I've listened to The Mahogany Murders, and watched Talons Of Wang Chiang so I have a basic overview of Jago and Lightfoot, I don't really have the time/money at the moment to start following a long spinoff range, but I enjoyed JL in the two stories and the pairing with the 6th Doctor seems intriguing so I'm thinking of getting the two voyage stories, A quick glance at the wiki shows they follow on from J+L series 4(?) but are they relatively stand alone? Would I be confused by any of the plot developments or continuity? Or should I save these stories for later when I've listened to more of the range?

No you can understand them fine with no prior knowledge but Venus ends on the lead into the Series 5 setting

I made a mistake with this.. listened to series 5 first without doing the venus story Doesn't 5 start with:
The TARDIS has left J&L are in an empty Red Tavern, they spot a Newspaper on the Table and realize their 90-100 years later then they should be? that's the Venus ending.

Yes. I didn't get the connection at first but could figure it out as it went..and there are a few other references as well. but nothing that prevented me from understanding 5.

Another easy, single-release way to dip into the world of J&L is the 4DA 'The Justice of Jalxar' (Fourth Doctor and Romana I), which references only 'Talons'. And as you enjoyed 'The Mahogany Murderers', another good bet (and great value) would be this year's short trip pair 'The Jago and Litefoot Revival' Parts 1 & 2. Sold as 'Short Trips', but with both wonderful actors involved in each one, it's effectively two episodes of a Companion Chronicle in all but name - and a very enjoyable one with a strong New Series link. EDIT: And how could I forget to mention 'Jago & Litefoot & Strax - The Haunting'. A stand-alone 2 CD release and just as much fun as you might expect. Sontar-ha!

I think Big Finish does a good job with these kind of releases in making them accessible for first time listeners. Yes they are part of a larger body of work, and knowing that body of work helps give them context, but they also are mostly standalone.

I think I have a block somehow with 'Voyage to the New World'. I just can't follow the story and find it confusing, I've tried a few times now but still the problem persists.
