Only 2 things could've happened 1. The live recording sounded awful. 2. Someone there absolutely refused to be recorded Regards mark687 It is my experience that you don’t record just one show. You record multiple performances and piece together all the best bits. I have to think it is a rights clearance issue. In any case, all that is really required if a standard circumstances beyond our control blah blah blah and here is your money back. It is one of those cases where the least you can do is all that is needed. And yet....

Situations like this and constant delays on productions (Jekyll and Hyde) are why people become unwilling to do pre-orders. I'm not sure who is responsible for public relations at BF, but they've done a lousy job in this instance.

He's produced the show before and there's no way he didnt consult Tony Roper the creator (and Jamsie Cotter from Rab C Nesbitt) before it went on sale. I'm not sure people are aware that Jason produces quite a lot of theatre productions and was behind this version of The Steamie.

They are pesky things that right when you think everything is clear, they pop up. I could of course be dead wrong. As stated a couple of times, I doubt we will know and it is frankly not our business. That said, some kind of basic statement to go along with the refund would have been smart.

I honestly don't see how the release could get as far along as taking orders, having artwork etc if Jason didn't have the rights sorted. Maybe if this was some outside licence but given his involvement with the production - which no-one else did acknowledge in the thread so not sure how common knowledge it is - rights issues sound less plausible than normal. However, it's all semantics really - the end result regardless of the reason is the same. It's a shame for those of us who have grown up with The Steamie and were looking forward to it but hey....worse things happen at sea. It's more a shame to not have a really strong comedy-drama exposed to a new audience.
I encourage anyone disappointed who hasn't seen the show to seek out the original TV film on Youtube. It's terrific.

Big Finish are extremely bad at handling bad news. Theyve shown time and time again that their reaction is to bury their heads in the sand and pretend whatever it is is not happening. But that's just about the worst thing you can do with bad news. Most bad news just needs to be acknowledged, occasionally managed, but saying nothing just frustrates people.

The closing of the forum is a huge example. They chose a Big Finish Day weekend to do it, making no effort to give suggestions for alternate forums. A simple disclaimer saying the following locations are not run by Big Finish, official Big Finish forums and are subject to their own rules and guidelines would be a good start.

I love BF, but I have to agree with you on this one Jason. A shame, as mishandling bad news often makes a bad situation worse and increases the levels of anger/disappointment.

Well, to be fair, I think some spamster picked Big Finish Day to plaster spam on their message board from one end to the other while their attentions were probably directed elsewhere. I used to see maybe a weekly piece of spam plugging passports or diplomas or something, and then right before the forum closed I saw one of them in probably each of most of the sub-forums. They did seem to generally just shut it down without explanation, but maybe at the time they could have been hoping to re-start and didn't want to broadcast that vulnerability any more loudly? I've no idea what really goes on myself. (Also, I'm not sure where all they could have sent us all to at the time, but I'm very glad it wasn't Gallifrey Base from the sound of many comments made here). :-) I think I'm also impressed with them just for getting the refunds out during stock week when a few days ago it didn't even seem sure if the DW releases would be coming out on time, even if there aren't explanations attatched. This sort of sounds like another thing to go sour for them while they were probably pretty busy - and I hope this wasn't that thing that they sounded so excited about finally getting the rights to. (It almost seems strange that I can't seem to think of any more being said about that, maybe I missed something but maybe if they really have hit some sort of legal snag, some of it could be sort of "hush-hush" for legal reasons?) Or maybe they really aren't good at sharing their sorrows - some of you have been doing business with them for seven times as long as I have and may have other incidents in mind. I probably won't lose sleep over The Steamie being cancelled, I was on the fence about it at best - sounded like it might be fun but I think I was looking forward to a couple of positive listener comments before diving in.

Are you saying that you feel Big Finish is excusably too busy to provide a 1-2 sentence explanation/apology to the buyers that cared to pre-order The Steamie in the first place? As for the refunds materializing, I don't think anyone would question Big Finish not to be past and future reputable in that regard.

I can understand the reason, that there was an upcoming season of Doctor Who and they wanted to avoid the heavier than usual moderation that comes with that. However it was basically "we're closing the forum, here's our social media links, end of line." Not even a list of alternate forums, with a disclaimer saying they are not official replacements and that the views expressed by individuals in the employ of Big Finish on these sites do not represent the company as a whole. I came to Not the Big Finish Forum (as it was called before regenerating in Divergent Universe) because I preferred the forum setting over social media.

To be fair when I started up The Zero Room on Facebook it was always intended as a placeholder until we decided what we wanted to do after having the door shut on us. A message board is much conducive to longer discussions.

Quite a few folk in work went to the recent run of The Steamie (it finished a couple of weeks ago). The TV version is coming to a few Scottish cinemas too, the Grosvenor across the road from me is showing it . grosvenorwestend.co.uk/film/?id=HO00000216Shame about the CD falling through to get it to a wider audience but with another big stage run and cinema showings - and the TV showing on Hogmanay, it's bigger than ever here - and it was big already.

I don't know if this release would have necessarily have been a 'priority buy' for me (I was going to wait until a couple of reviews came out before making my decision), but am certainly sad to see this release go...

Did we ever find out why this release was cancelled? Am just curious to why Big Finish would announce something then withdraw it without any explanation. I assume the reason must be something out of their control, rather than poor sales (pre-orders).
