Listened to both stories and a bit of the ‘behind the scenes’ chat yesterday. Really enjoyed the stories and appreciated the mix of sci-fi and historical. Great sound design, very film-esque. Wasn’t particularly keen on either Barbara or Susan, wished the actors had gone with their interpretation of the characters rather than trying to mimic. In the ‘behind the scenes’ chat Claudia Grant said she was trying to copy Carole Ann Ford’s voice - which I’m not particularly keen on either - but think it would have been better to have gone with something more nearer her own natural voice. This would also have helped keep their voices more consistent as a couple of times one of them reminded me of Claire Foy in Netflix’s ‘The Crown’.Also anybody spot Rosalita’s Puerto Rican accent sway into Scottish twice, once quite noticeably, was surprised no one picked it up during recording? Finally listened to this. Very good indeed. Glover and Powell were the most convincing for me, Bradley's northern accent came over a bit too much (nothing wrong with Northern accents, mind, just made his version of One feel a little less authentic to me). I am watching the Crown with my wife and every time I heard Claudia Grant as Susan it just made me think of Claire Foy as the Queen.
Stories themselves were very strong, very much of the period, and Dreyfus made a great Master. Same here; that's what I thought too. Sorry, hadn't read your post, did not mean to plagiarise you

I finished listening to The First Doctor Adventures 1 today. I thought the cast worked well for the stories. Of the two stories, I enjoyed The Destination Wars more. The White Hurricane was good, but I found it a little slow moving in parts.

I was a bit hesitant about getting this release because it felt it was a bit too much of a departure, with the totally rebooted cast, but I have to say that I really enjoyed it. I thought it had a great deal of charm. I did think the performances by the actors playing Susan and Barbara seemed a little stifled by their 1960s RP accents, but I’m sure they will relax into the roles in future. I thought David Bradley was excellent, a lovely performance capturing the spirit of the 1st doctor.

I was really looking forward to hearing what Big Finish would do with the First Master.
In fact it was probably the single biggest reason for my buying the box set.
With this being the First Doctor I wondered if their roles might be reversed somewhat or at least the Master wouldn’t be the evil genius he has become.
So I was disappointed in the end result.
Dreyfus was fine, he certainly didn’t sound anything like I’d imagined. His voice sounded contemporary with that of David Bradley. It was just my own expectations....but I cannot help think that this was a wasted opportunity.

It defeats the entire purpose of having a first incarnation of the Master.

I thought Dreyfus was great as the Master.

I thought Dreyfus was great as the Master. James was absolutely fine. Any issues I have are with the characterisation and plot. It's Master-by-numbers but no other actor would have been able to do anything more with the same script. I couldn't possibly use a superlative like great though - the part didn't allow for greatness. We may get there with him eventually. Just seems odd to me that The Doctor is always so different and the incarnations so massively electric - and we love the show for that - but The Master has this default gentlemanly but villainous veneer throughout all the classic series iterations. BF have a chance to do something new and....just don't. You could give this exact script to Delgado, Ainley or Beevers and not change a word. It's not bad but just somewhat generic. Again - not James' issue. He can only play the part as written. A

Finished listening to this over the weekend. Still on the interviews. I enjoyed it, but it felt more like an alternate universe first Doctor adventure than a "real" one like the Companion Chronicles or Early Adventures do. This was due to the entirely different cast.
As far as The Master, I did think he felt like an introductory version. He did seem more like an ends justify the means character (using The Shadows' justification) than evil for evil's sake (or just out to get The Doctor) as he sometimes appears.
The historical adventure was a nice contrast.

Why was this thread merged? No I couldn't find the one for Vol 2 so I renamed it to cover both.

The inconsistently titled threads make locating specific release threads difficult sometimes.

The Index threads are good but are not up to date, which is a pity.
