After the positive things that DU members have said about Clive Merrison over the years, I've gone and bought myself his seemingly most popular set. The Collected Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (BBC) CD Its included 12 stories that aired on Radio 4 during 1990-1991 are: - A Scandal in Bohemia
- The Red-Headed League
- A Case of Identity
- The Boscombe Valley Mystery
- The Five Orange Pips
- The Man with the Twisted Lip
- The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle
- The Adventure of the Speckled Band
- The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb
- The Adventure of the Noble Bachelor
- The Adventure of the Beryl Coronet
- The Adventure of the Copper Beeches
Ooh...I wonder, which one is the most entertaining of that bunch. I'm definitely late to the party to partake in this one! When I originally got into listening to other BBC audio mysteries such as from Agatha Christie and Inspector McLevy around the time of 2010, my master plan then was to stick with the Big Finish version of Sherlock Holmes as a means not to double up on the same subject. Oops. Between Merrison on audio and Brett on TV, I think they're the definitive Holmes'. There are obviously other great non Conan Doyle interpretations and productions in many media (and some real stinkers!) but for "the canon" those two nail it. You have some wonderful listening ahead! With all due respect to Nick it's why I've never been able to take to him in the role doing the Doyle material. He's better in the original material. McLevy needs more love, good shout! Whenever I hear Jeremy Brett mentioned (and it isn't too often nowadays), I think of my mother...she *loves* his rendition of Sherlock Holmes. I spent many a fond day watching The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes with her as a young lad. No one is going to ever convince my mother that Robert Downey Jr. is pretty fun to watch as the Victorian sleuth. In her mind's eye, Brett's portrayal as Holmes is the greatest thing since the slice of bread and that's the end of it! As for the soon arrival of my purchased Merrison CD set. My excitement to delve into its stories has been exponentially growing during its overseas transit. I feel like you do when you're waiting for an extra special item to arrive like I did with The Light at the End during the 50th anniversary year of Doctor Who! I'm going to be listening to these Sherlock Holmes stories slowly over the course of spaced out special occasions. Emphasis on savouring its various episodes and not rushing through the set.

Two new releases this week: Michael Powell and Emerich Pressberger's classic One Of Our Aircraft Is Missing on blu for the first time from the BFI. Wow, I was not expecting this to be quite so deluxe, especially at the same price as the regular blurays they put out. You get the regular Scanovo case, reversible art, with 32 page book but then on top of the booklet, the storybook Pressberger wrote is included full size, not shrunk down a la Network, and all in a sturdy (but stil card) box. Lovely stuff. Then, Pig. A few months ago, on a Saturday morning, I posted the trailer for Pig on FB. It was a "Ha, ha, doesn't Nic Cage make weird movies now". What I wasn't expecting is that not only would it be a fab film...but my favourite of 2021 thus far. You'd expect a John Wick like tale of revenge and blood. What you get is an odyssey. About loss, grief, loneliness and accepting you have to live up to you, not someone else's expectations of you. There's a scene in a restaurant in this that may be the best film scene of the last decade. Like a pig, it's easy to walk past and assume this is some dirty beast, but its a beautiful animal when you get to know it.

Warner Archives' new world exclusive blu of maybe the best Western Jimmy Stewart made. He's in this with two of the best tough guy actors ever in Robert Ryan and Ralph "Kiss Me Deadly" Meeker" - yet Jimmy is convincingly more badass than either. One of the true highpoints of the Western, a terrific Janet Leigh years before Touch Of Evil or Psycho and the beginning of Anthony Mann REALLY exploring that dark, psychotic side of Jimmy. For an actor known for the "aww, shucks" of It's A Wonderful Life, he did unhinged remarkably - as we know from Vertigo.

"I wish I was a space man. The fastest guy alive. I'd fly you round the universe, In Fireball XL-5." Network have done it again. You get every ep of this Gerry Anderson classic remastered in HD, a billion and one extras, including a lost Sylvia Anderson interview, the Super 8 versions, a new comic, the colour ep they did a few years back, a new audio episode (with Nick Briggs, no less), a scrapbook, retro colouring book (yay?), a cut out XL-5, a full set (front and back) of the Sweet Cigarette cards and more. Oh, and I now have my pilot's licence and astronaut pin to fly XL-5. Who needs a lift?

Tom's Midnight Garden (BBC Children's Classics) CD. The plot summary for this one seems awfully familiar, but I don't remember ever directly experiencing this Philippa Pearce tale before. It has favourable reviews and ratings.

Cool delivery from Deutschland. The new 4K - including the much anticipated feature length Making Of doc that Arrow refused to wait for in the UK and US because they wanted it out before the new film. Patience pays off - the doc should be more interesting than most of the 1984 version!

A top 10 "Why isn't this on bluray?" itch finally scratched. Credit to Amazon US who had this with me within a few days of release Stateside. A special movie for me as its one my Dad and I watched a lot as a kid. I've mentioned to people here before but I lived in a kinda reverse-kids movie world where he wouldn't sit through Disney and the like, so I knew Cagney, Bogart, Lancaster, Stewart, Stanwyck etc before I knew Mickey, Donald, Pluto, Bugs etc. which explains why a LOT of my film collection is pre-1980.

Awww... that would make a good thread topic - fond memories of experiencing a wonderful movie (or TV series or live theatre) at various times in one's life with a special person. My father is primarily a sports fan, but I do clearly remember us repeatedly viewing The Goodbye Girl and Victor/Victoria together. His enthusiasm about those films was contagious. Richard Dreyfuss, Robert Preston and James Garner were definitely my father's go to for media entertainment. My mother is on team - Maverick and my father is on team - Rockford Files when it comes to Garner on TV. I was a young lad during this time (late seventies / early eighties) that I'm reminiscing about.

Only Fools and Horses: The 80s Specials BluRay
Wow, what a treat this one is! It got some criticism before release for a misunderstanding between a fan and a BBC Studios representative as to what we were actually going to get; upscale across the board vs original restored film. Fortunately, it's been done with the love, care and attention we can expect from the Doctor Who Collection sets. Uncut (apart from GLR jingles, as referenced in the booklet), which has resulted in an entire scene from Jolly Boys Outing being put back in, and restored. The 35mm footage from Jolly Boys Outing is beautiful and To Hull and Back is absolutely gorgeous; a proper Only Fools and Horses film! The title sequence looks as though it was made yesterday, with what looks to be a couple of new pictures of David Jason too.
Looking forward to getting stuck into the rest of the set over the next couple of days. The Frogs Legacy will be an interesting one as that's the only episode which will be a full upscale. Fingers crossed that the set has done well for BBC Studios and they've got the other specials in the pipeline and then a crack at the individual series. They could do with taking some inspiration from the Who team, though, and actually showing the improved picture quality!
I've got No Time to Die on 4K too. I was tempted by the First Edition from HMV, but never took the punt, although grateful for @davygallagher's unboxing video!

I was tempted by the First Edition from HMV, but never took the punt, although grateful for @davygallagher 's unboxing video!I am humbled anyone watches my vids, thank you! It has been my way of finding an outlet recently, somethin new to try. That over 100 people have watched it in 24 hours is terrifc, and my Neil Young vid bein promoted by the NY newsletter and main news page has pushed that to nearly 600. I thouht, and may be proven correct, there is room for people who just talk to the audience. No scripts, no edits to make it pristine...just shootin the proverbial about somethin I, and presumably the person watchin, care for. I had some nice feedback at my snipe at Time Lord Victorious and, well, its because I do not want to make videos that are puff pieces. I have seen so many channels do so..and they start receiving screeners etc....out with the objectivity then! Not for me. I always said its the same old faces and names on BF reviews for a reason, because (some of them), well they praise the lot to essentially save a fortune on BF, write a few paras and..boom. PR done for BF, freebie for reviewer. Nah..my money, my opinions. UNLESS ANYONE WANTS TO SPONSOR ME. On topic - new arrival from Warner Archives. Fritz Lang's first American picture. Spencer Tracy's breakout role, hence the unjustly forgotten by many Sylvia Sidney receiving top billing. A terrific support cast - Bruce Cabot from King Kong and Walter Brennan from a million movies, his classic Stumpy from Rio Bravo being one my dad and I used to love.. Never a youthful looker, Spencer is actually a year younger than I am in this!
