end:
“Necessity really is the mother of invention. In the very early days of lockdown, we knew we would have to adapt some of our plans for the Monthly Adventures range. What we needed were two releases that could be achieved with one Doctor and four guest cast members, recording remotely in a block. When you have a brief like that, it’s not at all restricting - it forces you to do something different, something bold, something fun.
“So what we have in Shadow of the Daleks Parts 1 and 2 are eight half-hour stories, in which the Doctor lands in different times, different places... and keeps meeting the same faces, but as different people. The mystery is heightened by the oblique appearances of Daleks. And not only that - these are Time War-era Daleks!
“And so we had a lot of fun with these stories - weaving them together, pushing in different directions, and getting to play with the audacious concept. And Peter Davison really enjoyed it - we had a fantastic and esteemed guest cast, and by the end of recording it was almost like we were at the studio together, sipping coffee in the green room and chatting like old friends.”
I really like the idea myself. I love the anthology releases, I love the Fifth Doctor travelling solo and I love the Time War. The reuse of the same faces as different people is suitably high concept for the Time War too. The sheer range of writers is really appealing too. Looking forward to these pair of releases. October & November is a very busy time to be a Big Finish fan!

Perils and Nightmares also featuring Five. So that leaves us with 3 unknown titles before the end of the Monthly Range. I wonder if Six and Seven will have at least one adventure each.

News items refers to the physical as "collector's edition box sets". I'm confused. Is there an actual cardboard box to put the 2 releases in if you buy the physical?

This is jsut the kind of flexibility that the Main Range could be used for, if only they kept it... News items refers to the physical as "collector's edition box sets". I'm confused. Is there an actual cardboard box to put the 2 releases in if you buy the physical? All CDs are now described as such, I think?
(Quite tempted by this, but I have other things that I can't afford to buy at present)

I am really happy that so many people are excited about this. I am more hesitant about the idea (never been the biggest fan of 5, not the biggest fan of Daleks or the Time War), But I will give it a chance non the less. I can understand they needed to do something they could handle during lockdown. And the blurb does at least sound interesting.

The Fifth Doctor and Daleks sounds okay to me. I couldn't give a damn where the stories are set, although the quote "Time War-era Daleks" definitely piques my interest that little bit more!

And only five more Main Range releases to find out about. I’m getting a little sad.

I've not paid much attention to the news for the Main Monthly Range, partly because I buy-in ahead of time and I avoid spoilers. Also, because it was rather apparent that something was Going To Happen To It, quite some time ago. I've mentioned this before, but at one point Briggsy had this open-question week on Facebook in Jan 2018, I flat out asked him what was going to happen with the Main Range. I saw something coming even then. Of course, he brushed me off. Which was valid I think, because at that time, there were no plans other than the fact that there were no plans.
I kept waiting for a mini-sub to be offered for those last 4 Main Monthly Range Titles I had not subbed to. I finally got fed up, seven months back when I was making an order of a bunch of other stuff, and just bought them straight out full price. Of course, NOW they offer such a make-up-subs, AFTER they get my money. So I'll lose out on one or two Subscriber Short Trips that way. I suppose they'll sell them to me in a decade or two.

You could email or call and cancel the order for a full refund, then buy them again via the sub option. BF are generally pretty helpful when it comes to things like that

Look at these amazing covers! I guess this demonstrates why Big Finish felt they couldn’t continue with the Monthly Range. Locking themselves down to having to release two discs of adventures with these Doctors. If something unexpected happens their scheduling can go to pieces. Kudos to them for being able to turn a problem into an event! Personally, as not a subscriber to the monthly range, I am disappointed they didn’t offer these two releases as their own bundle. As it is, £30 for the two has put me off ordering. Let’s face it there are plenty of other Dalek stories coming up in the second half of this year and these will be in the inevitable sale somewhere down the line.

If something unexpected happens their scheduling can go to pieces. I take the opposite view! The monthly format allows plenty of flexibility and being pushed in to a corner by unexpected events brings on creativity to meet the schedule... as we can see by these two Fifth Doctor releases.
Kudos to them all at Big Finish for not sitting back and just shrugging at the unexpected happenings in the world and getting on with doing something different. (The MR can handle different!) I am really impressed by how Big Finish have managed to carry on through the 'lock-down' and look forward to hearing these two MR releases.

Funny how things turn out. Events (lockdown and BLM riots) have forced the MR to swith from trilogies to duologies for its lap of honour.

Surely the decision to end the MR was made long before lockdown???

Surely the decision to end the MR was made long before lockdown??? I'd say it was made years before... it was just working out how to do it that took the time!

Surely the decision to end the MR was made long before lockdown??? True but Lockdown and Social Climate means its more a necessity breeds invention end rather than the planned one I assume. Regards mark687
