I'm not sure if I want more Firefly. While the characters were great, pulling on the Native American part of the Wild West mythos REALLY left me with a sour taste in my mouth and I only finished the series because a friend of mine loved it and the series could have done well without it. Yes, I know how things ended up, but it was still astonishingly tone deaf. Have you watched Serenity? It puts the Reavers in a very different light (They definitely don’t come across as Native American analogues) and deconstructs the myth of the “necessary evil”/“taming the frontier” very nicely. I did and honestly, it was too little, too late for me. Okay, obviously there was something suspect about The Reavers from the start and Whedon had trust in his audience to get it. But, he still pulled heavily on racist imagery to do it (despite The Reavers being white) and this was sustained throughout the course of a TV series, rather then say a novel (which is also more immediate). Having an interracial couple doesn't really change that for me (I'm white, by the way). Plus, having THAT episode of Buffy in reference doesn't really help. I know people love the show, but....yeah. Not a fan. At all.

I never put the Reavers together with Native Americans. Maybe that was just me being naive, but I never did.
I ADORE Firely. I was a big Buffy fan, but I Firefly is a show I LOVE.

I never put the Reavers together with Native Americans, either. And, when it comes right down to it, they were a whole different thing. I never even heard that any such comparison had been brought up till I googled some stories after reading it here the other day. People have some interesting theories. I don't necessarily buy them.

I don't buy them either. They are a whole different thing. Maybe we know enough about Native Americans to NOT see the comparison, and folks who don't live in this country just see the surface. (Although I don't really see the surface comparison, either.)
