I really enjoyed these. I planned to go episodic with them and treat them as a serial, maybe an episode every few days. Nope. Would up just settling back and listening to them. The spirit of the characters and of the era is really well captured and I rather enjoyred the Dreyfuss Master. He's not a screaming loon... just amoral and self-interested, far closer to Delgado than any of the rest. Really good box set with all of the regulars finding their characters pretty well. Hugely enjoyable.

The Great White Hurricane
If that's the new BF standard for the 1st Doc stories then then 60s are Fab again!
Detailed and at the same time pacey with in depth characterization, the 4 leads are excellent in their interoperations of the roles
Tomorrow now that I've settled into their styles, The Destination Wars and the monumental 1st encounter.

I finished the Destination Wars and episode 1 of the Great White Hurricane. The new Master is great, and David Bradley is perfect as the First Doctor. The new Ian and Barbara were fine, but I didn’t like the new Susan at all. She just didn’t sound even a little bit like Susan. I hope they bring back Carole Ann Ford for later boxsets. Even though her voice is older, she still sounds like Susan. Otherwise, I am loving the new boxset so far.

I found her to be somewhat shrill, which I find annoying. The others were brilliant.

Destination Wars Wonderful mix of traditional and new. The Die is Cast and the Rivalry beings. I hope our theories are right and Dryfuess returns to engage other Doctors, I could imagine him working well opposite the 3rd, 4th, 5th and maybe 7th. He will be back Roll on July with the Samurai and Death Invention Regards mark687

As a side-step, or an off-shoot, or whatever it is, The Destination Wars is nothing but a success in my view. At first I was a little under-whelmed by this whole new era being saddled with an old adversary in its very first story, but I’m very happy to have been proven wrong about that. James Dreyfuss’ Master is a terrific creation, his performance dripping with a kind of arch malevolence. It’s a terrific take on the character and I hope we hear more from him.
As the First Doctor, David Bradley could, I think, have done with a few more funny moments. Hartnell’s Doctor was often pretty hilarious, sometimes despite himself. But then of course, this isn’t Hartnell’s Doctor. And Bradley is extremely good.
Neither is Susan being played by Carol Anne Ford. I can understand why. You can’t really advertise a new cast of travellers by using one of the original cast. I love Carol Anne’s work for Big Finish and hope she does a lot more. Claudia Grant’s version of Susan seems based more on Roberta Tovey, if anyone. My guess is the actors were encouraged to carve out their own interpretations. Here, Susan is far more child-like than she was on television. Jamie Glover and Jemma Powell as Ian and Barbara are fine – forthright, headstrong, dependable.
The story itself is very enjoyable. Reminiscent of 60’s style (helped by the always impressive sound design of Howard Carter), giving all the regulars lots to do (with no sprained ankles) and some wonderfully brutal moments for The Master. And no mention of dusting the TARDIS!

You know...this Dreyfus Master sounds a tad like Jayston's Valeyard in the way he ennunciates each word. Not quite the same, but somewhat similar.

Another set where the trailers almost put me off listening to some wonderful stories. It surprised me just how much I loved these stories. I enjoyed all the recasts. Yes, even Claudia Grant, and I agree that Jemma Powell was so much better here than her performance was in the Early Adventures. Looking forward to Volume 2 in a big way.

I'd love to hear some pre-Ian & Barbara stories with the 1st Doctor and Susan.

So I'm still debating whether to get this now or later. What's the general verdict? Are people loving it?

I haven't actually been able to get through the first story yet for struggling with the recasts, but it's been a fantastic story so far with outstanding efforts from all of the lead performers. Chances are very good I'll have settled into things by the end of the set.
It's kind of interesting how sure I was from listening to the podcasts that Jamie Glover was going to be the recast I'd have the most trouble with, but I think I'm starting to appreciate him having just having a distinctive voice and not trying to sound more like William Russell.
It might also be noteworthy that as much adjustment as I thought it might take to the idea of a new Master (let alone one from the First Doctor era), Dreyfuss completely won me over on both prospects immediately. Well done, Big Finish!

Just started this. Great so far but 1st Doctor isn't sexist enough.

It is very good in fact I heard Great White Hurricane twice in 3 Days its that good, Claudia as Susan took a little time for my ear to adjust to but David Bradley sounds better in these then on TV IMO .

i never even heard of the great white hurricane and nyc is my town. looked it up and learned something new just like the show creators intended . destination war was my favorite of the 2. that beging waiting for the tardis
crew to step a foot wrong was well done. i had no idea who the baddie was before it was revealed. i thought the actress that played susan could be a little high pitched and shrill. i wish susan was written more super genius
alien instead of generic girl.
it was a little weird listening to a first doctor story that didnt have peter purvis or william russel. but i liked it. ill probably order the 2nd set.
