alternatively, it's the cancerous puss form a diseased mind masquerading as humour. I'm so glad you're not overreacting to the comments....... How is it that anyone in this day and age lets "it's a joke, grow thicker skins" excuse abuse?

I am really disappointed to hear this. It was his novelization of Shada that led me directly to Big Finish, as I decided to seek out new stories with classic Doctors after listening to it.

Anyone who's even followed Gareth a little would know that he's been saying stuff like this on Twitter for a long time.
I'm quite surprised that this is getting so much attention to be honest considering it's fairly mild in comparison to many other tweets he's made.

How is it that anyone in this day and age lets "it's a joke, grow thicker skins" excuse abuse? Cos it isn't. If it was, it'd be deleted by twitter. No, sadly, it wouldn't. Much much worse than that vile little set of tweets by Gareth Roberts remained up.

No, no I didn't Did I say it excused anything? no, no I did not i did say, and I stand by it, that referring to someone's dumb twitter comments as " cancerous puss form a diseased mind masquerading as humour" as a massive over reaction.

Yeah. Albeit an edgy one, which people are going to be offended by. I wasn't and I think people are going a bit OTT with it. But it's pretty obvious to see why. And with the internet as pc as it is these days I'm surprised he didn't anticipate this reaction. I think it was less the comment itself and more the subsequent reactions to it that really jammed his foot in the bear trap. Mockery as deflection doesn't work on the internet, it just makes people angrier. On the subject of political correctness, let's point out that many words have fallen into disuse because of their vulgar connotations. "Tranny" has become just as much a pejorative as "spade" or "Paki". This isn't like debating whether Christmas songs should still be sung at schools (which strikes me as a bit silly), manuals of style have banned the use of this word on the grounds that it is offensive. Like dead baby jokes -- yes, fellows, a joke can be unfunny -- it's in really bad taste. However, I will point out Peter Davison recently who was hounded from Twitter for comments taken out of context by an appalling bit of tabloid guff and accusations at Hartnell being unrepentant in his antisemitism, which doesn't scan with his respect for Sidney Newman and Verity Lambert, nor his mutual and absolute adoration of Carole Ann Ford, all of whom were Jewish. Take everything said online with a pinch of salt, disapprove without resorting to violent anger (use that energy to help those who are hurt rather than attacking the attacker) and remember that ultimately, art and the artist are two separate fields. Hartnells on Twitter?

Hartnells on Twitter? I have absolutely no idea, I'll go check. *rummage* *rummage* *rummage* Yes, he is. Right beside Ernest Hemmingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald who both rose from the dead in 2013. Either that or the afterlife has preternaturally good wi-fi. Just goes to show, you're never too old to learn.

Oh, god, I have a joke but it's so obscure as to be virtually unworkable: the first image I got in my head was instead of cyberspace being populated by powerful AI masquerading as Voodoo gods like in William Gibson's Count Zero, it's the internet populated by passed Doctor Who actors. Like an intelligence from a French electronics research laboratory responsible for developing extreme sports equipment goes around as Jon Pertwee.

But he's part of the LGBT community, right? Unfortunately, that's not a provision for acceptance. I wish it was. People are people.

People are far too whiney and sensitive. It gets old dealing with a new "offense" from someone or some group every single day. Grow up, I say.

Just want to add that there is a population of gay people who don't really accept transsexuals, even though they are all "part of the LGBT community." So the "joke" was in extremely poor taste.

Why? why should anyone stand silent while they’re being abused? Oh, for one very simple reason, so the people doing the abusing can get away with it. Better for them, they can punish the victim for the abuser's wrongdoings. It's a profoundly ugly reason, but that's usually it.
